For me it's the ladies Gymnastics.
I was a Gymnast at school and in the Gymnastic team ( against other schools) this was over 50 years ago ( gosh that sounds bad) it definitely wasn't anything like today.
Just floor ( no high tumbles etc) and then the horse.. no summersaults.
My gosh the young ladies are amazing.

Ice Hockey.

No interest in Track & Field, Equestrianism, all the niche sports that only about three upper class, chinless toffs the world over actually participate in.

At least with the hockey most of the best players on the planet are there, and it isn't some mickey mouse U-23 nonsense like the football. Summer Olympics could die tomorrow and I wouldn't miss it one iota.

I also love the gymnastics its just fab. I'm not really into sport really so track doesn't do much for me.

turkeyboots · 30/07/2024 19:26

Synchronised swimming. I swam competitively as a teen as does DD, but what those ladies do is just amazing.

Rugby sevens has been a revelation, I am obsessed. Currently fuming cause i missed the women's final. I love seeing strong women being awesome, it has genuinely given me joy.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 30/07/2024 19:27

The gymnasts are just UNREAL.

CharlotteRumpling · 30/07/2024 19:27

Women's gymnastics and athletics. I think the female form is beautiful to behold. Not in a sexual way!

Oh yes I watch this if I manage to catch it.

Modern Pentathlon. Recreating escaping form prison in the late 18th century. Absolutely bonkers.

But I'm a cyclist at heart, so anything to do with bikes.

SnapdragonToadflax · 30/07/2024 19:30

Diving. I just love how precise it is, especially when it's pairs. And how inviting the water looks.

I hate heights and have never even dared jump into a pool, let alone dive, so it's unfathomable to me that people can do it.

sagalooshoe · 30/07/2024 19:30

climbing

especially the speed climbing

. . . because it feels like it's the closest to our ape ancestors we can get 🐒

Mrsjayy · 30/07/2024 19:31

I think that's why they start kids diving young @SnapdragonToadflax they have no fear !

WrittenOnWater · 30/07/2024 19:34

I love the modern pentathlon too, but really it’s all very watchable. I was interested to hear recently how watching sports can trigger similar mental rewards to participating in them. www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/04/240415110530.htm

Colinthecaterpillarstrikesagain · 30/07/2024 19:35

Women’s gymnastics.

I ADORE watching Simone Biles and the USA team. I like watching the Italian team too.

I prefer watching diving but enjoy swimming too.

BESTAUNTB · 30/07/2024 19:42

Athletics. I have early memories of Coe, Ovett, Cram, Zola Budd, Mary Decker, FloJo, Carl Lewis, Fatima Whitbread. Then Colin Jackson, Liz McColgan, Roger Black, Sally Gunnell, Michael Johnson when I was a teen. I loved it.

LlynTegid · 30/07/2024 19:42

Track and field athletics has always been the main thing of the Olympics I have taken an interest in. Finally got to be at a major championships when seeing the relays in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Enjoyed the cycling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, especially because the Welsh flag was raised when Emma Finucaine won a medal. Cymru am Byth!

ErinAoife · 30/07/2024 19:43

Love basketball, used to play when I was teen. The American team have such great players. Love Nikola jokic from the Serbian team, very funny in the Deapicable me 4 advert.

itsgettingweird · 30/07/2024 19:47

Swimming.

My dad and brother both swam and ds is a para swimmer.

All very good and British/ national level.

Ds has competed at euros.

I know how much goes into even just a quick length!

I'm in awe of them.

Also love watching gymnastics and athletics.

itsgettingweird · 30/07/2024 19:48

I also love watching the cycling - prefer the velodrome!

Mamadont · 30/07/2024 19:48

Shooting, pow pow pow

RhetoricalRectangle · 30/07/2024 19:58

LOVE the olympics.

Track and field (especially sprints) is what makes it for me.

Also love the diving, equestrian, gymnastics and seeing random sports I never usually would (like archery or canoeing).

SoundTheSirens · 30/07/2024 19:59

Three day eventing, assuming that as a working class northern woman I’m allowed to enjoy something that’s only for “chinless toffs”*, apparently. I love it because it tests the partnership of horse and rider so thoroughly across three different disciplines, it requires accuracy, bravery, skill and stamina AND it’s one of the very few sports where men and women compete on level terms.

*Is it only the GB team that are so designated btw, or does that apply to everyone? The Japanese team who won their first ever equestrian medal? The Irish team? Is Laura Collett, who came back from a riding accident which nearly killed her and left her blind in one eye to win team gold and individual bronze, just a “chinless toff”?

(What a weird way to signify support for a favourite sport, by tearing down other people’s!)

Jorvik1978 · 30/07/2024 20:02

All the equestrian events. As a horse owner/rider who keeps all four hooves firmly on the ground (apart from the odd rearing/bucking incident), I am in awe of those tackling the huge obstacles.

Oh, and I'm a working class rider who spends every last penny on my passion ... Certainly not an upper class chinless wonder.

WrittenOnWater · 30/07/2024 20:07

I’ve always had horses despite my multiple chins.

NewName24 · 30/07/2024 20:13

Athletics, by a long chalk.

If need a specific event, it is the 4x 100m and 4 x 400m relays.

Agreed, and put much more politely than I would have!
