All of the above, plus:

CGT
Reducing tax relief on pension contributions.

They can’t take their houses or commercial properties.

They can sell them though. Dhs cousin is a multimillionaire, he can work from home anywhere.

caringcarer · 30/07/2024 18:22

They hate pensioners and so called Baby Boomers. I predict 1. they will stop £125k inheritance exemption for DC or DGC after death of a parent/grandparent. 2. They'll stop or restrict annual gifting of £3k per parent to DC each year. 3. They'll stop the tax relief at 40/45 percent on pension contributions. 4. They raise CGT from 24 percent to match income tax bands of 20/40/45 percent. 5. I think they might raise free prescriptions from 60 to 67 years. 6. I think in 2 years time they will go back on their word to stick to triple lock. That's just for starters. 7. They could also simplify child benefits to household income.

Great. Then tax anyone taking x million out of the country, plus we get some much needed housing.

Are you off to Dubai? Or the US? If so, rather you than me, I'd not trust either of those places as an expat.

Neither. But if you think many wealthy people will choose London over Dubai or Florida at the moment for some semblance of historical civility and fairness, I think you are mistaken.

pinkwaterbottle9 · 30/07/2024 18:24

Min wage. Live 10 miles from work. Very rural have to drive to work. So they'll tax me more on fuel and car tax. Have a small 10yr old car. Not looking forward to it.

Boltonb · 30/07/2024 18:25

I’d support changes/increases in CGT, inheritance tax, and a new “luxury” tax. Higher council tax on multimillion pound homes and on second homes. Introduce road tax for electric vehicles.

ChilledOut79 · 30/07/2024 18:25

@HarryLimeFoxtrot I don't for one moment think it would be a good idea, but I doubt that would stop the Labour government from considering it. Whilst they are Government loans they charge interest so the compounded interest is where they would make.

Reading the outpouring of posts here which promotes taxing those with nicer cars / homes etc. even more, demonstrates the level of entitlement which is a cancer to success in this country.

Why would the "other" people ever want to pay additional tax, when they can palm it off on anyone else they perceive has more.

I'm not referring to super wealthy, but middle to high income earners who already pay proportionately more than any other tax paying cohort....let's tax them even more because they have something you may not have. What ever happened to aspiration.

I haven't seen any post on MN where someone advocates for a universal income tax rate of say 40%....just a thought...but that would fund services no problem!

No thank you say those not in that bracket.....let's just pass the burden over to those net contributors already subsidising the net recipients.

“Those homeless people” are people like you and me who have worked all their lives and seen rents spiral while wages don’t. Landlord sells up and suddenly there is nowhere affordable where they pass what are very stringent credit checks. Or they lose their job or become unwell. There are people living in hostels with their kids who have worked all their lives and now they can’t find anywhere to rent .

Here we go I wondered how long before LL bashing started. Many say LL should not own more than 1 house. Others complain when LL's sell up. LL can never win.

Will VAT on university fees raise any money? Surely the loans that pay them come from government money, so it’ll be borrowing from themselves and increasing the debt burden on the young. Can’t see any positive messages from that scenario.

The VAT on university fees is scare-mongering

Really? You’ve got two million for his house? How about we just take their house and put a family of proles into each room 😃 it can be like Russia during the Revolution.

Tax Tax Tax, tax the capitalists & make them live in Shard End.

Michelle Mone, hopefully.

Don't think they'd get much for her. Thieving scumbag.

dottiehens · 30/07/2024 18:27

But the poor would also leave soon. They are paying $150.000 a year for a housekeeper in Florida. O wait? The British are above those jobs which is why is always the immigrants doing those jobs.

Wafflefudge · 30/07/2024 18:27

Reducing pension tax relief to 20% across the board isn't a bad idea. Same with other salary sacrifice schemes, seems crazy higher earners get to save more money when buying bikes or tech or cars via these schemes.

