Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Wow
They have grievances??
How the fuck is it okay to blame their grievances on Muslims and refugees from war torn countries???
Looking at them they look highly illiterate and easily swayed by hate inciters like Tommy Robinson, Farage and Lawrence Fox.
Those of you excusing this vile behaviour because of their grievances need to look closelt at yourselves and make sure YOU arent scapegoating Muslims and refugees.
It is diagusting how complacent British people have become at othering and scapegoating.
Give your heads a wobble!

@Devonbabs

I can totally relate to what you are saying. Our area is gradually changing and it is not for the better.

Wow

You won’t get deleted for cheering on the death of white people though so no worries

Tamworth is in Staffordshire.

It always amazes me when North/South threads pop up on MN how utterly parochial and ridiculously ignorant many people are about the North of England.

It was like this when I went to work in the City as a graduate in 1995, I don't have much of a Northern accent, but my goodness, when people discovered I was from the North. It was absolute madness the stupid ideas people had about Northerners.

I don't think everyone from London is a pearly king eating jellied eels and singing 'roll out the barrel'.

Why the utterly stereotypical ideas about Northerners?

Why does it matter if your accent is strong - be proud of where you are from!

I think calling these events protests is to give them a legitimacy they don't deserve. Throwing bricks, attacking police officers, setting fire to libraries, citizens advice and hotels, and looting from shops isn't protest. These people are using concerns individuals have for their own criminal advantage. If they were intending to make genuine protest, they would liaise with the police and organise a time and date. Not attack and burn. Some of them, and some people not participating may have reasonable concerns but this is not the way to do it and I hope they are all rounded up and prosecuted. It does nothing for their cause if they have one, if anything it delegitimises it.
If they want Reform UK to pursue their claims in Parliament or through councils that's the way to do it, or make appointments with their new MPs

I agree with this. These are not protests.

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 22:37

On another note, seeing all this makes me very happy to live in London where we live with, work with, educate are children with people from all over the wprld who have chosen the UK as their home.along with those who did not choose but were born here and not with English dna.
The country is in a rotten state and Brexit really proved how much Britain has sunk.

It doesn't, I just don't have a strong Northern accent. It is what it is.

I guess the only way it matters is because Southerners and Northerners find it very difficult to place my accent.

You know what stood out the most in this? The “white British born” comment, and your relief at the statistic. The fact that you relate the skin colour white to being both British AND of some kind of elite status you feel you also identify as, calls you out for the racist that you are.

Your VERY long post started out like you were complaining about cultural differences, but if that were the case, skin colour wouldn’t have come into your preference of neighbours.

So you don’t want to live near black British people? Just the decent upstanding white folk that you view yourself as?

If you were my neighbour, I’d be moving out asap

if you had bothered reading my detailed post you would understand my movement between being welcoming of various cultures, how those cultures gradually took over the area I was living in and made it a living hell.

Yes I was relieved at the demographic of a new area because I didn’t want the sane experience to happen again. If you haven’t had it happen to you, you have no idea.

interestingly my new neighbour lived very close to where I did and also made the 200 mile move for similar reasons.

im sorry you find it offensive, the Muslim and South East Asian immigrants that took over my old area made me very sensitive to the terrible results of multiculturalism - so I don’t want to have to suffer that again thank you. Do I mind if the odd neighbour isn’t white British - no. But I want to live in an area with people who are part of my culture.

hamstersarse · 04/08/2024 22:40

@MadameMassiveSalad and your deleted post

I think maybe it’s possible that London has less ‘community’ than many northern towns, just due to its sheer size, and connectedness

Small towns have historically had better communities. I find it pretty gross that people are just expected to change their communities without any choice in the matter

I bet the same people who don’t care about British communities are also disgusted with the expat lot who go to Spain and eat fish and chips

It is staffordshire, but not that far from Birmingham.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 22:43

@Devonbabs I will be honest about this- I hate racism as I like to take people individually as I find them and I certainly don't agree with rioting and looting asasokurion to anything - but had to drive through Acton last week with H to fetch something from a business. Hadn't been through it for 14 years and if I lived there I myself would have moved out - not because of the fact the neighbours may well have been Asian or Arabic - I don't care about that, but because the main shopping areas and cafes etc looked so bloody grim and it was 100% geared up to the new demographic - no decent pubs , hardly any pubs or bars in fact , halal produce everywhere , no nice chain shops I would actually want to go in - and it was really scruffy and lots of gangs loitering about . Sorry but for me it just wasn't remotely pleasant -

I do feel a bit of a hypocrite saying it but in all honesty in a situation like that - I would definitely have been moving on.

Tatare · 04/08/2024 22:43

Really, my point being, that people who aren't from the North expect Northeners to have a broad accent. It's the point I was making that lots of people have stereotypical ideas about 'Northeners' that are fallacious at best.

Unless people have lived it, they don’t understand. I used to be the most open, racially inclusive person. But seeing my community destroyed and it being very clear white British people aren’t welcome in theirs, it’s almost impossible to see any value in multiculturalism

AvrielFinch · 04/08/2024 22:43

Oldseagull · 04/08/2024 22:24

You've completely nailed the experience.

We moved away too. The racism from the migrants was starting to get scary. The hatred for black people was shocking,I heard words and terms from gangs of the men that I'd never heard in person before.

They were friendly enough when there were only a few families and they had to mix. As soon as they hit critical mass it started to get weird very quickly.

The account does not ring true at all. Not one place was named. I lived in Leicester for a few years in a small terraced house and felt perfectly safe.

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 22:44

When the EDL visit London to "protest" they travel in on buses. They are jot from London. They are normally pissed up and coked up to the eyeballs.
Griveances my arse!!
Vile thugs with no purpose.
A waste of food and air.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/08/2024 22:45

Devonbabs

But go ahead, encourage the immigrants into your area. You’ll soon regret it and turn out like the rest of us who have been through it. My area was nice, it wasn’t some inner city slum. It had many outstanding schools (why it was targeted). Look forward to hearing from you then.“

Was born in Streatham in the early 60s, family moved to Brixton when I was 2, most of my school friends were black and brown, moved into my husband to be’s house in the Elephant in late 80s. Many of our friends and neighbours likewise black, brown and latterly Eastern European.
Diverse areas with large immigrant populations, every one. Never had any problems. Only moved to the NW coast 14 years ago.

Maybe it’s you?

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 22:45

You women defending these literal idiot RACIST thugs.
I suspect you are racists yourselves.

suburburban · 04/08/2024 22:46

Oh I read it, I read every word, and then I got to the “white British born” comment and suddenly your entire post took on a whole different slant.

Would I like to live amongst many many refugees with cultural differences? No, not especially, not if we were al, segregated.

Would I purposely seek to move to somewhere that was 98% white British? No.

I might choose to live somewhere that is majority British-or rather English speaking, for cultural and language reasons, but skin colour wouldn’t be a factor. If you’re born in Britain then you’re British, we would speak the same language and have shared experiences of life

They are Northern and from the Midlands.
I remember London in the 90s and also the Anti Nazi League.
Far right stand no chance in London.
The rest of the country needs to get its shit together and its complacent acceptance of demonizing refugees and Muslims.
100 years ago Jews were scapegoated all over Europe.and now Muslims.
It is NOT okay.

Why? Because in London WHITE people alomg with evenryine else makes a stand.

You need to as well.
Grievances my arse!
