The bestest of birthday wishes @BIossomtoes

And Thank you to all the usual posters not giving up on this and the Farage thread.

newnamethanks · 06/08/2024 09:38

And another reason is that the Tories depleted police numbers, yes, that was you Teresa May. You were warned and called it scaremongering. 20,000 officers down courtesy of the Party of Law and Order.

BIossomtoes · 06/08/2024 09:38

Oh, you lovely bunch of women. Thank you so much for the birthday wishes.

I so wish this mindless violence would stop, I hope they’re all locked up for a very long time.

Don’t want to be that person but tattoos are way more mainstream. Racists have them, sure, but so do loads of other totally normal and non-racist people. My lovely non racist, job in the third sector, musician in her spare time daughter is a tattoo regular - I have one myself!

also by the looks of most of the tattoos i saw on them, they were done in a shop by anyone with any qualifications....

Yes, lots of scratchers involved here!

Happy birthday Blossomtoes Flowers

Sometimes I think the countries who ban access to these apps have the right idea. Despite the fact I wouldn't want that to actually happen and don't think it's a good idea either!

i know what you mean, limiting access to social media on a country wide level gives me severe heebie jeebies. But i can understand in this case how it could help calm down some of the misinformation

mibbelucieachwell · 06/08/2024 09:45

Sending you happy Birthday wishes from Glasgowshire @BIossomtoes Cake🥂

Saucery · 06/08/2024 09:48

Happy Birthday @Blossomtoes! Hope whatever you are doing, you have a nice day Flowers

Brilliant article @cardibach , chimes exactly with my memories of Southport. Happy memories of the Botanic Gardens, shopping in Lord Street before the recessions hit it and going to events at The Atkinson. Although, it will still always be in Lancashire to me.

Apolloneuro · 06/08/2024 09:49

Happy birthday @BIossomtoes

The woof woofs were out in Plymouth last night, with their little tails wagging, barking “I want to bite bums’

I was watching the live coverage on Sky News. it looked like a lot of drunk men shouting “Come on then.” The restraint of the Police is admirable. One wally was attempting to charge up at them. He got unceremoniously put on his backside by the policemen’s shields. Silly plonker got up and tried again.

The police force has had considerable issues, undoubtedly but my goodness I was impressed and proud of Devon&Cornwall Police Force last night.

Alwaystired94 · 06/08/2024 09:52

happy birthday @BIossomtoes 😁

Yes, they got rid of 20,000 experienced police officers.

Between 2010-2018 police forces lost a quarter of their budgets. Police & prison services were not protected budgets under Austerity.

Since 2010 43% of courts were closed. A large proportion of the existing courts stand idle now because we don't have sufficient resources.

Youth programs or community services were also cut from budgets.

The Conservatives did eventually recruit more but we've lost that experience.

We are now at similar levels to 2010 - but of course this doesn't mean that we have sufficient numbers for the population.

Efacsen · 06/08/2024 10:00

This is a bit waffly and longwinded about Tommy but interesting and echoes what PP are saying here. His funding and HMRC too

''Dominic Grieve, a former attorney general for England and Wales, told the Guardian: “It is an offence to incite violence on the grounds of race, belief or sexual orientation, and there is incitement to hatred. But it’s a grey area between the right to criticise and incitement to hatred and is a very difficult area to police.

“Quite simply, that’s why it is possible for people to play around with that area. Either you clamp down on it, in which case legitimate freedom of speech gets eliminated and breeds undesirable problems of its own, or you live with it and challenge those views through debate.”

Happy birthday, @BIossomtoes . God, we're powering through this thread. May I suggest Starmer: keeping on keeping on.

PandoraSox · 06/08/2024 10:14

It's getting worse out there on the rest of mumsnet. The violence in Birmingham is a gift to the racists.

But Birmingham is the flip side of the coin. Nowhere near as bad as this far right white riot, but you can see it will be used to inflame matters further.

Wishing you thr very best of birthdays Blossom. Easter GrinCakeWine

I saw Heidi Alexander on GMB this morning. She was excellent in her answers. Very clear. Didn't rise to any bait. Was matter of fact and calm.

She also was extremely on top of her brief. Something I haven't seen a minister be for years

VimtoVimto · 06/08/2024 11:01

Happy Birthday @BIossomtoes.

I feel angry and deflated at the moment. I was never political before Brexit. I took an interest and was aware of what was happening but I wasn’t particularly invested except for going on a couple of CND marches, and being a member of Amnesty.

Prior to the referendum I did my best to dispute misinformation and online lies, including posts on local Facebook pages blaming local problems on immigrants, yet it was an area of low immigration. After the referendum I wrote to my MP on a regular basis, wrote to the PM, argued about Brexit not being the answer to the problems of the country. I was accused of being a member of the Metropolitan elite even though I lived in an ex mining town in the East Midlands.

Obviously I should just have looted Lush.

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 11:04

I commented on a thread this morning about how we can make people feel safe.

One poster kept on about not shutting down those who don't agree with illegals immigrants as far right thugs.

My suggestion was we started using the correct language then and called them what they are - asylum seekers. I pointed out people were using the incorrect terms as that's what the previous government used and they are living unprocessed 8 hotels because that's what our government decided to do for them.

No one has responded to it 🤔

SerendipityJane · 06/08/2024 11:13

My suggestion was we started using the correct language

Good luck with that. All definitions appear to be useless at the moment. And that isn't an accident. If you can shut down debate by shouting "-ist", or "anti-" at someone with no clear definition of "*" then you can guarantee there can't be any progress.

It's a trick from the past. Nothing new.

Thames Water, Yorkshire Water and Northumbrian Water face £168m fines by Ofwat over historic sewage spills.

Someone will be coughing up but will it be the shareholders or the rest of us? 😟

KS has put the water companies on a quite strict regime so hopefully in future there will be less financial dumping on consumers too

Delurking briefly to wish Blossomtoes a happy birthday and to offer a high-five to the poster referencing the Fallout Boy cover of We Didn't Start The Fire with updated lyrics! Your weekend - ahem - visitor has turned up on the Birmingham thread wittering about two-tier policing so I gracefully backed out........
Thanks as always to the measured discussion and photos of various flora and fauna, one of the very few areas of MN I bother with now
