I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

One thing is clear, if this goes on much longer the police also deserve a pay rise.
They can’t strike like doctors and teachers and many had their weekends and even holidays etc cancelled?

the Government accepted the PRRB pay award in full last week or the week before.

I think this will be the quickest fall from grace in modern politics. If you start with such a huge majority the only way is down.

I think you’ll find that Truss and Johnson will be holding that particular title. The sour grapes round here are really on show.

itsgettingweird · 05/08/2024 07:42

Eastern please find me a picture of Starmer standing up with a 3 word slogan behind him - specifically one that say smash the gangs.

Also why your at it look at all the Tory ones with stop the boats amblazoned across it.

I don't deny it's something he's said. And I will admit I think it's a stupid phrase. But he hasn't used it afaik as propaganda and an advertising slogan. He's just said it as part of a longer speech.

He's also said how he plans to do that starting at supporting countries who have mass migration to solve the issues causing it.

He's also said he'll process the people the Tory's didn't process - while waiting to do a reciprocal swap with Rwanda of 200 people - and send back anyone not entitled to asylum.

We have a huge problem with asylum seekers in hotels purely based on the Tory's choice to stop processing them.

Wow some thick bots people on here. Can you imagine how badly little Rishi would have dealt with the riots? Or Liz Truss?

We have had collective failure of Conservative leadership, worsening through the years.

I think Starmer is doing a good job. Boris was the pits at this kind of thing. In contrast Starmer understands our justice system and means business.

IClaudine · 05/08/2024 07:53

To the poster who said Starmer's going on holiday today. He's not. He's chairing COBRA.

Some posters will be really disappointed when the riots stop and the thugs are rounded up.

You decided to repeat them. Perhaps you thought they were clever?

Oh come on. Twas ever thus in politics.
Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher? Ritchie Sunak?

Your faux outrage is ridiculous.

IClaudine · 05/08/2024 07:58

"But officer, I was simply protesting against Starmer's trafficking policy..."

https://twitter.com/mrhenrymorris/status/1820212020035076526

The only trafficking that thug is concerned with is the type that supplies his coke.

BillyNoMates9 · 05/08/2024 07:59

He seems really poor. I cant unify the country, he's fanning the flames of the riots. I needs to take decisive action re the boats but will probably just dance around it by saying he's working with the French etc.

I didn't like Sunak much either, I think he was relieved to walk away from being PM. Neither he nor Starmer are leadership material.

IClaudine · 05/08/2024 08:00

he's fanning the flames of the riots

How?

greengreyblue · 05/08/2024 08:00

He’s not about sound bites. He’s about working hard to make changes . Sensible to have some notes written.

Forestofwoodandsteel · 05/08/2024 08:01

It’s not about where his three words are said it’s what happens with numbers due to it

As for pp on trafficking policy same response it’s about numbers to those not on mn but other media

He led the CPS. I think he understands violent yobs better than most.

I for one am immensely relieved it's Starmer dealing with this, not Johnson, Truss, Sunak, May. I'd rather it wasn't happening at all, of course.

I think it makes it more likely that Farage style politics get pushed out, rather than gaining power. We've given that fascist way too much airtime.

MsJinks · 05/08/2024 08:15

Those saying Starmer is making it worse by not 'recognising concerns', what would you prefer him to say? That he knows folk are mad about small boats and he'll immediately remove any arrival on the same retrospectively? This doesn't really cover the concerns about now British nationals or settled people who previously claimed asylum, who are included in the hate from what I see, so should he include those people being removed? There are attacks and stuff online showing hatred to anyone with non white skin, regardless of whether they are British or not, so should he stand there and say we'll remove all but white people? How would this help instead? You'll say of course not but really even a very bland comment re concerns of immigration in this situation, in the riots, would seriously 'other' people in this country - and legitimise the reasons for the riots - hardly a suitable response.
Regarding these 'concerns' actually His Home Secretary has laid out exactly what they are doing and plan to do re immigration and none of it is open borders, in fact it's aimed at reducing immigration, just not via violence! I also heard him be clear that everyone causing such trouble would face the law and I took that to mean any violence from anyone, including retaliation and not just by the instigators.

Amazed so many posters think politics should be run by mobs burning libraries, Citizens advice bureau, dragging taxi drivers out of cars or looting Lush.

Sod democracy. Sod sovereignty. Sod law and order.

Let the most violent in society decide our direction.

What's your magic solution then? Since you're so clever, what should he have said or done? Remember you've only got 3 weeks to enact whatever you suggest so it had better be effective!

Sugarsugarahhoneyhoney · 05/08/2024 08:31

Really?? He's had around 4 weeks, he has a hell of a job to clean up the 14 years shit show that's taken place! Did you think he had a magic wand and can fix things in an instant?

cardibach · 05/08/2024 08:33

EasternStandard · 04/08/2024 23:05

That’s why I didn’t vote for a poor trafficking policy that had a likely chance of increasing numbers

Riots and public disorder are incredibly wrecking no matter where

Here or other EU countries

Whether the policy is poor or not remains to be seen, doesn’t it? The ‘tracking upwards’ of numbers you speak of happened under the last policy. You don’t really think 4 weeks is enough to actually start addressing the problem?

upinaballoon · 05/08/2024 08:34

Rummly · 05/08/2024 00:43

That’s the crux of it. Any government that says it can curb unplanned immigration is lying, really. The Tories did this. But Labour felt the need to do so too.

I fail to see what Labour could possibly do about the gangs they claim they’ll “smash”. It’s not as though the police, customs and the security services haven’t been trying for years.

And how any government can make the UK less attractive to migrants from very poor countries is beyond me.

As for the new ‘Commander’ of the border that’s got to be the least enviable job in the civil service.

So the numbers will continue to go up. We either come to terms with that inevitability or we don’t.

Looking at Labour’s announcements about this subject, and others that have come up in just a month, I get the sense that we’re in for a great deal of Blairite word-play and grand titles, but in a rather more wooden and less convincing style than Blair brought with him.

I think yours is a sensible post.
There are some problems which are problems, and they're (they are) going to be problems for ALL governments and ALL Home Secretaries, and have been.
Parties feel that they need to promise some actions in order to get votes, but it's hard to carry out those promises, maybe impossible.

absquatulize · 05/08/2024 08:34

EasternStandard · 04/08/2024 22:52

Nice try but nope.

I thought this became likely on the statement re smash the gangs. He is facing a big problem as numbers track upwards

It’s unlikely he can rid everywhere of trafficking networks and has set himself a near impossible task. Rising numbers is something which ends in public disorder

Migration does not have to end with public disorder.

Migration with a government and others in positions of power dehumanising migrants and inciting hatred will result in riots as we have seen.

Not the least Prime Ministerial.

Such a more leader that he and his party won a massive majority at the General Election a month ago?

If you are such an expert in leadership, may I ask did you stand in the election?
