Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

I’m just repeating what I was told about Leeds now. It depends what you see as ‘good food’. Lots of gods butchers in the North and appears to be lots more meat consumed so good quality but the variety is what they said is lacking.

So you are a Londoner or did you move from London and had lived somewhere before? London is massive so you could come from or have grown up in a part that was lacking in diversity. This person is from a part of North London and just are used to more variety.

So what about YOU? When was the last time YOU went to Leeds. Not your colleague.

I think Leeds would like you to visit. I'm sure MN can give you some recommendations to try out.

I know a LOT of people who moved up from London to the North West. I live in a hotspot for it. They don't miss London. London is nice for a visit, but hell no thanks.

You haven't a clue.

I am not so sure Leeds does to be honest

RedToothBrush · 04/08/2024 17:06

The chances of civil unrest rises significantly when the unemployment rate in men under 30 goes above 20%

It doesn't matter where in the world or what the political system is.

The same is true across the world and throughout history.

QueenofFox · 04/08/2024 17:07

People saying that the 2011 riots were in London - those riots were largely made up of POC, disenfranchised black men and started out due to police brutality, which is a really different demographic to these riots, and I think why there is less southern riots - I've only heard of Southend, a very white town. I can only speak for London, which is historically hugely labour rather than something like reform. I don't think reform supporters cause the riots but the root causes - poverty, segregation, inter generation trauma from substance abuse has lead people to end up voting or fighting with the far right - and reform is a far right political party.

There are Jewish people that also support Palestine and are against the genocide that is happening and tge longstanding occupation. Some Jews have walked in solidarity with Pslestinians on these peaceful protests.

Very few. There is open anti jewish sentiment at too many palestinian protests.

Fair enough😏

@Hoppinggreen

Proper Northerners don't use butchers, most go out poaching in the Dales and the rest just eat roadkill. They all have Greggs on Sundays.

At least that's what everyone in Roundhay does. They're all buying Teslas because it's easier to hit animals in an electric car.

Farage has been silent the whole weekend, wonder if he is glorying in this and planning his next move. Personally I think that parliament needs to be recalled and he is asked some very tough questions. Doubt he will turn up if this happens. He will just do one of his propaganda videos

He hasn’t though, he has spoken to condemn the violence but you carry on blaming Reform for this 🤷‍♀️

Cabincrew1 · 04/08/2024 17:09

The government treats the north like they are so far removed from the south so there’s a lot of poverty and deprivation.

Also the incident on Monday happened in a northern town.

Re. social housing. Ive seen social housing tenants being told on here that social housing is "free" by middle class MNers

Well the racists have taken that and run with it and are castigating immigrants for getting "free" social housing. Then the middle classes all of a sudden say its not "free"

So which is it

LochKatrine · 04/08/2024 17:10

Attacking the Holiday Inn in Rotherham, where asylum seekers are lodged - they must have been absolutely terrified.

OhMaria2 · 04/08/2024 17:10

Fluufer · 04/08/2024 16:46

What is stopping white working class men from accessing education? Not everything is someone else's fault.

Edited

you lot buying all the housing in the good catchment areas

volingaround · 04/08/2024 17:10

AdviceNeeded2024 · 04/08/2024 16:58

@volingaround Exactly the same for me. Went to work meeting with London colleagues in my organisation, we went out to eat in the evening and they took the piss out of and mimicked my accent all night, in a very unfriendly way, and suggested I was uneducated and thick. And I have quite a flat, less distinct accent than some places. Behaviour was disgusting and I’d never met these people before in my life.

Not wishing to derail the thread, but my god, I remember hot desking in the recruitment department once, and hearing colleagues take the piss out of an applicant. When one of them commented that applicant had been to a private school in Yorkshire, another replied "not a very good private school, then." It still boils my piss nearly twenty years later (I can't believe I kept my mouth shut to be honest).

When you live in some of the most deprived areas in the country, where the heavy industries that were the backbone of those areas have gone with nothing to replace them, when the shops are boarded up, I do understand that it must be difficult to be living in poverty and hearing about the millions being spent every day to house refugees and asylum seekers.

My neighbour (we live in one of those deprived areas) has several houses he lets out. They're done to a very high standard, I've seen them and he is no rogue landlord. He is contracted with the Home Office to make some of them available to to the refugees and asylum seekers. They pay nothing. The government covers it all. No rent, no council tax, and no utilities. The latter is significant - while pensioners shiver in the winter, these people have the heating on 24/7 (and even in the summer). That's got to sting.

If the properties are damaged, often deliberately as a protest that the Home Office isn't processing their claim fast enough (so nothing to do with my neighbour), the HO picks up the bill.

Rioting isn't the answer. I cannot see how they think setting fire to a library or a police station helps their cause. But I understand some of their anger.

My neighbour thought he was doing a good thing providing these homes. Now he would like to get out.

How would you like for asylum seekers to pay their own bills and housing when they’re not allowed to work or claim benefits?

One of DH's university friends who lived in Tunbridge Wells and went to private school, refused to ever visit us 'even if you lived on a secure gated estate'.

He was being deadly serious.

I live in a nice part of the NW.

And yet the right wingers who will lament the lot of the white working class boy will laugh in your face if you argue that, say, black Americans are on average poorer due to institutionalised racism. The cognitive dissonance of parts of the right never ceases to amaze me.

runningpram · 04/08/2024 17:13

Agree - from a v similar background myself.
I’m from a Northern city and no way will I be returning - except under duress.
Poverty and lack of opportunity has a part to play for sure - as does an appalling lack of housing but so does narrow mindedness, ignorance, drugs, drink and low IQ.
In many cases people don’t want the opportunities-, they wont work in school and disrupt it for others or are awful to those that want to make something of themselves.

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 17:13

Lies about levelling up, even the fact that we need to be levelled up in the first place.
Years of underinvestment and austerity which hit parts of the north harder (not Rishi’s affluent constituency by the way 😂).
Some of the worst schools and teachers who aren’t as good as they could be in helping to raise aspirations. Multi generational poverty and reliance on benefits. Many want to work btw but competition for even NMW jobs is fierce and often up against migrants.
Absolutely shite job prospects even with a decent degree.
Some towns have seen huge demographic changes in populations as migrants and asylum seekers head to cheaper areas. This breeds resentment.
If southerners move here it’s not to places like Rochdale, Oldham or Burnley is it ?
