Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water face £168m fines by Ofwat over historic sewage spills.

Maybe protesters should redirect their concerns ?

Lizzie Dearden on radio 5 live

Here's my explanation of the origin of the idea of "two-tier" policing from my appearance on Radio 5 Live

It is part of wider far-right narrative about state-backed conspiracies against white people and/or the "right wing" that dates back years, and now it's being mainstreamed

Picking up where Liz Truss left off, it seems. She was all about "deep state" and a load of cobblers too.

Well we can thank Suella Braverman for that. If your Home Secretary gives this stuff the nod, then it is hop skip and a jump to the mainstream. Though she did not use the term itself

SerendipityJane · 06/08/2024 11:40

Also, you would have to be really really dim if you have only just cottoned onto the fact that laws - and the enforcement around them - have always been there for the protection of the wealthy or powerful from the less wealthy or powerful. Women have known this for centuries.

The CPS says Jordan Parlour, 28, has been charged with using threatening words of behaviour intended to stir up racial hatred online

This follows warnings from both the Prime Minister and CPS that online incitement of the riots will also be targeted and prosecuted

Delurking briefly to wish Blossomtoes a happy birthday and to offer a high-five to the poster referencing the Fallout Boy cover of We Didn't Start The Fire with updated lyrics! Your weekend - ahem - visitor has turned up on the Birmingham thread wittering about two-tier policing so I gracefully backed out........
Thanks as always to the measured discussion and photos of various flora and fauna, one of the very few areas of MN I bother with now

I think that thread will be pulled again. They just can't resist being racist.

Eluned Morgan elected as Wales’ next First Minister, following the resignation of Vaughan Gething.

She was chosen without opposition within the Labour group in the Senedd.

She becomes the first woman to hold the position and the sixth FM since devolution.

I’d imagine there are quite a number of young black and brown men who would agree that there is two tier policing. Just perhaps not in the way that some of the people using this at the moment imagine.

I was watching the live coverage on Sky News. it looked like a lot of drunk men shouting “Come on then.” The restraint of the Police is admirable.

Standard Fri/Sat night on Union Street. 😂

bombastix · 06/08/2024 11:51

Yes the police are restrained. But they look thin on the ground. Honestly it does not look too good.

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2024 11:54

Braverman has not posted anything on twitter for a while 🤔

https://x.com/BestForBritain/status/1820774292524523750

Potted history of the "two tier policing" canard.

All I'd add is that the first senior politician to accept the premise was Braverman, in the 8 Nov 2023 editorial over which she was sacked, and the very first time Robinson used it on X was <checks notes>

Huh. Look at that. ~AA

Happy birthday @BIossomtoes .

SerendipityJane · 06/08/2024 12:00

For some reason, I have just remembered a pure P.J.O'Rourkism from years ago. Possibly when I got my copy of "All the Trouble in the World" signed at Waterstones, Charing Cross road. The signing was supposed to start at 6, but by 5-30, so many people had crammed in, they shut the shop. Leaving a crowd of angry protesters outside banging the glass.

However that's not the story.

Around about that time he was giving radio interviews, (possibly LBC) and taking calls. Caller after caller disagreed with his views (which were quite mild, really). After the fifth or so call, the interviewer joking said, "Well, PJ, I wonder where all your supporters are ?"

"They have jobs." was the memorable put down.

Returning to current events ... it would be reactionary to suggest these thugs have no jobs and no intention of getting any either. However you do have to wonder who can riot on a weekday ? Unless you are working from home ?

"Attica ! Attica !"

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2024 12:00

Really interesting to hear how the phrase is being manipulated- I had no idea that it is linked to the great replacement theory.

Funny that Robinson & Braverman appear to be in lock step.

medianewbie · 06/08/2024 12:26

@BIossomtoes Happy Birthday!

medianewbie · 06/08/2024 12:28

@TheOnlyMrsW please can you say where you saw the Fallout 'We didn't start the Fire' clip?? It would cheer up Ds no end.

I wish journalists would be more responsible and stop asking questions about it from the starting point of its an accepted thing.

I am completely prepared to criticise the police but "two tier policing" is made up nonsense and I'm getting sick of journalists giving it airtime.

Notonthestairs · 06/08/2024 12:39

This is bloody worrying. Far right thugs planning protests/attacks on immigration lawyers -

We are aware of a potential protest being organised in Nottingham on Wednesday evening.

The location has no links to the business advertised on the internet.

Officers have visited the address and it is home to an elderly person with vulnerabilities.

x.com/nottspolice/status/1820779438751052064?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

(Not that attacks on places of work are ever justifiable but frightening when vulnerable individuals are targeted)

ghostyslovesheets · 06/08/2024 12:40

Happy birthday @BIossomtoes 🎂🎁🎈

Ive been continuously correcting the ‘illegal’ immigrants stuff here - the issue is the language used during the election- by all sides reframing those on small boats as illegal - it legitimised it - it’s not and never has been illegal to enter a country to claim asylum- by boat, lorry, plane or train and it never should be.

didnt help that our own local MP (Tamworth and Labour) made a bloody speech in the commons about residents wanting’their hotel back’ 🙄

I always shout at the TV when reference is made to illegal asylum seekers Angry

They're not illegal while they've not been processed Confused. They are simply asylum seekers Hmm And we have an international legal duty to allow people to seek asylum.

Now when and only when they've been processed and have exhausted the appeals process and still haven't left (if so ordered), then they become illegal immigrants Hmm

I seen something on Twitter from one of their telegram groups that said they’re coordinating a bunch of attacks on immigration lawyers and asylum seekers accommodation all across England at Wednesday 8pm. Not sure how true or accurate it was of course.
