Why is it a particular type of, usually men, who are normally the instigators of civil unrest?

It can’t be that they’re all just disillusioned or angry or even just thick. It largely seems to be working class men (and yes some women). When I passed the Tommy Robinson March last week when I was in London, it was a very similar demographic although I must admit it looked mainly quite calm.

I feel angry for the families of those poor girls, it’s beyond dreadful what happened to them but the rioters must know that they’re not helping them at all (or themselves).

So is it just racism? I saw some of the videos on X last night of black men and Muslims being singled out and attacked and can’t really think it’s down to anything else. The footage was shocking.

The thing is, when you genuinely feel like you've got nothing to lose, you're not going to give two shits about having a criminal record.

Most of them don’t look socially disadvantaged.

Where is your evidence for this? It’s my understanding that domestic abuse is much more likely in non-note British households.

As evidenced by this 2024 document from U.K. Parliament that discusses the problem of female homicides in ethnic minority women being massively over-represented.

I don’t think I said that there was any distinction between ethnicity on domestic violence. That is something that cuts across all races.

Luminousalumnus · 04/08/2024 10:49

Of course this is exactly right.
If everyone was invested in society and felt useful and valued there would be no riots.

Again, these guys are probably doing ok. With jobs, a home, internet. Don’t paint them as victims. I agree that white working class boys have been let down massively but most of these guys look like Gen X who’ve done very well.

What does a socially disadvantaged person look like? Confused

PickAChew · 04/08/2024 11:01

White working class riots are not a new thing at all. The Meadowell riots in the early 90s were in a very white working class area.

BippityBopper · 04/08/2024 11:02

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 10:49

Yes I agree @Rainbowsponge I can't stand the type of mc women you get on these threads. This is the first time I've seen wwc men rioting, it's usually ethnic minority (or Roma a few weeks ago) men which they either ignore or sympathise with so they couldn't give a shit about the misery these disturbances create its all about them. So the op is talking bollocks.

So you've never seen riots after certain football matches? Seriously?

ScaryPrairie · 04/08/2024 11:02

Too outing to disclose details, but I have had exposure to a lot of data analytics about this type of man (it is almost always men; the vanishingly few women are psychologically in thrall to a man).

Low intellectual ability and poor educational attainment.
School refusal from year 7 or even before.
Poor parenting and generational trauma.
Family background is financially precarious - but the welfare state and/or a manual trade and particularly the purchase of a council house by their parents or grandparents has enriched them enough to give them some agency and affluence, but also a lot of envy and resentment about those who have accelerated progress - eg immigrants.
Cash in hand work or grey economy.
Very high incidence of alcohol, cigarette/ vape, recreational drugs, online gambling usage.
Very high likelihood of living with parents into late adulthood.

In short: not intelligent, badly parented, bored, cash-rich men with a lot of sadness and anger finding its outlet in violence and destruction.

They have been emboldened and exploited by shameless narcissistic charlatans in politics and the media, but they have always been with us and exist in many countries.

Prawncow · 04/08/2024 11:04

It’s football hooliganism. Angry, white men. It’s not a new phenomenon and it never really had anything to do with the football - that just provided a convenient fixture list of violence.

PickAChew · 04/08/2024 11:01

That was 30 years ago. The poster implied all riots are wwc men which was clearly bollocks. And yes they are likely to be Gen X. I am Gen X and have seen our country deteriorate in the last 20 years from the racially harmonious time in the 90s when there was plenty of housing and good public services. So I am also angry as anyone of my generation should be mainly with govts since Tony Blair who have wrecked the country (although obv wouldn't riot about it).

What makes up a ‘British’ household?

Your posts so far have been a beautiful example of the dog whistle correlations and facts that Farage and his ashtray mouths use.

