Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Thank you. I'm so SICK of people making this kind of generalisation about tradesmen. My sister-in-law knows my brother and my dad are both tradesmen and I still remember the time when she referred to their jobs as being 'manual labour' during a family get-together (knowing full well that's what they do).

Its such a snobby generalisation and yet I know damn well they earn significantly more than what she will be as a school business manager, despite her first class degree. People make these generalisations but then they whinge and whine when they can't find a tradesman to build their extension or replace their kitchen because they are so in demand and its not as simple as doing a bit of 'manual labour' that any 'undereducated twat' could undertake.

I know right. It’s as if anyone could just knock up a house, or an extension, or re-wire a house or build anything. Coz it’s just low IQ ‘white van men’ that do it so it must be easy right.

Never mind the fact it’s project management, maths, understanding space, drainage, landscapes… I could go on and on. Alongside how physically hard the job is. The world wouldn’t exist without ‘manual labour’

Sorry, off topic, but how dare you refer to tradesmen as 'undereducated twats'! What a stupid ignorant comment.

You do know that being a tradesman requires more than just physical labour don't you? I have tradesmen in my family and they are very successful in their field. My dad has been a joiner and builder all his life and has overseen extensive projects on large properties. He is highly skilled and sought after. As is my other relative.
He is not an 'undereducated twat' as you have labelled people like him and in fact I can confidently say he earns more per year than any of the senior professionals in the organisation that I work for. So you can keep your snobby opinions to yourself.

Edited

Well exactly, there’s an arrogance that certain jobs are important and sitting on your arse at a desk all day in basically an important job- if you don’t manage that you’re lacking in someway. Some people don’t appear to have experienced life outside their bubble.

I grew up in a Lancashire former mill town which has a large Muslim population. I left at 18 in 2000 and have not lived in the north since. The different communities were and still are completely segregated, there is very little integration and almost completely seperate schools. There is racism on both sides- I was called a stupid fucking white bitch more than once by complete strangers. There are also huge amounts of poverty, a feeling of being ignored by government and very little prospect of a better life for many. Add to that issues with grooming gangs and the many working class struggling to make ends meet whilst perceiving that those arriving in the UK are handed housing, benefits etc and sadly you can start to see why these areas are fertile for exploitation by the far right.

Agree here. People are too quick to blame racism entirely on white people. I'm a northerner too and the Muslim/pakistani origin population in particular (even if born here) do not want to mix with the rest of the community up here. This breeds resentment. Agree with the poster who said there's less room for this to happen down in London. I'm not condoning the awful rioting behaviour but it's more nuanced than the 'poor ethnic minority groups, they're faultless' rhetoric.

EddyF · 04/08/2024 18:57

If they are ugly to me, they are ugly to me. Add in their nasty behaviour, calling them ugly is the least of a concern. I can't even eat whilst watching them as it turns me off my food.

So for everyone who suffers from poverty we must look away when they are looking to hurt others based on religion/skin colour? I think the fuck not.

Criticise people for what they do and say. Not simply because they are poor. And if looking at poor people means you can't even eat, get some therapy to deal with your extreme classness.

Exactly, so much more to it than sawing wood, stacking a few bricks etc... and the fact the poster who labelled them 'undereducated twats' doesn't realise this just shows how ignorant they are.

I’ll probably be flamed. DH is from the North East. He’s lived down South for the last 25 years.

We live near Brighton in the area where I grew up. I was astounded and completely taken aback with SIL and her ex/husbands attitude towards LGBT. It was like hearing an echo from 100 years before. SIL told me not to talk about a LGBT family (my family) wedding in front of her 10 year old as she didn’t want her hearing about it as she’s not told her about things “like that.”My 5 year old was just like oh yeah Aunty T and Aunty S are getting married.

I think in some parts they are very traditional and it’s handed down from generation to generation and they’re not very open minded about things.

I don’t see any need for you to ‘be flamed’ but it’s probably worth pointing out that just because your SIL lives in the north east and is homophobic, that really doesn’t mean everyone in the north east is homophobic!

trust me…I would know!

No mental health services are spread too thin because there are more people mentally ill, and the middle classes are using services for relatively minor mental health issues.

Mental health services are spread very thinly indeed. It has been said that the young man who killed those children and attempted to kill 8 more is suffering from ADHD.

