Would people have preferred to continue with the Tories staffing money on the Rwanda scheme they knew was illegal, and giving contracts to their dodgy mates?

Honestly.

They are introducing road tax on electric vehicles, fuel duty, cgt, inheritance tax, expanding ulez to other cities, then pay per mile roads, reassessing council tax bands on par with whatever happened in Wales since that's there blueprint.

No they're not. Road tax was abolished in this country almost 100 years ago.

Give it time. Once all the countryside in the south is under concrete and the north south divide widened there'll be some noise.

I suspect that none of that will happen in my lifetime, so I'm not holding my breath.

Historically, borrowing has been lower under Labour, so has unemployment, and most of the things that have really benefited the country have been introduced by Labour. And I say that as someone who, up until 2010, predominantly voted Conservative 😮

HappiestSleeping · 30/07/2024 19:04

What was the alternative though? The Conservatives have buggered the UK way more than this lot could ever do. Ultimately, they damaged the economy for decades to come so whoever got it, it would be challenging for us mere mortals.

At least the government has announced a series of steps to try and improve the country, which is a pleasant change from the previous one, that only tried to enrich themselves and their mates.

In the interests of factual accuracy I would like to to point out that 1.4% of the UK is built on, (2% of England).

Reducing pension tax relief to 20% across the board isn't a bad idea. Same with other salary sacrifice schemes, seems crazy higher earners get to save more money when buying bikes or tech or cars via these schemes.

I don’t disagree with you, but there are some technical difficulties particularly around defined benefit schemes (which are only really available in the public sector now). Plus ways of avoiding it entirely through additional employer contributions etc.

I think if that was going to raise a lot of money someone would have already done it - it’s been talked about for years.

LittlePudding1 · 30/07/2024 19:12

RationalityIsHard · 30/07/2024 17:48

I'd like them to tax luxuries more, as they are already doing with the VAT on private schools, but use it to subsidise the essentials.

So tax flights and big SUVs\Range Rovers\etc and use the money to subsidise the trains.

Or tax luxury food and drink and subsidise british fruit and veg.

Or tax private healthcare and use it to fund the NHS.

However the most obvious thing to do, but also the hardest, is to tax the wealth of the very rich (anyone with over 10 million in assets) and especially the super rich (over 500 million) before they own literally everything and most of us go back to being serfs.

100% agree with this

And the UK allowed young white girls to be repeatedly raped by Asian gangs due to institutional racism. There are lots of examples of black/Asian women being let down in the UK too by the UK legal system. Dubai has significant issues, but the UK is no Nirvana.

The women and girls complaining in the UK didn't get thrown in jail though.

There's UK levels of bad and UAE levels of bad and you are off your rocker if you think they are remotely similar.

Whereas this lot will relish spreading poverty. How many pensioners are on the cusp of needing pension credit but dont qualify as they've looked after themselves all these years. Now they've lost the winter fuel payment by the so called "working class" party. LIke it or not, the country runs better when the poshies are in charge, not their bitter counterparts who paradoxically want to screw the working class more.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2024 19:13

I’m just depressed that they scrapped the £86K care cap (for personal care costs only, not accommodation food etc). It’s costing £7k a month for my poor DM’s care home. She has dementia, which is basically a tax in itself. Another possible silver lining gone.

Scandiviews1 · 30/07/2024 19:14

There's a limit to how much they can raise in tax. UK plc spends far more than it can raise. So eventually they will need to cut welfare and raise the retirement age. Which will cause an outrage. So it won't be done. We are stuffed sadly.

I hope people are punished like buggery for voting in this lot.

Well half the country were punished like buggery by the last lot, so it’s only fair that turns are taken.

Out of interest, how would you pay for the enormous cost of Covid, and rebuilding our now-destroyed country?

While planning to become an immigrant herself.

Tell that to the gang raped girls.

I don’t think I am off my rocker (!), but I do think it is a bit pot kettle black thinking the UK is so much better than Dubai law and order wise. Although I am not moving to Dubai anyway so this is all a bit academic.

Only half?

Covid didn't help, but was insignificant compared to the cost of Brexit and the Trussterfuck.

Every single suggestion on this thread could be summarised as “tax stuff more that I can’t, won’t or don’t have so only ‘other’ people pay more tax”.

People with no cars saying tax people with cars

People with small cars saying tax people with large cars

Boringly predictable race to the bottom. Tax should be focused on raising in a sustainable, efficient, non-arbitrary and equitable way the minimum amount needed to maintain good quality public services and civil society. It’s not about using envy to right perceived wrongs.

Loads of posters on this thread have suggested more tax on things they have or do, meaning they would pay more. Just because you don't want to pay more towards public services doesn't mean everyone thinks like that.

Exactly, Labour are trying to dig us out of a mess caused by the Tories.

Andthereitis · 30/07/2024 19:40

TheThingIsYeah · 30/07/2024 17:37

Yep I'll give you fuel duty. But it will be dressed up as tackling the "climate emergency"

So I would expect increase in air passenger duty, and introduction of hotel taxes.

Hotel tax would push more into accepting migrants

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/07/2024 19:42

IHT should be applied to the whole estate.

At the moment, my Mum's estate is unlikely to qualify for IHT. So I will benefit from a completely unearned windfall. Labour should bring in IHT from £0 - my Mums estate would then make a payment and I would still benefit, just at a lower value.

TheThingIsYeah · 30/07/2024 19:48

Andthereitis · 30/07/2024 19:40

No I meant that tax that you pay as a guest, you know when you go to say Rome at it's a couple of euros per night. I could see something like that being introduced in the UK.

Mamadont · 30/07/2024 19:49

HappiestSleeping · 30/07/2024 19:28

Who screws the working class taxpayer the most?

Livelovebehappy · 30/07/2024 19:49

Clearly on here, the overwhelming wish is to see the poorer become a lot richer, and the richer to become a lot poorer. People go to university, spend many years studying to get a very well paid job. Think GPs, solicitors, accountants etc. But according to some on MN, they should be only marginally better off than someone working the tills in Tescos. Why would people even bother to go through years of training, incurring £9k a year student fees, to not be earning according to their skill set?

StoneHenge85 · 30/07/2024 19:49

Income tax at 40% flat rate for everyone regardless. That’s fair isn’t it?
