Why is it a particular type of, usually men, who are normally the instigators of civil unrest?

It can’t be that they’re all just disillusioned or angry or even just thick. It largely seems to be working class men (and yes some women). When I passed the Tommy Robinson March last week when I was in London, it was a very similar demographic although I must admit it looked mainly quite calm.

I feel angry for the families of those poor girls, it’s beyond dreadful what happened to them but the rioters must know that they’re not helping them at all (or themselves).

So is it just racism? I saw some of the videos on X last night of black men and Muslims being singled out and attacked and can’t really think it’s down to anything else. The footage was shocking.

The mob outside the police station in Manchester appeared to be all Muslim men after the airport footage of the fight and police being beaten up. The weekly appalling scenes in London seems to be a mixed bag of people just united by antisemitism. The riots in leeds were Muslim and Hindu men. The leeds riots that the police ran away from seemed to be mixed non white people in that area. Civil unrest and riots seem to be mainly men. In terms of race the UK is about 20% non white. Recent riots have been about 50% non white so on that basis and i am generalising it would seem from what is being reported that non white men are doing most of the rioting overall. It would be interesting to see the statistics.

Its the imbalance with which these people are treated that is a major part of the problem!

This sort of sneering attitude is what people are sick of op! Yes their are thugs taking advantage of this situation to further their racist beliefs but the vast majority are not racist not thugs they are simply sick of their views being ignored and dismissed! The Tommy robinson march was absolutely not mainly working class men in their 30's, there were lots of older women and men, plus families! Keep on dismissing them as racists and this will get worse until people like yourselves and the government are forced to listen.

I didn't and actually said when I saw the Tommy Robinson march it appeared largely calm. Although if you don't think he and his ilk are part of the problem you're being very naïve.

@CountFucula typical of people like you, when you can't silence someone by accusing them of racism you silence them in other ways! You are simply proving me right!

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 04/08/2024 11:19

It used to be possible to earn good money in unionised manual labour. Dock workers, miners, steel workers etc.

The economy has changed and they've been left behind.

today's 30 year olds were brought up by fathers who bore the brunt of this in the '80s as industry died and well paid low skilled jobs disappeared / were destroyed. Communities were wrecked and poverty hit areas that had been ok.

Immigrants have always been a scapegoat for the working class when things get tough. It's better for the rich if those with the least turn on each other instead of railing at the inequality that is the real cause of their problems

Well you think others will be forced to listen.

Or people causing civil unrest will all just quietly get herded up and locked away.

The phrase ‘fuck around and find out’ springs to mind.

spikeandbuffy · 04/08/2024 11:20

I actually found out one of my neighbours was racist recently (or dim, or both)

She was whinging about a new family that have moved in and how we are paying for them "off the boats" and they're taking over
I spoke to the new family, they were homeless, they're British, moved from fairly local and very happy to be out of a b&b
She then eye rolled hearing another neighbour speak a different language. They're local, born here, and both work at the local hospital

Prawncow · 04/08/2024 11:20

They can't get women (incels)

They can’t get the women they want while having contempt for women as a class. I honestly think it’s a side effect of growing up on porn. They feel entitled to thin, young, beautiful woman to use as a real life sex doll who will have no emotional needs or expectations of them.

The thing is, when you genuinely feel like you've got nothing to lose, you're not going to give two shits about having a criminal record.

I agree, but it will still be someone else's fault.

lovelysunshine22 · 04/08/2024 11:23

@alwaysmovingforwards that actually made me laugh! Are you for real? " fuck around and find out?" Do you actually think they will lock up vast swathes of working class people when our prisons are full already? Do you not think that if the government try to do that they will cause even more rioting? Also from vast experience of working with the police id say that many of these officers actually agree with them!

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 11:24

With any mass event there will be those who drink too much or have anger issues or too much testosterone or just plain bad people, and it is a real shame as they are discrediting the protesters.

The protests were of course triggered by a cluster of activities over recent days - rioting over child protection, beating up policewomen, killing infants, waving swords, but the root cause is much deeper.

Whether you think they are morally right or wrong to not want to live within foreign cultures and share resources accordingly, in a democracy the majority is supposed to get their way. Democracy has been ignored on this issue for decades but especially the last 3 years when enough people came to suck up all the new housing capacity that labour have pledged to build over the next 5 years.

