I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

I reckon the response wouldnt have been much different even if his real name had been released that Tuesday night. Is it Islamophobia fuelling this or just a general xenophobia? I know mosques are being targeted but I feel its more a general xenophobia.

Well according to some posters it is Starmer's policy announcement on trafficking which is fuelling the riots!

It’s the policy which is leading to increased numbers and reported in the DM

This is helping fuel amongst other things

"Other things" including bad actors on line stirring the pot, racists and hostile states

Have to say, in all the discourse online underneath Starmer's tweets and so on, I've seen plenty of anti-Muslim comments, stuff about immigrants raping/murdering girls and so on, but nothing at all about 'Starmer's policy announcement'. It's like these people are not really into fine political detail but are into the shite that the Tommy Robinson lot usually chant.

It’s increasing numbers look at the DM and probably GB News. It is the media that will be looked at

If you read there not mn you’ll see an article up now on it, look at comments

noblegiraffe · 05/08/2024 00:16

Post-hoc rationalisation of fake-tweet fuelled thuggery.

As far as I know from all the research policy is not a pull factor or a deterrent for small boat crossings. I don’t know what else you’d expect government to do if it isn’t breaking up the gangs, dealing with applications smoothly and dealing with some of the issues that are causing global migration.

EasternStandard · 05/08/2024 00:19

So online discourse when it fits otherwise not looking

It’s expressed at the riots too.

Perhaps if the daily mail and GB news stopped lying to their readers / viewers it would be less of an issue.

Numbers were already up before the election. They will be rising more now because they always rise at this time of the year. It’s the weather.

Sendnudes · 05/08/2024 00:23

Do you honest think these white working class chavs sit at home reading the daily mail and watching GB news?!

On the other hand, I can well believe the Daily Mail and GB News after years of whipping up anti-immigrant hatred having to think very hard about how to blame this anti immigrant hatred on a brand new government.

Nigel Farage literally has a video posted to his timeline the day after the Southport murders suggesting that the government is withholding the truth about the murderer. But sure, this is on Starmer Hmm

That’s the crux of it. Any government that says it can curb unplanned immigration is lying, really. The Tories did this. But Labour felt the need to do so too.

I fail to see what Labour could possibly do about the gangs they claim they’ll “smash”. It’s not as though the police, customs and the security services haven’t been trying for years.

And how any government can make the UK less attractive to migrants from very poor countries is beyond me.

As for the new ‘Commander’ of the border that’s got to be the least enviable job in the civil service.

So the numbers will continue to go up. We either come to terms with that inevitability or we don’t.

Looking at Labour’s announcements about this subject, and others that have come up in just a month, I get the sense that we’re in for a great deal of Blairite word-play and grand titles, but in a rather more wooden and less convincing style than Blair brought with him.

Bloody Starmer, he'd only been in power 5 minutes and Trump nearly got assassinated!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

urbanbuddha · 05/08/2024 02:25

Wasntmeanttobelikethis · 04/08/2024 17:58

Think he’s off on his hols tomorrow

Why do you think that?
He’s the Prime Minister. There are riots going on all over the country.

Of course he’s not going on holiday just now.
What made you post that?

urbanbuddha · 05/08/2024 02:38

Charlie2121 · 04/08/2024 19:14

More people voted for Conservatives/Reform than voted Labour.

So what?

9,708,716 people voted Labour
6,828,925 people voted Conservative

So Labour won.
(If we add the total of Lib Dem and Green votes to the Labour vote that easily outnumbers the Con/Reform vote.)

TubeScreamer · 05/08/2024 06:21

I think this will be the quickest fall from grace in modern politics. If you start with such a huge majority the only way is down.

Yes exactly

I will add though Aus has managed this, which is also an answer to question below. In fact I don’t know any country that has managed trafficking with just those things listed by pp

They have a long way to go to beat the lies, lawbreaking, and corruption of the Conservatives.

Do you ever actually read the Mail newspaper or just the on line version? They have different editors. It was very critical of Conservative government at times and often has pieces by Labour ministers and figures, including Keir Starmer. How has it 'whipped up" hatred?

LizTruss · 05/08/2024 07:16

Ha ha, I've still done longer than he has.

So far, anyway.

Araminta1003 · 05/08/2024 07:19

One thing is clear, if this goes on much longer the police also deserve a pay rise.
They can’t strike like doctors and teachers and many had their weekends and even holidays etc cancelled?

itsgettingweird · 05/08/2024 07:29

I'm not blaming him. You can't hold one person responsible for this mess: the people responsible for the rioting are the rioters. What I'm saying is that politically over the last five years the increasing speed, and depth, of political and social divisions have increased, and instead of actually letting people express their views and experiences to allow us to find improvements, we've had some people use intemperate, and yes in some cases racist language, and in response we've had "no, someone else said something stupid and racist about this, so no one can say anything about it" as opposed to having the non extremes have honest,if sometimes difficult, conversations. That doesn't excuse or condone the thugs rioting now,but I think it speaks for enough people in this country, who'd also want the book thrown at the actual rioters, to not be able to dismiss them as racist scum but to have respectful conversations.

Agreed. But this is what the Tory's deliberately instigated and Refrom hijacked. Braverman (the daughter of immigrants) knew exactly what she was doing using language such as "invasion". They deliberately chose extreme language and used semantics to be able to say anyone who disagreed it was an invasion was a "woke lefty". They deliberately used 3 word slogans to simplify a complex situation.

So I don't understand what that has to do with Starmer?

You are trying to use a valid POV to attack someone because of your personal views. The very thing we are arguing isn't the right way to go about things.

I'm not saying he is the answer or he'll be better at the job. He hasn't had a chance. But you can't blame someone who's been leader of opposition for 4 years and in charge of the country for a month for causing the problem.

Smash the gangs is a three word slogan

And is unlikely to work which will keep this all going
