I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

I like him- he feels like a proper PM and it feels like the adults have taken charge. He's definitely a details man- unlike Boris who basically knew sweet FA and chucked the odd latin phrase around to sound clever. Give the bloke a chance.

People who criticise Starmer for his public speaking, weren't paying attention during PMQs when partygate broke, Starmer didn't do anything dramatic, there was no gotcha moment, he just gently tied Johnson up in knots until Johnson was trapped in his own lies.

This is just so petty from Labour, it's like their punishing the elderly because that demographic are more likely to vote conservative. Shame on them for targeting a vulnerable group.

It's not punishing the elderly. It's levelling the playing field and making them take their share of the financial pain after 14 years of having been shielded at the expense of the young, the working poor and the disabled. These are also vulnerable groups - older people are not special when it comes to vulnerability.

I don’t have a problem with this policy.

But why did Darren Jones, now Chief Secretary to the Treasury, write to the Tory government just months ago - when he was the shadow - telling them how appalling that benefit cut would be? Was he lying?

Two Tier Keir and Let Pensioners Freeze Rachel Reeves...god, this motley crew are making me long for the heady days of the Tory government.

All this tactical voting at the election has led to this government in charge, only 32% wanted them and they jolly well got them! Now the suffering starts.

Also known as Robber Reeves and Rachel Thieves. Her popularity rating has dropped from +11% to -12%.

The pensioners wouldn't vote left anyway so a don't think his support will be that dented. Giving WFA to wealthy OAPS is a waste of public money.

What did you call the Chancellor who wanted to remove free school meals from children during covid?

I wonder if the army will be drafted in to keep the peace.

I had a bet with my friend after the election on what the first major catastrophe would be.

We both said the uprising of the unions. She said medical ie ambulances, doctors.

I predicted the use of Green Goddesses when the firefighters go on strike, but did not anticipate the armed forces on the streets restoring law and order especially within weeks of the win.

Sort it out Starmer.

This pensioner will always vote left and you’re absolutely right, throwing money at people who don’t need it is madness.

Starmer has been PM for 30 days. I’m sure we would all have preferred it if he had completely transformed our country, got our economy firing on all cylinders, solved all our deep seated social problems and achieved world peace in that time.

But, given that he took over a complete shitshow, and he is a human being not God or Harry fucking Potter, we have to accept than he can’t actually perform miracles. So let’s give the guy a chance, shall we?

Well said 👏👏

In the interests of factual accuracy I would like to point out that it would be illegal for the army to be on the streets of GB.

Are you proposing a change in the law.

Additionally I would like to point out that Green Goddesses were retired as a result of the 2004 Fire and Rescue Services Act.

There is no need. The police are capable of managing this.

Not sure what this "army on the streets" line is, but it seems to be cropping up a bit

Largely because they were dangerous to the troops who had to serve in them. They kept tipping over.

Nobody is disputing that. It's the pensioners who are just above the cut off for pension credit who will suffer and likely die from the cold this winter, that people have concerns about.

It's a bit disingenuous to say Labour haven't sorted migration as first I think folk will find Yvette Cooper has laid out exactly what labour are doing, and plan to do, in this area. Secondly, it obviously takes more than a minute to achieve their plans, perhaps people should wait to see how it works out a bit longer before burning hotels. Personally I think this Labour government are quite harsh on migration, and partly due to an understanding of what the U.K. want. They also have a huge mess left behind to resolve. It's just ridiculous to say they're not listening or leading in one month - everything I see suggests the opposite.
However, I'm interested to know what others see as a failure to address what the U.K. people want and how that would be delivered - what exactly should they have done re immigration to quell people's concerns already?

No they are spending billions of taxpayers money on housing illegal people. And people expect him to say something about non white people causing riots and disorder @BIossomtoes .

No money is spent on housing illegal immigrants. They hide from the authorities and don’t get anything from the state. There’s a lot being spent on asylum seekers who may or may not have a claim for asylum, but that’s because the previous government deliberately stopped processing in order to manufacture a crisis. Well, the6 be got one now.

Wishfulthinking1977 · 04/08/2024 21:00

He's fucked! As would anyone in this situation at the moment! Im not a fan but not a fan of any political group ATM! This was a simmering pot and it has boiled over. I'm really not sure how it's going to be resolved?! His last speeches really didn't help, the people outnumber the police 10 to 1 and we don't have enough armed forces to deal with it. It's not going to end well 😔

mandajane81 · 04/08/2024 20:27

I'm pretty sure those arriving on a dinghy with no documents are classed as illegal

Not if they claim asylum at the first opportunity. If they are being housed then they did. You may not like it, but that’s the law. And there would be far fewer if the previous government had actually assessed a few claims…

You've already said that you don't need the WFA, good for you if you're that well off and this doesn't affect you. But many pensioners are living in poverty and do need the WFA. The cut off point needs to be higher.

Wonder if you'd be so happy with this decision if you were struggling.

Known as that by people who think they are terribly clever for making silly unfunny jokes about people’s names. Hopeless.

And most of those people abhor the rioting and the rioters. More people are turning out to oppose or clear up their mess than are rioting. I don’t think there’s a serious ‘government by consent’ issue, do you?

SpaceHogger · 04/08/2024 21:13

Anyone with legitimate concerns is welcome to air them in a reasonable manner, we are a democracy after all

No, people have been trying to discuss their concerns for years, and were instantly shot down and called racist and bigots. Anyone who has turned to Reform as they feel there is nowhere rose to go, called scum.

There has been no reasonable discussion.

And here we are. Far right riots.

Perhaps if people’s legitimate concerns were heard, we’d avoided this.

2-Tier Kier still isn’t listening and the country is burning.
