Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Also, where refugees have saved lives eg rescued children from a fire, they are often fast tracked for citizenship.

I think it must be a bitter pill to swallow. Much of England is uneducated and racist and there is an utter lack of resistance among the general population outside of London.

I’m not justifying I’m thinking that’s probably how they see it, that’s why I have the example of my accent being highlighted as if you are not modern RP with a certain type of person - many more of these people in London IME, they assume lots about your background. Middlesbrough has the most refugee asylum seekers in thr Uk. Because it is cheap to house them there. It’s a really diverse town but I think this has added more fuel to the fire

My point is in London, just by its nature of beong so huge and multicultural we counter racism before it turns into thuggery.

I mean, the Met alone does a pretty solid job of keeping racist thuggery going.

It absolutely is. 19,586 hate crimes recorded between ‘22 and ‘23 in the London metropolitan area. The second highest was the West Midlands at 8,897 for the same 12 month period. Where I live in the North, we were in 24th place with 1315 in the same period. Quite a big difference between 1st and 2nd place

Leeds University. 3 years of living there.
Have in laws who live in the Midlands.
Yes, both places are much more divided than London.
We were going on Anti Nazi League marches as teenagers in the 90s. White, black, brown people all together.
The rest of the country needs to as well.
