I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

It’s chaos though. Looking at the coverage tonight, the rioting is not abating

It will. The 2011 riots lasted about 5 nights and then it all calmed down. These have been going for 6 nights? so I reckon the end is nigh.

Not spread to Scotland or Wales either.

You honestly think the division in this country is purely stocked by the previous government?

Sara Khan (a former Tory adviser) thinks so.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/aug/04/conservatives-left-uk-wide-open-to-far-right-violence-says-former-adviser

It's an interesting article, and I can see her view, and I agree temperate language is better, but she does also state that difficult issues, she cites immigration, as issues that still can be debated but with less inflammatory language, and I agree: but for a debate you need and least two willing parties, and there is obviously this tendency to tar any views that diverge from a very narrow view getting called "far right", and that is counter productive.

Gaza protesters damaging statues.

Pro Palestinian protestors have not had a blind eye turned to them. Rightly. Disorder needs quelling wherever it comes from.

The "very narrow view" being intolerant of racism?

Those nicknames aren’t to my taste.

But you’d have to agree that Thatcher Milk Snatcher, the Maybot and Kami-Kwasi, among others, were popular among the left.

Not with me. See, ‘the left’ isn’t a homogenous group. Neither is the right. I imagine there are plenty of people on the right who think these daft names are irritating too.

I think perhaps it also involves wanting discussions based on facts and the rule of law.

But so far as I know nobody’s been arrested or charged for chanting in support of the murderous repressive regime in Yemen that advocates the murder of all Jews.

All the leftie loved calling Boris by his Sunday middle name of de Pfeffel. And Dishy Rishi was good.

All? I think you’ll find not. In fact if you have a search for me you’ll see I didn’t even like him being called Boris. It’s convention to use surnames for political figures. He didn’t need my help to look a bit silly.

Yeah, I get called "authoritarian left", "identarian left" or even "libtard" on here regularly. I'm not offended as 1) they are wrong and 2) why is being left wing an insult?

If you don't want to be associated with the far right, don't post far right tropes like "2 tier policing" when there are riots going on.

It's not a trope; it's a valid opinion based on events. Are you saying all protest,or disturbance, has been policed equally in the last five years? You can keep going with the "far right" to anything not as left as you/that you disagree with, but that approach has been getting less productive and tenable I'm what I'm sure you'll agree is the healthy democracy we'd like to live in?

It would be fine if far right "influencers" weren't gleefully stirring the pot

Maybe if you step away from twitter you will be less scared about the racist far right thugs. They'll all be crying in court soon enough.

Edited

No twitter account, but thanks for checking! You obviously do! Did I ever say I was scared? As a mixed race family we are definitely not scared of the labelled far right!

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 21:40

The "very narrow view" being intolerant of racism?

No, of your view of what is racist or far right: thinking 650,000 net immigrants in a year raises issues for integration is not racist for example, but you'll now say it is,and no actual progress is made.

cardibach · 04/08/2024 21:49

Rummly · 04/08/2024 21:43

As far as you know? How would you know?
Odd isn’t it. One poster gives an example of a group they think has been shown undue lenience, I show that’s not true and you pop up with another one. And actually, chanting that is disgusting and a hate crime, but it isn’t criminal damage, assault or attempted murder, is it? Which is what we were actually talking about. Have any of these rioters been arrested for shouting racist names or slogans?

Clavinova · 04/08/2024 21:51

BIossomtoes · 04/08/2024 21:00

It’s not a popularity contest. What would you cut to recoup £1.5 billion?

Around £6 billion could be saved here;

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jul/26/ed-miliband-labour-honour-pledge-11bn-overseas-climate-aid

cardibach · 04/08/2024 21:54

Well, given that environmental issues will cause more people to be displaced and create more of a migrant issue which needs to be dealt with, it might be a false economy.

I'm not a Labour supporter but Rachel Thieves? Are you a wannabe tabloid headline writer?

There are some very odd posts on this thread in a very odd style.

I didn't come up with the names, already on social media.

MadameMassiveSalad · 04/08/2024 21:56

Jeezus give him a chance!

I'd take an intelligent Labour leader over the racist tory/ reform idiots any day. They're totally responsible for inciting these fat gammon faced C**ts up North.

That's not the same as burning down shops and libraries, setting things on fire near buildings, throwing bricks at police and members of the public and looting, is it?

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 21:57

Honestly. Sounds like abusive men saying "women do it too" when they get called on their shit.

Eh?
I think the people rioting are far right racists and I think the people going on about "two tier policing", "but Palestine protests..." are at the very least far right sympathisers. Immigration has nothing to do with it.

To be fair the BBC implied an element of two-tier policing in their news report last night - they showed a clip of a policeman telling a group of counter protesters they were not going to be arrested and to 'get rid of any weapons'.

100% agree @CassieMaddox

suburberphobe · 04/08/2024 22:00

Its a shame so many young men are going to carry the consequences of a criminal record though.

Really? Are you standing up for these thugs? Wearing swastikas as tattoos, etc.?
Causing mayhem and terrorism - because that's what it is, causing terror and refusing to obey the rule of law.

What you sow, so shall you reap.

”So far as I know” pretty obviously means “there’s been no report of it”. 🙄

Anyone shouting racist slogans that would cause harassment or distress should be arrested. It’s a public order offence. TBH I’d be amazed if chants and threats don’t feature in the many trials that will have to be held for EDL thugs.

I don’t give a fuck what offences you think you were discussing in your own head. Racist chanting is wrong if it’s directed at anyone, including Jews.

No, it’s actually worse. Inciting people to murder is far worse than looting and burning buildings.
