Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

There are more large cities in the north. However london and bristol have experienced some rioting

TokyoSushi · 04/08/2024 12:16

Poverty, and lots of diversity in northern towns so more opportunity for racism to be rife.

x2boys · 04/08/2024 12:17

Well Southport is in the Northwest so..
London has experienced its fair share of riots across the years.

Littletreefrog · 04/08/2024 12:18

Poverty and a feeling of being ignored by Government.

RedToothBrush · 04/08/2024 12:19

Poverty and areas being particularly deprived of opportunity and investment.

It's particularly true of former mining and fishing communities where the main employment opportunities have been completely destroyed.

It's men without any prospects and multiple governments have never addressed what this has bred - criminality. Racist politicians have exploited this too.

This.

Startingagainandagain · 04/08/2024 12:24

I assume they targeted these places hoping to use poverty and lack of opportunities to push their scapegoating of immigrants...

London and the South are used to having a multicultural society. So yes, there were protests in London but they did not really catch on as in most London boroughs the far right will quickly find out that there are not welcome.

Same if they try to do this in Glasgow. Just like Liverpool did they will send them packing rather quickly...

Despair and a lack of control of their environment. A feeling that they have not been heard

Many area in the North are also used to being multicultural .

Fullyflavoured · 04/08/2024 12:26

More likely to have bigger Muslin communities, so the racists target those areas.

RainyWoodland · 04/08/2024 12:27

The Tottenham riots started in Tottenham. The statue toppling was in the south.

From what I’ve heard, this current unrest seems to be in the North West - people who possibly have been to Southport at some point for a holiday?

gotmychristmasmiracle · 04/08/2024 12:28

Would imagine a lot of the refugees are housed up north, so they may see a lot more of what is going on and fundamentally just not feeling heard by the government.

Sarahconnor1 · 04/08/2024 12:30

Just like Liverpool did they will send them packing rather quickly...

Not always. It kicked off badly in various areas of Liverpool yesterday.

You might need to revisit your North of England geography.

QueenAstrid · 04/08/2024 12:36

I’m in a culturally diverse, inclusive Northern city and joined the counter protest this morning. I have no idea why the far right chose this city to stage a ‘protest’ but I felt so proud of how we showed them they are unwelcome here.

chaosmaker · 04/08/2024 12:37

Believing the reform 'party' probably and their racist nonsense

chaosmaker · 04/08/2024 12:37

also blame and othering don't know why it's worse in the north

Poverty and a feeling of being ignored by Government.

Yup. But also in many cases it's not just a feeling unfortunately.

Yes, but a lot of the different cultures havn't integrated as well as in London and the SE probably because there is less opportunity and more poverty in the North.

And this is exactly why they are rioting, because of comments like yours.

People are as entitled to vote Reform as you are to vote for whoever you voted for.

Mousefoot · 04/08/2024 12:48

Places with a working class poor, where whole towns were originally built up around industries that no longer exisit, towns with large immigrant populations which often haven't integrated and places where the grooming gangs operate (not entirely related, but all contributes to the feeling of unease)