Luminousalumnus · 04/08/2024 11:06

The common denominator is that they are disadvantaged men, disadvantaged because they are poor and unintelligent. Neither of which they have much control over. They are ripe for the picking if anyone wants to utilise them to cause chaos.
They are not all white. But saying they are is adding to the fire. The riot in Southend last week (not Southport yes really Southend) was black with a smattering of Arab. Google it. It was fucking horrendous yet it has not been condemned by Starmer. Not a word. And that's why people are referring to him as two tier Keir. Different approaches to different groups. Only eight arrested in Southend out of around 2000 who descended on the town, some of whom were attacking people with machetes.
This infuriates law abiding people. And yes drives people into the arms of TR

Hatfullofwillow · 04/08/2024 11:07

There are plenty of women involved with the far right in the UK; actively stirring up division online, providing logistical support, recruiting, fundraising etc.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 04/08/2024 11:10

I'd guess the decrease in football hooliganism has something to do with it as well. There has always been a particular group of males in society that feel the need to get pissed/drugged in and get violent - they can't do it about football anymore so they do it about other things

HideousKinky · 04/08/2024 11:11

ByCupidStunt · 04/08/2024 09:02

I agree with you it's mainly working class males in their 30's.

Wanted to add a fun fact -

Did you know that "Tommy Robinson" isn't his name? It's a stage name! Get that! Even civil disrupters have stage names, who'd have thought.

That's correct - his name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon but a double-barrelled surname won't strike the right note with the demographic he wants to appeal to

User135644 · 04/08/2024 11:11

They can't get women (incels), can't get a good paid job/no skills and can't get on the housing ladder. They're lost with nothing to lose.

Not that all these apply to all of them but it'll be at least 1 or 2 of these.

Too many single men in society is a dangerous thing.

School refusal is often linked to SEND though.

The majority of school refusers are not like this. ( 25 years a teacher)

coworkingdesk · 04/08/2024 11:14

The Roma riots were an exception rather than the rule though (someone referred to them upthread). Also seem to target the police rather than individuals based purely on colour / religion which these seem to be. I'm not saying any rioting is good, far from it but these that are happening the last week seem to have been very racially motivated.

Also, I grew up in a very working class area, my dad is still in social housing (that isn't meant to be a weird flex about knowing working class people btw which I'm sure some will interpret it to be).

This sort of sneering attitude is what people are sick of op! Yes their are thugs taking advantage of this situation to further their racist beliefs but the vast majority are not racist not thugs they are simply sick of their views being ignored and dismissed! The Tommy robinson march was absolutely not mainly working class men in their 30's, there were lots of older women and men, plus families! Keep on dismissing them as racists and this will get worse until people like yourselves and the government are forced to listen.

SunnyDaySummer · 04/08/2024 11:15

With any mass event there will be those who drink too much or have anger issues or too much testosterone or just plain bad people, and it is a real shame as they are discrediting the protesters.

The protests were of course triggered by a cluster of activities over recent days - rioting over child protection, beating up policewomen, killing infants, waving swords, but the root cause is much deeper.

Whether you think they are morally right or wrong to not want to live within foreign cultures and share resources accordingly, in a democracy the majority is supposed to get their way. Democracy has been ignored on this issue for decades but especially the last 3 years when enough people came to suck up all the new housing capacity that labour have pledged to build over the next 5 years.

ohrwally · 04/08/2024 09:30

Would a lack of intelligence play into it? You'd have to be thick surely to cause such mindless violence.

No its people like you who make arrogant comments like this who play into it!

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 11:16

@sunsetsandboardwalks You need to live in areas where it’s rife. I live in a northern town that’s on its arse. Austerity, lack of investment, half the town full of boarded up shops, hundreds of applicants for essentially NMW jobs. Desperation, anger, frustration, jealousy. The signs of poverty are pretty obvious tbh.

alwaysmovingforwards · 04/08/2024 11:16

You say in your OP “It can’t be that they’re all just disillusioned or angry or even just thick”.

Never underestimate how disillusioned, angry and thick a lot of people involved in this sort of stuff are. It’s at their core.
Motivation coupled with low intelligence always has and always will be a dangerous mix.

Hesterschoice8761 · 04/08/2024 11:17

A surfeit of testosterone and energy and no decent or productive way of channelling it

Absent fathers or poor parental role models

An education system that is inclined in many ways towards females and a declining number of jobs involving physical skills

Lack of hope for the future

An excuse to let out pent up aggression

Toxic racist on-line rhetoric that is attractive because it purports to simplify an increasingly complex world

Destruction and looting is relatively easy and creating anything of worth is time-consuming and difficult.

A boredom reliever.

Here they come.

I will report the thread now as what seems to happen is posters get more and more emboldened until it becomes a frothing cess pool.

I saw this which I imagine will be relevant again now
