Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

But also ditto those factors in London. Unless Londoners are less racist/better at living together? Not so much obvious division as somewhere like Rochdale, Rotherham etc where there may be 2 distinct cultures geographically side by side but maybe not mixing so much?

There is access to more free stuff and help in London. Simple things like being able to get free transport for kids makes a difference.

41% of children in Middlesbrough live in poverty

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/24066572.middlesbrough-worst-north-east-child-poverty/.

Middlesbrough houses up to ten times as many migrants as areas in the south.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/teesside-north-east-region-takes-26551433.amp.

I am not saying there is necessarily a link, it's a combination of many factors. Northern towns have been ignored by the government, underfunded, and people are angry. It's just being directed in an awful way.

Figures show North East area ranks as country's second worst for child poverty

A report into child poverty by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has identified Middlesbrough as the worst affected area in the North East.

Just like Liverpool did they will send them packing rather quickly...

Not always. It kicked off badly in various areas of Liverpool yesterday.

Probably because Southport isn’t too far from Liverpool

Scotland doesn't have a similar demographic. Many of these areas have ethnically diverse populations, Scotland is not very ethnically diverse, about 90% white

Scotland also provides more support to struggling people. Everything from the baby boxes to higher welfare benefits.

Not wishing to derail the thread, but my god, I remember hot desking in the recruitment department once, and hearing colleagues take the piss out of an applicant. When one of them commented that applicant had been to a private school in Yorkshire, another replied "not a very good private school, then." It still boils my piss nearly twenty years later (I can't believe I kept my mouth shut to be honest).

This would really get my back up. I cannot stand arrogance and judgement of people you know nothing about, especially when it’s treating people as lesser because of any personal characteristics.

I form opinions on people once I know them. My view: if you’re a twat you’re a twat. No matter where you come from.

Disagree. Mostly Hindus and Sikhs and I have had good friends there in the past from the Indian community. Not saying all Muslims = bad, but places like Rotherham have had trouble because of cultural attitudes of Pakistani men to white girls. I'm not sweeping that under the carpet & it is well known - same in Telford and areas around.

I don't know if it is religion or culture or both, or just bad men (I am sure not all are the same) but I could understand tensions there after what has happened.

No excuse for the rent a mob, just plain nasty. You don't sort the problem out like that. These men are likely 2nd generation, can't be removed from UK they were born here and have same rights and responsibilities as we all do. Glad to see quite a few gangs locked up in recent years.

Really?? I'm in the NW and know plenty who wouldn't entertain the idea of indulging in such violent protests. Neither are they racist.

I’m in Scotland, and although we have a similar demographic to the north of England, we don’t seem to be seeing the same issues with riots at the moment.

is Scotland just a bit more left wing? A bit more tolerant? Or just a bit colder?

We make a bit of light of the weather putting rioters off here but I do believe with it bucketing in Glasgow right now it really will stop so many

How would you like for asylum seekers to pay their own bills and housing when they’re not allowed to work or claim benefits?

They get NASS support in addition to accommodation and to be honest, no one who is already living in poverty really gives a toss.
No one gave a toss about them until they started complaining about their living conditions.
Putting the welfare of immigrants above the welfare of your own citizens will always end in unrest.

Our town was one of the few to participate in the Gateway scheme. Essentially it received extra cash to house asylum seekers. Not sure it’s still a thing but certainly will have created historic resentment. Equally accommodating large numbers of Roma gypsies who have caused quite a lot of social issues in certain already deprived parts of town inflamed tensions prior to the Brexit vote.

SallyWD · 04/08/2024 17:29

I see they're planning more in the south - Brighton next week I think. There have been plenty of riots in London.

EDL are defunct so which marches are you referring to?

Such a big difference. The Tommy Robinson Appreciation Society then

thefireplace · 04/08/2024 17:29

What shocks me in my quite affluent SW town, is the numbers of people who whilst condemning the violence towards the Police etc, then say "Well, you can see what they are protesting against..."

AdviceNeeded2024 · 04/08/2024 17:29

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel Good on your daughters and shame on those other kids. You must be so proud of them standing up for themselves.

Thing is, much like the thugs in these riots have been indoctrinated into their warped views likely by family. Those kids are the same. Taught to treat anyone who is viewed as lesser by them with utter contempt.

It all needs to stop, all of it. Racism, sexism, hatred in all forms. Classism is a growing issue as well and needs addressing.

Agree - from a v similar background myself.
I’m from a Northern city and no way will I be returning - except under duress.
Poverty and lack of opportunity has a part to play for sure - as does an appalling lack of housing but so does narrow mindedness, ignorance, drugs, drink and low IQ.
In many cases people don’t want the opportunities-, they wont work in school and disrupt it for others or are awful to those that want to make something of themselves.

The irony you sound quite ignorant about the "North " yourself.

Lavenderflower · 04/08/2024 17:36

I assume it was down to a lack of education and deprivation. That being said, despite London being a relatively wealthy area it also has one of the highest rates of poverty in the country.

This is very random, I did see a random tik tock video on my new feed of astrologer predicating there will be riots and racial dissent.
