Why is it a particular type of, usually men, who are normally the instigators of civil unrest?

It can’t be that they’re all just disillusioned or angry or even just thick. It largely seems to be working class men (and yes some women). When I passed the Tommy Robinson March last week when I was in London, it was a very similar demographic although I must admit it looked mainly quite calm.

I feel angry for the families of those poor girls, it’s beyond dreadful what happened to them but the rioters must know that they’re not helping them at all (or themselves).

So is it just racism? I saw some of the videos on X last night of black men and Muslims being singled out and attacked and can’t really think it’s down to anything else. The footage was shocking.

I’m not defending the violence which I condemn absolutely but I completely understand why they are protesting. Men are more violent than women. And of course it’s the working classes. They are in competition with migrants for resources: housing, medical, education, community. If you own your own home, have a career and can afford a private dentist etc, you probably aren’t feeling so aggrieved about immigration. For many people each day is a struggle.

The rioting and racism is abhorrent but I agree with your statement. We have to think critically about any problem to find the solution. Failing to recognise the advantages the middle class have in this country will further inflame tensions.

If I was a conspiracy theorist I would think some factor is setting the poorest in our society against each other.

FolkestoneMassive · 04/08/2024 11:49

I don’t share the protesters’ politics but I absolutely defend their right to peaceful protest.

This has always been the group that is targeted for radicalisation like this. A tough life often, anger at not getting the advantages that many have, a want to have a physical outlet for that anger, promised so much and given so little. Out of work there may be little money to do much and time to think. It means they can easily be directed to blame that on “others” whether it be Muslims, Jews, Irish people, Black people at various times through history.

The women are stereotypically (but also genuinely) possibly less want to have a violent outlet and are busy with the realities of life.

This is spot on.

Rather then look inwardly at why they’re not successful or happy in life they blame others. Media then has a constant stream of “look at these foreigners, getting all our tax money” and they think a-ha that’s why my life’s a misery.

Liverpoolma123 · 04/08/2024 11:53

'A peaceful protest ' . Are you having a laugh?!

A person puller from their car .
A library/ food bank burnt down.
Nazi salutes.

So many people will be terrified today.

It's shocking that people are accepting of the above behaviour.

lovelysunshine22 · 04/08/2024 11:54

@79Helene many of these people don't want to integrate no matter what happens! Also it is on THEM to integrate and assimilate not on the local community to adapt to them! I have lived abroad and it was on me to adapt not the other way round!

Too outing to disclose details, but I have had exposure to a lot of data analytics about this type of man (it is almost always men; the vanishingly few women are psychologically in thrall to a man).

Low intellectual ability and poor educational attainment.
School refusal from year 7 or even before.
Poor parenting and generational trauma.
Family background is financially precarious - but the welfare state and/or a manual trade and particularly the purchase of a council house by their parents or grandparents has enriched them enough to give them some agency and affluence, but also a lot of envy and resentment about those who have accelerated progress - eg immigrants.
Cash in hand work or grey economy.
Very high incidence of alcohol, cigarette/ vape, recreational drugs, online gambling usage.
Very high likelihood of living with parents into late adulthood.

In short: not intelligent, badly parented, bored, cash-rich men with a lot of sadness and anger finding its outlet in violence and destruction.

They have been emboldened and exploited by shameless narcissistic charlatans in politics and the media, but they have always been with us and exist in many countries.

Exactly. I work in these communities. We had some success with sure start etc in turning this around. However years of Tory government meant this as all stopped. Mental health and substance misuse services don’t have the capacity to support people to change. They have no opportunities to work other than in the grey economy you talk about. Their children aren’t getting the education they deserve and so the cycle continues.

I have compassion for all those wanting to come here for a better life. I also have compassion for those who are born here and are being failed by society.

They're not rioting because they belong to a certain demographic. They are rioting because they feel they have grievances which are not being addressed.

lovelysunshine22 · 04/08/2024 11:58

@79Helene well thats a very well thought out answer 🙄

They are routing because they are thugs and agitators.

Alcohol and coke. Don't pay attention to the news. No hobbies.

This is spot on.
These people are thick and underoccupied, we shouldn't bother looking for political meaning behind it, when it's simply knee jerk blaming of others (non white people/ the wrong people, obviously) for the fact they're unhappy / bored.
This country would be so much better without them.
Many of the migrants who come here have far more to offer the country than they do, ironically.

I think violent disorder is becoming just more common in general. Social media makes it easier to find likeminded people and organise things. As well as increasing anger, division, resentment and a lack of respect for authorities or people you see as other or at odds with your personal religion or way of life.

Its becoming more common because the gap between rich and poor has widened hugely and social inequality is marked.
Nobody wants to confront the difficult truth that some parts of uk society have been absolutely exploited by a wealthy minority so its not hugely surprising that these groups are becoming more angry.
Once upon a time a working class male could aspire to a comfortable life. Going into a trade was a respected career for a young man, and they could expect to marry, support of family on their wage.
Now going into a trade is 'frowned upon' and lesser - young men are told it's not good enough and they should be going to university.
Many young women now may not see a tradesman as a good match - they are looking for someone with a university education and 'prospects'.
This creates a pool of young men who are increasingly marginalised. As others have noted, this group are most likely to see migrants as just another thing making their life harder, competing for jobs, housing, resources.
If we don't look after social equality and make sure things are fair in society this is what happens.
The way these groups behave is awful but there is a reason it happens.

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 12:07

This will not go away just because rioters are dealt with swiftly (unlike other groups rioting which has been noted). This government has very low support -one of the lowest vote numbers ever despite the highest population ever and very low turnout. Less than half the number who voted for Brexit voted for Labour they just benefited from the collapse of the Tory vote which was also linked to the issues people are angry about. They are already making a complete mess of things.

If there weren't so many people economically inactive in the UK we wouldn't need the levels of immigration we bring in to fill the jobs.

Economic migrants can still claim asylum.

What they shouldn't be doing is paying criminals to cross the channel and they shouldn't be allowed to stay here. Obtain a visa and come here lawfully.

a white, working immigrant who came here legally, sexually assaulted me last year. funny that arent shouting about them isnt it? just the ones whose skin colour and religion they dont like

OK what in detail is their actual problem? Apart from raiding Gregg's and using 'immigrants same with Brexit when they are asked to give actual details of what they have issues with they can never come up with a coherent sentence let alone a full detailed argument

lollipoprainbow · 04/08/2024 12:08

When there's a huge surplus of single young males, it's going to be a problem.

This post is incredibly arrogant. What is someone supposed to do about being “thick”? They’ve either been let down by genetics or by the education system. White working-class males are often under-achievers.

most crimes dont make the news so im not sure of your exact point? my point is, the save our women, save our kids bullshit they are spouting, they are only directing towards people who dont match their skin colour. they'll be the first in line for medical treatment from black and brown doctors and nurses when they have an accident or their granny gets sick but god forbid those same black and brown people want to live in the same community as them.

But it's a strange type of stupid who thinks, yeah I will spout far right bollocks and then wonder why a woman won't give them the time of day, because after the brown people it's the gays, after the gays it's the women.

It's a very slippery slope.
