For me it's the ladies Gymnastics.
I was a Gymnast at school and in the Gymnastic team ( against other schools) this was over 50 years ago ( gosh that sounds bad) it definitely wasn't anything like today.
Just floor ( no high tumbles etc) and then the horse.. no summersaults.
My gosh the young ladies are amazing.

My favourite is the Paralympics !! Starts on the 28th August !!

Yep we will be watching that. Shame it's not on during most of school holidays but will catch anything we miss as well as the weekly The Last leg.

Ds has lots of friends/ team mates competing so it's very personal.

Show jumping

And Scott Brash is most definitely not a toff! He's the son of a builder from Peebles.
Neither are many other show jumpers of current times or before

Track and field
Gymnastics
Andy Murray having his last fling - agonising to watch him though- he gets my heart in my mouth every time he plays. Massively hoping he gets a medal!!

Ice Hockey.

No interest in Track & Field, Equestrianism, all the niche sports that only about three upper class, chinless toffs the world over actually participate in.

At least with the hockey most of the best players on the planet are there, and it isn't some mickey mouse U-23 nonsense like the football. Summer Olympics could die tomorrow and I wouldn't miss it one iota.

You’ll find even in the “lower class” sports most of the participants are from well off backgrounds. GB team at least.

it costs a lot to keep a kid in elite sport. Even if items a “cheap” sport once you get to junior international level unless you’re one or the rare chosen ones you’re paying all your travel and competition costs.

a friends dd competed in junior Europeans. It cost them £1k to send her. Especially annoying when she beat the kid who’d had all her cost paid.

they worked out between training fees, fuel, competition fees, travel, hotels etc it probably cost about 10k per year to keep her at that level.

I'm watching it too.

These athletes are machines 🤩

I know! Now watching the men's. Had never seen triathlon before the 2012 Olympics when it was in Hyde Park and they swam in the Serpentine. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, especially the transitions, and the incredible Brownlee brothers who grew up a few miles from where we lived in Leeds when I was a teenager. Now rooting for Alex Yee, who grew up not far from where I live now in SE London.

I was briefly watching women running in swimsuits and shorts this morning, I'm assuming it was trialathalon that's all a bit mad isn't it ? How do you know decide you want to do 3 sports at once!

My favourite seems to be any sport that we are about to win a medal in🥉🥈🏅

Haha yes. I watched the Trap Shooting yesterday and I didn't even know what Trap Shooting was before I started watching. 🤣

Our Nathan was incredible. How he can shoot something flying through the air at 60 miles an hour and have a reaction speed of under 1 second is absolutely beyond me.

I think being mad is a pretty good start! I get the impression that you start by being good at one of them and able to do the others to a reasonable standard, and it develops from there.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 31/07/2024 10:59

... and not really madder than decathlon or heptathlon, I suppose.

Newgirls · 31/07/2024 11:12

Love triathlon - and the setting is incredible today

Lampzade · 31/07/2024 11:14

Gymnastics and Athletics -
Love watching Simone Biles. .. perfection

Carebearsonmybed · 31/07/2024 11:16

Gymnastics.

I remember watching it when I was in primary school.

I did classes for a short time but was useless!

Izzynohopanda · 31/07/2024 11:22

For me, the appeal of the Olympics is seeing sports you don’t normally see - diving, archery, sailing, canoeing/kayaking plus athletics, gymnastics, swimming etc.

i’m not so bothered with tennis as we’ve just had Wimbledon etc. (although will watch Murreys).

If I have to name one, I’d go for canoe slalom. since Richard Fox days (whose daughter now represents Australia in the sport).

WellSpent · 31/07/2024 11:57

Swimming- I competed as a child and again aged 50+ . USA much less dominant this Olympics- and that's a good thing, golds being spread around many different countries. I'm watching all the heats every morning as well as the finals.
Enjoy all the aquatic sports, will watch athletics finals, a bit of track cycling, skateboarding. But I don't really care for any of the ball games, especially rugby, tennis, football- they're always on the TV all year round.

Alarae · 31/07/2024 12:45

Gymnastics (I like the men's and women's, but the latter is better to me).

Then figure skating for the Winter Olympics.

Emmz1510 · 03/08/2024 10:27

Gymnastics (all of it!), swimming, tennis.
I do like diving but it annoys me! I’m always thinking it was perfect and beautiful but the scorers find fault.
Im not massively into the track and field stuff but OH likes it so will probably watch

BurntBroccoli · 03/08/2024 13:31

Watched the men's individual gymnastics the other night. Absolutely amazing! They are all so polite and lovely to each other too.
Must admit my heart is in my mouth when I watch them catching that high bar after a twist!

BurntBroccoli · 03/08/2024 13:32

Watched a bit of the kayaking too but found it a bit tedious. Must be exciting to compete in though.

BeaRF75 · 03/08/2024 13:38

So many, because it's the variety that is fantastic. But specifically tennis and track cycling are my top two. Plus road cycling, gymnastics, mountain biking, BMX, rowing, 3 day event, showjumping, track and field, swimming, trap shooting, triathlon..... see? So many!

Can't get into basketball or handball, admittedly.

I love the idea of sailing, but it's hard to follow on TV.

The only ones I struggle with are things like judo and taekwando, coz I don't understand the scoring.

MsNevermore · 03/08/2024 17:46

I was a gymnast from toddler right up to 15 and competed at county level….wasn’t that long ago in the grand scheme of things, and I am still in complete awe of the USA and Brazilian women’s team!
I’m not entirely convinced Simone Biles is fully human 😂 The physics just shouldn’t work - like how no scientist can figure out how a bumblebee flies, but it does 🤷🏻‍♀️😂
