Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

I’m in Scotland, and although we have a similar demographic to the north of England, we don’t seem to be seeing the same issues with riots at the moment.

is Scotland just a bit more left wing? A bit more tolerant? Or just a bit colder?

We tend to have different preoccupations, particularly the Central Belt.

wastingtimeonhere · 04/08/2024 15:30

There are plenty of racists down south too, but we have nice weather atm.
There are areas in southern towns given nicknames due to the number of immigrants. Head to local housing office, the posters in a dozen or more languages.

My FB is awash, with it. The 'organisers' have focused on up north, probably because they are too busy enjoying the beach and family bbqs and don't want their weekend disrupted.
I would also add distrust of authority to list of egg ons. I've heard ' we need our own riot' more than once in the last few days on fb, and from earwigging listening to pub conversations.
Also, to add to the mix, I wonder if there is slightly less appetite down south, as being caught, prosecuted, potentially losing jobs costs people homes, housing costs are so high even rent isn't covered on benefits. Only those with nothing to lose would be stupid enough to put themselves in that position.

TinklySnail · 04/08/2024 15:30

There was never this much interest or hatred for the disruption and arrests the Palestine protests generated on here.
This is akin to the BLM protests (which were nothing to do with the UK)
Where there is resentment there will be unrest.
I assume it’s easier to label a certain demographic as nazi than to identify or acknowledge the root cause for the problem.
Perhaps arresting TR for soliciting violence would be a start.

40andlovelife · 04/08/2024 15:30

Their needs have been ignored by the government. Their communities have been disproportionately affected by immigration. They are sick of being labelled as fascists for wanting controlled immigration. Most northerners or even the people labelled as anti immigration are not against immigration. They want it to be controlled. Communities have changed drastically. The rioters actions are terrible but there is a long history and story that has led to this point,

Lwrenn · 04/08/2024 15:32

I'd like to point out I think that rioters are racists.
Not just working class people.
Just because many of the rioters will have been from lower social economic groups of disenfranchised people, doesn't mean every person who are also from those groups are racist. I'm not. My pals aren't. Neighbours aren't.
But if you're sharing hate and attacking mosques and people of colour, you are a fucking racist. Regardless of how much or little you have in life, if you're blaming Muslims for your problems, you're racist.

SpaceHogger · 04/08/2024 15:33

This was a boil waiting to burst, civil unrest has been brewing for ages. The killings in Southport lit the fuse to it.

Yes, there are right wing groups, but not all. There are many locals getting involved.

I’m from up north, live down south. Why is it mostly northern towns? Well it’s because we are all so poorly educated, ignorant and racist of course. It’s got nothing to do with the massive inequality between industry and jobs between north and south.

When you have little opportunity in your area, you become focused on what you do have, your community. When that community is eroded by mass immigration, with no assimilation, you’ve not even got your community.

That is what has happened up north.

I’m surprised you didn’t see this coming. It’s been brewing for ages. Southport was the straw that broke the camels back.

The issue comes from them setting a hotel on fire on the off chance it may be housing refugees though, or black people being targeted for no reason

Strange nothing happened under 14 years of tory government that facilitated this immigration issue? Strange how now labour get in the far right start up it's coordinated bh reform and tommy Robinson and Russia propaganda and by the way I live in dewsbury loads of muslism they don't affect my life but these idiots should be shipped out. I would swap immigrants for you guys any day

I think the lying after the Southport murders sparked this.

People have been lied to for years.

Would you swap for any immigrant? Or would you like to do some checks on them first?

What lying it was Russian propaganda that suggested he was Muslim he wasn't he was British born not Muslim. Do you know how the law works he was under 18 so couldn't mention name the judge did because he allowed it

I think he was arrested for similar but legged it abroad (using his Irish passport probably)

Daltonbear1 · 04/08/2024 15:35

I am very much upset saw a video of a black man being attacked badly by loads if white people yesterday not in my name not in my name filthy fascist scum

Poverty, deprivation, lack of social mobility and lack of diversity

This, along with lower levels of education. (Those in poverty usually have lower attainment - not always of course)

I've yet to meet a Reform voter who wasn't racist though. So I'm allowed to judge people on choosing to vote for a party who has all MPs that have been openly racist or xenophobic at times.

The problem is that the term racist is taken to the extreme (excuse the pun) by people on MN.

There was a thread on here yesterday where people were saying that a black lady's husband was racist and that racists would marry black people!

I am sure that that the likes of Tony Robinson have had lots of black and Muslim girlfriends! He is a racist. Someone who marries a black person is not racist.

Most people who voted Reform are just fed of of nothing being done to stop the boats and feel that they are getting priority over the indigenous population. What is wrong with that? I think most people who voted Conservative agree with them. Are you saying that people shouldn't vote Conservative because you don't like their views?

What is your definition of racism? I am genuinely curious

It strikes me that the definition of racism has morphed into any criticism at all of someone who is not white british? And it certainly can never apply the other way round (e.g. when people use phrases such as White trash, white bitch etc)

We need to be able to criticise people whatever their race or religion? And the constant accusations of racism whatever is said, in whatever spirit, just shuts down conversation and builds resentment, and in this case eventually violence.

Livelovebehappy · 04/08/2024 15:36

Historically most riots have been in and around London. So the North are rioting this year, probably back to London next year. London don’t have many riots these days because of the police having to have a softly softly approach to keep people happy - ie, letting the potential rioters get on with what they want to get on with, with not much intervention. Let’s be honest, the Pro Palestinian marches in the capital have been largely left to their own devices. Had the police tried to stop the antisemitic chants and other stuff, the result would probably pretty much be riots and looting. Also events such as the Notting Hill carnival, where the police have had to back right off in recent years for fear of riots.

Christine1998 · 04/08/2024 15:37

There are riots in the south too. It’s not only a northern problem.

Anonym00se · 04/08/2024 15:37

Sethera · 04/08/2024 15:12

Worth noting as well that utilities charges are no different and as it is generally colder up north, heating bills are higher.

Yes. Insurance will also be more expensive in poorer areas.

But I’m sure the £23k average HOUSEHOLD income here will easily stretch to it all when they can get a pint for less than a fiver in some pubs.

I'd say punching black people just for the colour of their skin is racism. Throwing acid in women's faces because their skin colour makes you think they're of a certain religion is racism. Attacking women and removing their head coverings is racism.

Incakewetrust · 04/08/2024 15:39

The unrest is happening a lot in poorer areas.
Poorer areas generally have poorer education and higher criminal activity.
A lot of the rioters don't care about what happened in Southport, they just want to cause chaos with their mates because they enjoy the anarchy.

ThisGreyPanda · 04/08/2024 15:40

There are some northern towns where the proportion of immigrants is very high which is why the EDL and other scumbags target these towns. I used to live on one of these towns and it should be noted that the rioters used to arrive on many many coaches from all over England.

What about the attack against the soldier last month in Kent, or the murder of the two teens in Nottingham last year? Both by none white people, against white people? Were they motivated by race? Did the attacker/killer choose their victim due to the colour of their skin?

Are you trying to use whataboutism to justify violence against women and girls?

It's just disgraceful.

FitAt50 · 04/08/2024 15:44

I think much of it is because of poverty, high unemployment, large immigrant population, low education and boredom. They blame 'foreigners' for the crap lives they have and don't want to accept its their own fault. They believe all the rubbish about immigrants getting free housing and huge benefits and just want to lash out.
