Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Criticise people for what they do and say. Not simply because they are poor. And if looking at poor people means you can't even eat, get some therapy to deal with your extreme classness.

You are the one who called them poor! I know plenty of decent law abiding poor people. These lot are just a mess; I doubt poverty has anything to do with it. Why? Because the majority of poor people do not act like this.

These lot look like they haven't bathed for a while due to the excitement of causing terror to others. Ask one of them to name the three children who were murdered and I bet you they wouldn't even know ONE name of one of the children.

@Crikeyalmighty where in the south is similar to Sunderland and Stockport and some other northern towns in terms of deprivation, poverty and lack of access to services?

Some really shit areas in Kent too.

Apparently Jaywick is the most deprived area in the UK.

BlackForestCake · 04/08/2024 19:25

Much of Cornwall is dirt poor too. There is poverty everywhere. 40 years of Thatcherism has done that, not immigration.

Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is in the East of England. 89% of its residents were born in Britain, 94.6% are white, and it has millions of tourists visit every year. It does have the deprivation issues of many seaside towns, but it is very different to the northern areas we are talking about.

I know. Jaywick is tiny and has access to spectacular beaches.

wombat15 · 04/08/2024 19:30

I'm not sure if is anything to go with being poor or multicultural. There are some really poor areas in Birmingham and probably more multicultural than anywhere else but I don't think there have been riots. Perhaps the far right know they would be outnumbered and are sticking to easier targets.

There is nothing wrong with being poor. Poor is not an insult. I have already said I am clearly against the rioting and the racism, and that includes on MN by many middle class people.
But poor teeth is overwhelming an issue of poverty.

Leeds is posh ffs.

Its got a Harvey Nicks!!!

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 04/08/2024 19:31

pleasehelpwi3 · 04/08/2024 18:17

Exactly. The previous government wouldn't let them work- be it Syrian surgeons or Eritrean lawyers etc.....so how are they meant to look after themselves?
Or would you prefer they starve in the streets?

What do France give refugees?

Sethera · 04/08/2024 19:33

wutheringkites · 04/08/2024 18:51

This is clearly fake.

I was walking through Leeds yesterday and literally the only thing on offer was sweetcorn served out of a cart outside Harvey Nicks.

What? I regularly have a wander round the shops in Leeds, and there is 'street food' in mobiles from a variety of cultures all over the place, not to mention plenty of cafes and restaurants (including a cat cafe 😻). I can't believe they've all vanished in the couple of weeks since I was last there!

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 04/08/2024 19:33

.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 19:33

@Fluufer Medway towns pretty crap - gravesend, Chatham, gillingham, places like Clacton, parts of Swindon not great, Slough bloody grim, Maidenhead I think is grim too with some posher 'bits' shepton mallett only 10 miles away from us in Bath - freaking awful, some bits around Southampton and Portsmouth not good at all, large areas of Bristol bleeding awful - I defy anyone to say Withywood or Filton is remotely pleasant

Why did you mention Stockport by the way - did you mean Southport ( which is actually mainly pretty nice) and shows you are just making stuff up

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 04/08/2024 19:35

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 17:54

Lol, come up here and see for yourself. That was directed at@WhimsicalGubbins76 let’s just bet that you won’t want to move to some of those places involved in the riots.

Edited

Im from the North West…..

Summerflames · 04/08/2024 19:35

So how do we as a society tackle poverty? And poor education?

AvrielFinch · 04/08/2024 19:36

@Crikeyalmighty do not accuse me of being a liar. Shitty thing to do. Yes I meant Southport.

Summerflames · 04/08/2024 19:36

And where are the innovative people? The ones who create jobs and give people a decent standard of living?

Supersimkin7 · 04/08/2024 19:37

There’s more housing stock in mainland Europe so the pressure on local homes in say France or Germany when the small boat people roll up isn’t as bad.

I think this lot of uk rioters are pointless troublemakers but they do need to be listened to. Hard.

We all need to set them right partic on the racist front and the asylum seeker front - we need to talk so scapegoating stops.

OhMaria2 · 04/08/2024 19:38

TinklySnail · 04/08/2024 18:59

Yes I agree, but I do feel SM has fuelled the rise of social discontent.
I’m of an age where I knew life before SM. You only knew what was going on by reading the papers, watching the news and local gossip. Now anyone can post anything and people are taking it as gospel.

So am I. Now WC people can see what people say about them twenty four hours a day and aren't limited to their choice of newspaper so they can read a version of " they're too lazy to do the jobs the immigrants do but really we expect them to work for less and accept a decline in living standards because we hate them " and speaking like theyre not in the room across a variety of news platforms for free. Yay

GiddyNavyJoker · 04/08/2024 19:39

Being bought in the east of England and now living on the south coast I have only lived in predominantly white areas and thus never really seen immigration as a problem. One of my local towns has a high population of Eastern Europeans and Romanians but I don't see that as a problem. I see videos online of some of the violence that happens on the streets in big cities up north and quietly say to my self "thank God my kids don't live there", which is sad really.

One of the things I love is when my kids describe someone to me, not once do they ever mention that persons skin colour. They don't see race, just people. Racism isn't something we're born with, it's taught from older generations. I like to think that slowly we're getting there, just in small steps.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 19:40

@AvrielFinch but Southport is not particularly deprived or lacking in services, so why pop in your list if you know what you are talking about?? It's considered moderately posh

AvrielFinch · 04/08/2024 19:41

Summerflames · 04/08/2024 19:35

So how do we as a society tackle poverty? And poor education?

We reinstate services. Everywhere should have libraries, museums, attractive parks, local events. We improve the physical look of the towns and cities. We have economic policies that prioritise investment into business rather than housing. We tax very heavily second homes and holiday homes. We give far better rights to tenants and lodgers. We improve schools and the NHS. We build lots of new housing. We increase the minimum wage a lot.
And we increase the criteria for disability benefits for children and working age adults.

PickAChew · 04/08/2024 19:42

Summerflames · 04/08/2024 19:36

Like Hays travel? Employ 500 people and offer apprenticeships. Got their windows smashed in Sunderland.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 19:42

@GiddyNavyJoker I do agree about that and hence why I'm alarmed at the amount of these 'geezers' taking kids along - great example, not! and teens looting shops.
