I reckon after 12 years of dozen fuel duty that drivers will be next

what tax will the collect next to fill the black hole

Yep I'll give you fuel duty. But it will be dressed up as tackling the "climate emergency"

So I would expect increase in air passenger duty, and introduction of hotel taxes.

Shinyandnew1 · 30/07/2024 17:38

Michelle Mone, hopefully.

Nw22 · 30/07/2024 17:39

Hopefully an increase in fuel duty, cgt and inheritance tax

ChilledOut79 · 30/07/2024 17:40

I would say CGT, IHT, Pensions and then VAT on University fees in the medium term.

LlynTegid · 30/07/2024 17:41

I hope that some motorists are taxed more. It would not be fuel duty for me but PCP and similar payments for larger cars.

I'd tax frequent flyers not the once a year holiday flight.

What would you do OP?

Santagotrippedoffbyareindeer · 30/07/2024 17:45

I hope they clamp down on the "candy stores" and mobile phone stores that are a plague on our high streets.

Karton · 30/07/2024 17:45

Possibly they will look to revise the Barnett formula. Also relax planning so that developers can build a lot more houses, but then up the section 106 percentage so it’s far less profitable to the developers.

Spectre8 · 30/07/2024 17:46

They are introducing road tax on electric vehicles, fuel duty, cgt, inheritance tax, expanding ulez to other cities, then pay per mile roads, reassessing council tax bands on par with whatever happened in Wales since that's there blueprint.

Will VAT on university fees raise any money? Surely the loans that pay them come from government money, so it’ll be borrowing from themselves and increasing the debt burden on the young. Can’t see any positive messages from that scenario.

RationalityIsHard · 30/07/2024 17:48

I'd like them to tax luxuries more, as they are already doing with the VAT on private schools, but use it to subsidise the essentials.

So tax flights and big SUVs\Range Rovers\etc and use the money to subsidise the trains.

Or tax luxury food and drink and subsidise british fruit and veg.

Or tax private healthcare and use it to fund the NHS.

However the most obvious thing to do, but also the hardest, is to tax the wealth of the very rich (anyone with over 10 million in assets) and especially the super rich (over 500 million) before they own literally everything and most of us go back to being serfs.

Countrylife2002 · 30/07/2024 17:50

Yes I’d go for taxes on luxuries and wealth - so taxes added on more than one flight trip a year , whack taxes on ridiculous sized cars, increased council tax on luxury homes, increased capital gains and inheritance. Gap between the wealthy and those who are struggling needs to be hugely reduced.

I can’t see an across the board fuel duty rise but definitely I can see something for the larger cars .

AmusedMaker · 30/07/2024 17:52

Inheritance tax definitely.

Airbrb · 30/07/2024 17:54

Not just the “black hole”
they are also doing major spending on teacher/doctor pay etc
They have to find billions and billions.
There is a limit to what they can take from richer people before they emigrate or change their behaviour.

so it will have to come from normal people, like the winter fuel withdrawal

they’ll have to increase tax on petrol, for example

Countrylife2002 · 30/07/2024 17:55

Maybe it would be a good idea to raise council tax for home owners, so that there is a differentiation between what renters pay and what home owners pay (speaking a a home owner I know how lucky I am). Graduated progressive rise depending on value of property.

Wafflefudge · 30/07/2024 17:56

Trouble with fuel duty is it penalises people living in rural areas who already have lower earnings in general.
Luxury taxes would be good as they are completely discretionary. Things like luxury cars, designer goods etc.

I don’t think it’s fair to go for larger cars. My “kids” and dh are all a long way over 6 foot. I had to get a larger car to fit us in it! My large car is not a luxury brand and does not have a large engine. So I’d be pissed to be hit by a tall tax essentially.

Nope. Let's make home ownership affordable & accessible for as many people as possible!

Also, most renters pay council tax anyway.

Countrylife2002 · 30/07/2024 17:59

@Airbrb i think I mean luxury more than large cars. Luxury tend to be large but not all large are luxury!

7Blunders · 30/07/2024 17:59

I don't know why but it's all making me feel very miserable.
For the first time in my life I was starting to feel like we had some head room. We've had one disaster after another, credit crisis when dc were born, etc etc, covid and I must admit I was starting to feel positive at the end of tories.
Raising the tax threshold really helped me but I just have this awful sinking feeling.
I can't help feel quality of life here is going to plummet.
We needed those new hospitals, we need infrastructure and green spaces.
Every time we take a step forward I feel we are taking ten back.
I live in a town and some locals tried to fight for green space to be retained and not developed on. Unfortunately they lost but Michael gove gave us hope because he then mentioned something or had a scheme that seemed to ask foe more considerate quality of life etc.

But in one swoop it's all gone.
Unless you're very wealthy and can afford a detached house with lots of land it's all going to be very miserable.

dottiehens · 30/07/2024 18:00

My question is who would like to remain here? Tax to death even for breathing. In the meantime masses of people moving in from poor countries so we will never catch up. What a misery land.

Large cars is tricky. Growing up, my family moved to one 7 seater car so we all fit in, rather than the 2 x 5 seaters where we would have to take 2 cars everywhere (including driving to seaside on holiday, visiting family etc). We cut our emissions a lot by using 1 x bigger vehicle & I'm sure same for many others!

Countrylife2002 · 30/07/2024 18:00

@anonhop my idea is that renters pay less council tax than home owners to allow them more chance of saving a deposit to become a home owner . Or possibly - just to be able to pay the rent.
and rent caps , definitely, but that’s not revenue raising.

Littlemissnikib · 30/07/2024 18:01

How would you police that though?!?!

and how would it be fair? You could go to Australia and I could fly to Scotland!

SeeSeeRider · 30/07/2024 18:01

Inheritance is only paid by 4% of estates, apparently. Room for a bit more there to help the country out, I think?