I guess if they trust the authorities in the gulf or the US to look after expats best interests in the same ways as their own, then good for them. I’d not go anywhere near those countries, either as a home or even a holiday destination.

Where are you thinking of?

HarryLimeFoxtrot · 30/07/2024 18:28

@ChilledOut79 - I agree that once you accept that education can be taxed you open the door to VAT being added to all sorts of things. Music/dance/drama lessons, private tutoring, sports clubs.

RedToothBrush · 30/07/2024 18:29

Airbrb · 30/07/2024 17:57

I don’t think it’s fair to go for larger cars. My “kids” and dh are all a long way over 6 foot. I had to get a larger car to fit us in it! My large car is not a luxury brand and does not have a large engine. So I’d be pissed to be hit by a tall tax essentially.

It's perfectly fair. DH is 6'2" and loves driving my picanto.

Personally I'd license larger cars so you have to have an actual reason for them. Then ban the rest.

PerfectYear321 · 30/07/2024 18:29

ticktickticktickBOOM · 30/07/2024 18:08

I'd agree with tax on forecourt petrol and diesel, and a tax on large cars/SUV's. They are too big for car parks, they block the vision on roads.

We really don't need to spend money on unnecessary things like changing the A level system or vanity projects.

The subsidised food and drink at Westminster is a joke. Cheapest menu and alcohol in the country. They should pay the going rate.
Subsidise fresh British fruit and veg for all schools instead.

Yeah, why is every new car gigantic these days? I saw a Mini the other day and it looked more like a Maxi

HappiestSleeping · 30/07/2024 18:30

Spectre8 · 30/07/2024 17:46

They are introducing road tax on electric vehicles, fuel duty, cgt, inheritance tax, expanding ulez to other cities, then pay per mile roads, reassessing council tax bands on par with whatever happened in Wales since that's there blueprint.

Tax on electric vehicles had already been proposed by the previous lot.

I would introduce inheritance tax on farms not operated by the owner, change non dom status, and introduce pay per mile road tax which is much fairer.

The whole 20bn black hole is misleading though so I don't pay too much attention. So far, their activities appear to make complete sense and are not knee jerk, which is good to see.

The best thing would an annual tax on the value of unimproved land. But that will never get past the king's right to veto bills that adversely affect him.

I hope they clamp down on the "candy stores" and mobile phone stores that are a plague on our high streets.

I'm sure I read last week that the 1,000 civil servants ( yes ONE THOUSAND) that were working on the Rwanda debacle were going to be diverted to this very problem. The most sensible Labour decision this far. I hope they follow through with it because I think the problem of dirty money in this country is on a vast scale.

Think about it. It's not just confined to the less salubrious parts of London anymore, but every town and village. Barbers, nail bars, phone shops, candy stores, dessert shops, convenience stores. And that's just the stuff in plain sight....

YourOchreKoala · 30/07/2024 18:32

Every single suggestion on this thread could be summarised as “tax stuff more that I can’t, won’t or don’t have so only ‘other’ people pay more tax”.

People with no cars saying tax people with cars

People with small cars saying tax people with large cars

Boringly predictable race to the bottom. Tax should be focused on raising in a sustainable, efficient, non-arbitrary and equitable way the minimum amount needed to maintain good quality public services and civil society. It’s not about using envy to right perceived wrongs.

Dabralor · 30/07/2024 18:32

Cou cil tax could do with a revision.
Instead of raising it, just re and everyone. Our house had work done on it before we bought it and therefore it went up a band when we moved in. Tbh it's crippling.

Yet, next door have done up their house yet pay half what we do because they haven't sold it yet. Doesn't seem fair.

PerfectYear321 · 30/07/2024 18:33

Capital Gains tax is an unfair tax IMHO. It doesn't take inflation into account. If your asset has gone up in value due to inflation it's a bit of a con to tax the increase in value. If you're a higher rate taxpayer it's even worse: you're basically losing money