I never condone violence. I wonder why a youth of 17 could do such a thing,

In the news this year mothers have been raging against the lack of medication available for their dc suffering from this terrible disease. Why were the manufacturers not making more drugs? Why were the chemist not receiving enough medication? All the year there have been complaints about the lack of mental health care, and particularly facilities for treating ADHD.

I wonder if the 17 year old was receiving adequate care. If he was not, how many more cases will come in the future? The responsibility is not all his, if he is suffering from a mental illness. It is incumbent on all of us to ensure people receive good health treatment, but that is not where the pensioners' winter fuel payment is going, is it.

Has anyone asked if the youth is receiving proper evaluation and medical care in prison?

yup can’t find a decent tradesmen cos the idiots voted to leave the EU and stem the flow of polish plumbers and builders that were nicking their jobs. So skilled they may be but politically informed not so much. Appreciate that’s a massive generalisation but not so far from the truth.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 19:10

@Scarfitwere I actually agree with that too.you don't tend to get it so much with black communities- it's not all Asian communities- just some.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2024 19:11

@Leniriefenstahl nail on head!

BlackForestCake · 04/08/2024 19:11

Typically racism is more overt in places where there are just enough black and brown people to be noticeable.

If there are hardly any ethnic minorities somewhere, the racism might be latent, but it doesn't break out, because there's no target. This is why there aren't riots in Scotland. It's not because Scots are above that sort of thing, like certain Scottish nationalists make out. It's because Scotland is almost entirely white except for a few pockets in the big cities.

London is the opposite. There, most white peope know some black and brown people personally and realise that they're alright. So again there's less racism there.

‘Pretended to do something’ 😂. So they lied but that’s ok ?
The tories have never been a friend of working class northern folk. They decimated many a proud northern town with their defunct Neo liberal policies. They implemented Brexshit for a start which has done nothing but damage working class opportunities and aspirations. Give it a rest.
And fwiw most white van men have never voted Labour. Half of them fiddle their tax and don’t pay their dues, very much tories.

How do you know half white van men fiddle their taxes? Much of what you said has no basis in fact and you could not evidence if challenged.

Yes, Yeezys. I have a few pair actually. Also, the majority of his people, I.e Black people, still call him Kanye. Him changing it to Ye means nothing to the culture.

Furthermore, this is Mumsnet…wasn’t sure they would understand ‘yeezys’ without putting his full name.

I think if you are going mention someone by name I always thinks it’s polite to refer to them as they want to be known, but that’s just me. Which is why I mentioned he goes by Ye.

I don’t particularly like some Yeezys (the 350 mainly) however I have a pair of slides and they are SO comfortable, like clouds on my feet!

So what if they don't want to mix??? Why can't different communities co-exist in peace? Look at the state of this lot; would you want to ‘mix’? It is okay for people to a live a different way of life if they do choose so. I mean what can they have in common? One is a culture of pubs, football and union flags and the other one is prayer five times a day and no alcohol. Mixing is being able to respect each other in the community. They don't have to be friends.

Where have I blamed Reform? my comment was about Farage, I know he is the leader but I didn't mention the party he is currently in charge of. In fact I rarely think of him within the context of Reform as I think he just sees his limited company (£25 membership with no voting rights for those who sign uo) as a stepping stone to joining the Tories. Where can I read or view his statement condemning the riots?

It’s on TikTok. It’s amazing how much diverse information you can get from it.
If you’re having a pop at Farage, you are having a pop at his voters and supporters

This is clearly fake.

I was walking through Leeds yesterday and literally the only thing on offer was sweetcorn served out of a cart outside Harvey Nicks.

I don’t know why you are so offended - clearly you can buy Avocado on toast anywhere really now. One shop is not an emblem of a well off and well integrated society which many people like in London won’t ever be able to afford! I wasn’t suggesting London is to be envied as like you or another poster (can’t remember sorry) pointed out, it’s not economically that diverse anymore you got very rich people and poorer pockets and not loads In between. I don’t like the way London has been Disneyfied now, there are almost 90000 Air BNBs for example, many properties that were just normal London family areas when I was growing up have been bought up as foreign investments.

Agreed but even JSO and the crowd that pulled the statue of the slave trader down in Bristol didn’t resort to setting buildings and police vehicles on fire and yet right wingers were so incensed about the god damned wokery and calling for them to be harshly punished. Racist thugs attacking the police and private property, a different matter deserving of attention.
