Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Poverty, disadvantage, lack of hope.

Disenfranchised young men, no jobs, no housing, no prospects.

100,000 vacancies in the NHS. Thousands of jobs going on Indeed. There are jobs, they just don't have the brains to do them.

I still live at home. I'm not rioting and setting hotels alight because I'm unhappy with that. It's not an excuse.

@Hoppinggreen I've seen your posts for many years and have always imagined you to have lived in somewhere very fancy like Notting Hill.
There is about 20 posters usernames I think I've invented little backstories from and you got a detached Notting hill property with a shit ton of bedrooms and maybe a swimming pool/basement in the gym.

Not whaboutory at all, but just interested in why the poster chose examples of white on black crime to describe racism. Of course no definitive conclusion by police on those crimes, because without the killer actually saying ‘I did it because they were white’, there can be no conclusion. Whereas when it’s the flip side, the attack is declared racial by default.

As opposed to throwing drain cleaner in the face of a woman because she dared to turn down a man !!

As pp have pointed out, this has been rumbling around for years.

Even in 2018, 4 in 10 people thought multiculturalism undermines British culture, and this was before 'the boats' and unprecedented numbers of immigrants coming to the UK (1.2 million in 2023 as opposed to 600,000 in 2018)

Not everywhere in the north has cheap housing. I’m sick to death of arguing about this with southerners who think all our houses cost £50k. There’s a thread this morning by a pp selling her lovely house on the south coast for £310k. A similar house where I live would be the same price. My dd paid £350k for a tiny 2 up 2 down terraced house with no parking in a ‘nicer’ northern area.

There are areas that are still very cheap here, because nobody wants to live there as they’re so rough. Ironically, these areas now tend to have a high immigrant population, because that’s all they can afford. People say they’re ’no go’ areas because of this. Those of us with longer memories understand that they were no go areas long before the Muslims moved in.

Both the attackers had mental health problems and attacked people at random. Also one of the 3 people who were killed in Nottingham was mixed race - Grace's Kumars father is Asian.

Well they need to extradite him and throw the book at him.
To make this about Muslims is completely wrong. They are not to blame for any of this but getting the blame anyway.
He needs to be investigated and prosecuted for this.

And a hot spell of weather. Rioting is a heatwave activity. No one is rioting in the drizzle or sleet.

Decline/removal of mining, manufacturing, fishing etc industries with sod all investment in these communities. Scores of working class with no real prospects once leaving school. Large minority communities in some towns, within which there is huge sense of community, mutual support, multi-generational living helps with childcare etc, excellent above and beyond work ethic, expectation that you do well at school with profesdional (doctor, lawyer, accountant) aspirations. On-going racial tensions, remembering white males are the ones most likely to leave school with few or no qualifications. Largely ignored by Westminster except for the occasional toss of money on a 'levelling up' scheme. Perceptions that all immigrants are illegal and illegal or legal, are given things that the white communities aren't - housing, TVs, phones, food, cash.

Well yes, the irony of making comments like this on a thread about racism kind of illustrates the challenge doesn’t it of people not liking or being dismissive of anyone they think is not like them or doesn’t think like them ie northerners are more racist.

In that specific case, it was a racial attack. Did I say that there are no racially motivated attacks? Nope. I’m stating that racial attacks can be any race against any other race. Which you don’t acknowledge as it doesn’t fit your narrative. And the blatant prejudice on here from people on their perceived views of Northerners is astounding. Probably from people who’ve never travelled North of Bristol. People in the North can and do live comfortable lives. We do have lovely three bedroomed homes, have access to lovely schools, beautiful countryside, and great communities. But like the South, London in particular, we do have pockets of poverty and idiot behaviour.

What about the attack against the soldier last month in Kent, or the murder of the two teens in Nottingham last year? Both by none white people,against white people? Were they motivated by race? Did the attacker/killer choose their victim due to the colour of their skin?

I’m so glad someone has brought this up at last.

Imagine if we interchanged a few things here;

White guy kills 2 black students and janitor
White guy tries to kill black solider and his wife
White guy goes on vicious killing spree at Beyoncé dance class and stabs 13 women and children of colour, killing 3.

It would be labelled a racist attack and our whole country would be lambasted for our intolerance.

Kill a white person, they must have MH issues
Kill a personal of colour and it is racism.

And you know what, it is racism, but why the double standards?

That’s why people in Liverpool and Southport think the police are lying.

It's not as simple as 'not having the brains'. Most employers want relevant experience and/or qualifications. Just done a quick search for NHS vacancies within 20 miles of my area to see what our share of the '100,000 vacancies' is. 15 - 10 of which require clinical qualifications.

Starmer and Rayner making publicity out of Taking The Knee does not convince many that he is sympathetic to white working class.

The attacker didn’t target Grace. She was only attacked because she was trying to protect her friend. And I would guess most murderers have MH issues, because how else would they become killers? Normal rational people don’t.