There needs to be honesty. Most immigration is legal. Either people whose skills we need (and haven’t bothered to train up our own) or students that our unis depend on to survive. The number of illegal boat people is minimal in the greater scheme of things.
Fwiw much of the anger in WC towns is because many of the more noticeable immigrants (asylum seekers etc) are deposited in cheaper areas. Walk through my town centre and the demographic has changed hugely over the last 10 years, Somalians, Nigerians, Afghanis, many of the women in Conservative dress. Head to more affluent ones and the difference is striking.

Dh grew up in a mining town. He and his dad and all his brothers lost their jobs in the 80’s.

They all have degrees and PhD’s now. As do all their children. They didn’t all get left behind.

If you watched the recent programmes
om the miners strikes, the ex miners speaking were articulate and genuine men.

Its nothing to do with being ‘left behind’ Reform didn’t gain seats in these areas. Its to do with being a racist twat.

Id put them all on the Bibby Stockholm for a year and launch it somewhere.

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 11:16

@sunsetsandboardwalks You need to live in areas where it’s rife. I live in a northern town that’s on its arse. Austerity, lack of investment, half the town full of boarded up shops, hundreds of applicants for essentially NMW jobs. Desperation, anger, frustration, jealousy. The signs of poverty are pretty obvious tbh.

It's not going to register with the middle class high salaried mumsnetter.

ScaryPrairie · 04/08/2024 11:27

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow It’s not school refusal in isolation. It’s that alongside a whole other host of risk factors.

This data exists - we don’t need to surmise; we know. Everyone who works with demographics knows about this this population cluster.

It’s just very profitable for alcohol, tobacco and gambling companies who commission the data - and the governments who benefit from their tax take - to not draw too much attention to the sheer numbers of men in this cluster.

Also for the vast majority I've spoken to it's absolutely nothing to do with colour but everything to do with integration. Having close friends that work for Border force ( who are all pakistani and Indian born btw) i can tell you that even they believe that 90% of these " refugees" are economic migrants not refugees but how does the home office disprove the stories they are telling?

What makes up a ‘British’ household?

Your posts so far have been a beautiful example of the dog whistle correlations and facts that Farage and his ashtray mouths use.

Apologies. That’s a predictive text error. It should have said non-white British.

it’s not dog whistle at all. It’s arrogant to fail to see immigration is a problem for many people, just because it isn’t a problem for you. It isn’t a problem for professional me either, with my comfy income with private healthcare including dentistry, in my privately-owned house, near outstanding schools. The people protesting have a different sort of life and they are in competition for resources like local-authority housing.

And it’s like protest is only allowed by the middle classes when they are marching against Brexit or some other cause that’s approved by the patronising middle classes.

And just so you know, I voted remain, I’m not white British, I’m a first generation Brit and an ethnic minority. I grew up in a council house and spent some of my childhood in care. I was lucky to be reasonably brainy, not through anything I did, just luck.

I dunno.
Do you think that raising the pitchforks is going to storm the bastille?
Do you think policy change is going to happen because a little group somewhere miles away are smashing up their own town miles away?
Do you not think if civil unrest reached a high enough level the military wouldn’t swoop in and rather quickly and easily round everyone up?

Seriously, I’m not arguing with you, I genuinely don’t know which way it would go.
So yeah, I stand by if a certain group feel strongly enough, then go fuck around and find out.

Everyone was very upset that Tories wanted to restrict the ‘right’ to disruptive protests, but now they’re all for it.

I mean watching those videos I can’t think it is down to anything else that racism and mostly Islamophobia. It’s awful.

Of course,- they're neo Nazis ( I saw a picture of one doing a salute in a police man's face,). Utterly racist, disgusting people. They feel comfortable being racist due to the racist policies of the previous government, UK press like The Daily Mail.
The police need some water cannons, rubber bullets etc. I feel sorry for the police and anyone impacted by the hooligans.

Well maybe if there wasn't so much hostility towards immigrants and they were made to feel a bit more welcome they might feel more comfortable moving outside their siloed groups to establish better connections with the community they live in. And after this week they will have even less wherewithal to "integrate". You have absolutely no right to be angry at people for not integrating if you make it obvious you don't want them in your community.

Economic migrants can still claim asylum.

What they shouldn't be doing is paying criminals to cross the channel and they shouldn't be allowed to stay here. Obtain a visa and come here lawfully.
