I'm so mortified by what this woman said to me, I don't want to go back to the gym.

I'm so embarrassed. I have lost 4 stone in the last year by eating more healthily and I started going to the gym about 6 months ago in a bit to become more toned and generally feel better. I'm now a size 12 and happy enough with that. I'm 57 and I haven't found it easy.

I really enjoy the gym now and go about 4/5 times a week, on my own, and do my own thing. I feel great. This evening as I was just about to start using the rowing machine, a woman (who is super fit and absolutely stunning) approached me and said 'I don't mean to be rude, but those leggings do nothing for you because you can see your cellulite through them, you might be better with joggers'. She then went back to her equally stunning friend and they seemed to have a good old giggle.

I'm so mortified. My leggings are normally Sweaty Betty ones, not 'up the bum' ones and I wear a long tee shirt too. I felt quite good when I went in tonight and now I'm back to feeling like an overweight old bag and I never want to set foot in there again. I will though, I've worked hard to feel healthier - I just understand why anyone would say something like that. I daresay she can see my cellulite, but why bring someone down like that?

Read your club membership rules - she may well have breached them. If so, report her.

PeanutsLunadexter · 04/08/2024 10:49

That's such a nasty thing to say. Please don't change yr time you go. You could always say the classic MN "Did you mean to be so rude" last time you spoke to me, you should keep your comments to yourself, and hope the staff have a word. that behavior is un acceptable.

reallywhywouldyou · 04/08/2024 10:50

What a bitch!
Well done on your health and fitness journey Op 💕

It's almost hard to believe that someone could be so rude. You need to report this to the manager to prevent it happening to others also.

Please don’t stop going to the gym. If she mentions cellulite or anything else again just say “why do you think I’m here? It’s not for the bloody company is it?!”

Fantastic response.

Oh I wish I could quickly think of such clever replies at the time rather than two days later!

Pigeon66 · 04/08/2024 10:56

I am furious on your behalf. What sort of a miserable, immature person spends their time in the gym examining others and looking to find fault with their appearance? She sounds deeply insecure and nasty and I hope she won't put you off your fitness journey.

Notgettinganyeasier · 04/08/2024 10:56

I'm not one for posting but having just read this I can't believe how rude some people are! Lots of women have cellulite no matter what size they are!
I find that people who have to make passive aggressive comments are usually insecure in themselves. Well done on your weight loss and wear whatever you want to!

I don't think it's that, she's head to toe in Lululemon and expensive trainers. Always tanned and gorgeous. I actually felt quite envious of her over the last few months but I don't now, she may look amazing and I'm very ordinary, but I would never be deliberately unkind to anyone. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't even respond to her at the time, I was just so taken back.

I thought maybe I would change the times that I go to avoid her but why the hell should I, so I'm going at the same time.

YES, OP! Get back in that gym and keep wearing your leggings and show her and her friend just how irrelevant their opinions are.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 04/08/2024 11:00

Op............ please do again walk in front of the entitled instagrammer filming for content. People like that need to quit being so self absorbed,
Dont let idiots put you off - you've done so well to get to where you are. Keep going!

FinallyMovingHouse · 04/08/2024 11:01

Our gym blasts the message of support and equality for all and frankly I hope she gets a warning about her behaviour or a ban.

As for you - well done and I'm so pleased you're not going to let her nasty little dark thoughts and behaviour ruin your self esteem. I'm in my 50s too and we're too old to put up with that nonsense!

bakail · 04/08/2024 11:02

A bully who's not even bright enough to be subtle.

Report her and make it clear you expect her to be sanctioned.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/08/2024 11:03

Jennalong · 03/08/2024 22:16

Her comment says a lot more about her than you . Ignore her & her catty friends , and keep doing & going to the gym !
Well done on the weight loss , bet you look fab .

Absolutely this. Jeezo, what a total cow.

wadeinthewater · 04/08/2024 11:06

Awful, please don't let it stop you.

Getonwitit · 04/08/2024 11:10

Hey you have done so well and worked hard. DO NOT LET THE BITCH WIN. Strut back into that gym knowing you have all of us right behind you. She will be shocked and stunned that she hasn't beaten you.

Mosaic123 · 04/08/2024 11:12

What a cow she was to you. And that's an insult to cows!

I wouldn't have liked to hear you reply" That's so kind of

permanently · 04/08/2024 11:15

Wow. What an extremely unpleasant person.

Imagine if you had been recording yourself working out and you had uploaded the footage of her comment on SM? She wouldn't be able to leave the house!

The world is on your side OP.

Please have the strength to report her to the gym manager and never stop being so fabulous xx

Apollo365 · 04/08/2024 11:15

Well done OP.
wear those leggings again, the woman is just an utter cowbag. We are supposed to be supporting other women not dragging them down.
Jealousy looks nasty on everyone

Cocothecoconut · 04/08/2024 11:20

What a nasty bint she is

viques · 04/08/2024 11:23

BellesAndGraces · 03/08/2024 22:17

Most gyms have a code of conduct that require members to be respectful and courteous to other members. Next time you see her, I would point her out to a member of staff and ask them to speak to her about harassing other members.

Good idea.

SoMauveMonty · 04/08/2024 11:24

She's reminded me of the expression 'pride comes before a fall'. She might be "stunning" now but like the rest of us she's potentially only one serious illness, accident or difficult birth away from scarring, weight gain etc

If you feel able, report her. Said to the wrong person - a woman recovering from cancer or severe PND for example - spite like that could crucify them. Awful woman.

femfemlicious · 04/08/2024 11:28

WOW 😳. what kind of human beings are they!. They will get their karma soon!

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 04/08/2024 11:31

Focus on how awful it must be for her to be someone who behaves like that. I wouldn't want to live in her head.

viques · 04/08/2024 11:32

Those sweaty Betty leggings should be framed and hung on your wall the way footballer’s signed shirts are. They have served you well, supported you when you doubted yourself, kept you together for those last ten minutes of pain and sweat at the end of a session, been there for you on those wet rainy days when you would rather have curled up with Netflix than face the gym, they have accompanied you on a long journey without complaining or giving up at the seams, they have been in the wash a thousand times, stuffed in your gym bag next to your stinky trainers , yet they come back ready time and time again to do their job.

🏅for the sweaty leggings, they deserve their moment on the podium

VividQuoter · 04/08/2024 11:36

wherever there are humans and women groups, even 2 women, cliques and ownership of the space will happen. This is why I do what I want, when I want and not systematically. Give me a variety of things to do.

5 times in the gym at your age is intense. You don't need it. You are not fat, but you have or might have cellulite,so? Many women have all sorts of things, does it matter or what matter what stunning women do. They might think that being stunning is everything. Is it everything? Look at Hollywood and the most stunning women have been replaced with short curvy women , the nanny, the secretary and they become second wives also

Mjmum10 · 04/08/2024 11:36

I'm embarrassed for her tbh. How shameful to approach a stranger and be so nasty and inappropriate. Her opinion was neither desired or required. I'm sure you look great op, more importantly you'll have improved your physical health and fitness. Tell her to p*ss off if she approaches you again. She might look stunning but she's clearly a weirdo. Some women boost themselves by putting others down. She's definitely insecure in herself
