Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

This is an interesting thread and I have read most of it. I totally condemn the riots and protests and was horrified by it.
But I do kind of understand how some people feel. Life is hard. I see poverty all around me. I personally have jumped from one insecure job to another as has my DH, we do not have any security. At the same time the money our council gets has been decimated, so all the free family things we used to go to have been decimated. The few things left do tend to be aimed at specific communities, rather than just people struggling. That does breed resentment and jealousy.
I also think the laughing at poor people is not okay and makes this worse. I heard someone today laughing that most of the people in the riots had 3 teeth between them. Lack of teeth is about poverty, it is not a reason to take the piss out of someone.
I hope these riots quickly end. But we do need a better society. We need better workers rights so that those on lower paid jobs are not continually treated like shit. We need better dentistry and healthcare. We need better housing and better tenants rights.

@Hoppinggreen

Proper Northerners don't use butchers, most go out poaching in the Dales and the rest just eat roadkill. They all have Greggs on Sundays.

At least that's what everyone in Roundhay does. They're all buying Teslas because it's easier to hit animals in an electric car.

I was helping a client from overseas find a property in Chapel Allerton last week.
Couldn't move for bloody Teslas and fancy cheese shops and chi chi cafes. I am pretty sure you get get non instant coffee too.
I relocate people from all over the world, usually HNWI and sometimes VIP's too and they think Leeds is great. I am very lucky because I get to see it through fresh eyes all the time.
Is is utopia? no
Is there a lack of coffee and nothing but good butchers and burger restaurants? Also no

Poverty, and lots of diversity in northern towns so more opportunity for racism to be rife.

But also ditto those factors in London. Unless Londoners are less racist/better at living together? Not so much obvious division as somewhere like Rochdale, Rotherham etc where there may be 2 distinct cultures geographically side by side but maybe not mixing so much?

AdviceNeeded2024 · 04/08/2024 16:58

@volingaround Exactly the same for me. Went to work meeting with London colleagues in my organisation, we went out to eat in the evening and they took the piss out of and mimicked my accent all night, in a very unfriendly way, and suggested I was uneducated and thick. And I have quite a flat, less distinct accent than some places. Behaviour was disgusting and I’d never met these people before in my life.

Several of dd’s brightest friends decided they weren’t interested in applying to Oxbridge because they had had too much experience of posh southern kids taking the piss out of their accents. Not suggesting this kind of thing is much of a factor in the riots but nevertheless I do find it quite mind boggling that this sort of behaviour is accepted in this day and age and especially among the #bekind youth and it does say something about the level of alienation felt in the north from London and the south east. (They took their 3 A stars to Leeds and York unis instead.)

On another note, a friend’s dh who is a London banker listened to dh giving some figures about the low levels of government spending in the north and said, ‘It serves them right for voting for Brexit.’
I haven’t seen him in the same way since.

LBC were talking about what Labour have planned re. tenants rights at 1pm today

If so many of these immigrants are so industrious and honest why don't they sort out their own countries rather than trash ours.
Yes I know it will be tough but we had to have revolutions before we got a fair deal. Civil Wars, the French had to sort Napoleon (with help)> How many did the allies lose in WW2 and WW2, then Korea to keep the Chinese back in China.
It wasn't free it cost money effort and blood.

wutheringkites · 04/08/2024 17:18

@Hoppinggreen

They might be HNWI and VIPs but have they grown up in the right part of North London? If not, they probably don't know anything about food.

😂Ohh the outrage this will cause.

My gran was from Didsbury before it got posh. Can't buy an ex council house there now for anything but eye watering prices.

Which immigrants have been trashing anywhere in the last week?

Justleaveitblankthen · 04/08/2024 17:18

We are very close to Southport and thank goodness nothing is happening here.

It's appalling.

I just wish London could devolve from the rest of the country….leave them to it. We’ll take some nice cities as friends perhaps like Bristol and Glasgow

How would you like for asylum seekers to pay their own bills and housing when they’re not allowed to work or claim benefits?

How would you like for asylum seekers to pay their own bills and housing when they’re not allowed to work or claim benefits?

I'm not suggesting that they should. I'm saying though that I understand why it angers people. The government (and perhaps the new one will) needs to look at the horribly backward system for processing claims, with all the resulting expense, so that those who have no right to be here don't stay, and those who do can work or claim benefits.

Neither the asylum seekers/refugees or the angry disaffected young men are responsible for the situation that exists.

Poverty and a feeling of being ignored by Government.

100% this and being treated differently by the Police.

Agree. I live in one of the poorer parts of greater Manchester and visited Altrincham on the tram. Was surprised at how ‘white’ the centre was and how affluent folk looked, hardly any boarded up shops or homeless whereas the town I live in no more than 15 - 20 miles away is a different world.

Fortunately for me they are all from Forrin so I don't have to deal with people from London who think everywhere else is a wasteland.

Where?

PocketSand · 04/08/2024 17:22

Careful - by excusing men's anger against those they have been encouraged to blame you are bringing innocent women into the frame. Given we don't know whether the girls in Southport were targeted because they were female or white or because of mental illness you are treading on fine ground.

There have been other attacks where being female appears to have been part of the motivation however warped.

The rise in misogyny and racial hated seems to go hand in hand with right wing ideology. Both are claimed as power being removed by woke liberals. To which we can add LBT and, somewhat strangely, climate change.

None of it stands up to logical argument but fuels an immediate riot when stoked.

I’m in Scotland, and although we have a similar demographic to the north of England, we don’t seem to be seeing the same issues with riots at the moment.

is Scotland just a bit more left wing? A bit more tolerant? Or just a bit colder?

Scotland doesn't have a similar demographic. Many of these areas have ethnically diverse populations, Scotland is not very ethnically diverse, about 90% white
