Southport - reporting restrictions

mids2019 · 31/07/2024 15:49

So the attacker in Southport was a child (17) so will be not be reported on due to reporting restrictions. Due to proximity of the alleged attacked to adulthood and the severity of the crimes do you think in this case it is in the public interest to release at least some details of the alleged killer? Not releasing details fuels speculation that at a public level may not be helpful in my.opinion.

In addition I would think there may be a high chance the attacker had a severe mental illness so after the Nottingham attacks will the debate about personal responsibility for actions during psychosis be raised again?

Maid how to we sort male violence out? Castrate them all? Give them oestrogen injections?

swimlyn · 01/08/2024 12:54

The thick thugs are understandably upset this week because their mate, Tommy Robinson, has fled the country to avoid a court appearance.

Tommy Robinson is an assumed name of course.

Ironically, in 2010, he owned a tanning salon in Luton…

So they’ll all be smashing up churches tonight now they know he’s not a Muslim?

I'd love to see the EDL apologise publicly to the imam and congregation of Southport Masjid, apologise publicly to the police they injured, and send money to fix the damage they did.

It won't happen though. These racist thugs don't care about these girls and their families, they don't care about justice, they just want an excuse to bash Muslims.

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2024 12:57

Stopping male violence would be great but as nobody has been able to stop this in thousands of years I don't hold out much hope.

Hahahaha is that true about the tanning salon?

I don't know. It's a bigger problem than me. What I do know is that throwing mentally-ill women under the bus contributes to the stigma against and makes it easier for entitled men to abuse us with impunity.

swimlyn · 01/08/2024 12:58

Oh yes.

Hmm, I don't think a lot of them will see any difference, he's not white so it's all one big homogenous mass to them I would suggest.

FYI the EDL was fortunately disbanded years ago

And yet the police say that the rioters were EDL members.

How many of the young men last night were radicalised to break the windows of a mosque and injure 50 police officers? There are more far right young people referred to Prevent than there are Muslim young people.

But not many locked up for murdering people at random.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 01/08/2024 13:06

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen so that excuses it, right?

They're all as bad as each other

There's not many Muslims locked up for murdering people at random either. Generally, murdering people at random is very rare.

Have the thugs that were attacking the police been named yet?

Tbh I don’t feel personally thrown under the bus by people talking about this. I just don’t think some of it is helpful and contributes to the stigma that I think is part of the problem.

The main thing I’m trying to get across is the stigma can stop people getting help, and stops people from talking about it - recognising signs and symptoms and knowing what help there is out there and how to access it quickly.

It’s only when I had my episode that I found out about other people who had had episodes. It’s much more common than people realise and most people will know someone closely, or work with someone, or socialise with someone; yet have no idea! I don’t tell anyone. If you met me I would be one of the last people you would think had been sectioned with psychosis.

The early intervention in psychosis programmes in this country are world class. It’s the one part of our MH services that actually works very well. The problem is most people don’t access it early enough.

I really think we need a national conversation. That normalises psychosis. That destigmatises it. And something like the campaigns we have for stroke awareness, or drink driving that drives home to the public how to recognise psychosis, why you need to get help straight away, and how to get that help.

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 01/08/2024 19:09

Given the only public info about his mental health (and I use the term loosely as I’m well aware ND isn’t technically mental health) is his autism diagnosis, I’m surprised that isn’t being discussed more.

Which I also wouldn’t view as my own ND being thrown under the bus. If it turns out to be relevant, it needs discussion just the same as if he turns out to have been experiencing psychosis.

Autistic women don't go around murdering. Whatever mental health or neurodivergence diagnosis the suspect has, it won't be why he killed unless he was having a psychotic episode at the time.

I keep repeating that the problem is male propensity to use violence for a reason: it is.

BeyondOlympicLevelProcrastinator · 01/08/2024 19:20

I don’t disagree, I’m just surprised that it’s not being discussed.

Yes in general autistic people don’t go around murdering (as I’m well aware - I am one) but I’m pretty sure there is a correlation between ND boys being more at risk of being drawn in to incel culture online, for example.

Purely theoretically, that is.

Certainly, they are at risk of that because they are more vulnerable to being exploited, and if there's one thing that Tate and his ilk are good at it's exploitation of not only women but also gullible men.

I am not an expert in psychosis, having not undergone any medical training, so do not feel in a position to comment. Presumably you have had such training?

It is perfectly possible for someone in a psychotic state to plan and carry out their plan. Their plan will not have any underpinning in reality because of the illness, but being psychotic doesn't mean you lose your intellectual abilities - they just operate in a context where they are driven by irrational thinking. A lot of people don't know enough about mental ill health and assume that all mentally ill people who are driven to kill must do so in an uncontrolled, impulsive way. That is simply not the case.

But you do not know anything about this case or his motives.

You don't want to prejudice this case.

If you are not a psychiatrist, how would you know whether or not it is easy to obtain a diagnosis of psychosis after an event?
