How lovely. Well enjoy, let’s hope the grass isn’t greener etc.

@HappiestSleeping

So far, their activities appear to make complete sense and are not knee jerk, which is good to see.

Im not an OAP so the winter fuel allowance doesn't affect me. Canny move announcing it on the hottest week of the year. But my god if the Tories did it MN would be ablaze with fury.

@ChilledOut79 - I agree that once you accept that education can be taxed you open the door to VAT being added to all sorts of things. Music/dance/drama lessons, private tutoring, sports clubs.

Agreed, they have set a dangerous precedent here which won't end with just private fees. They know this will appeal to the numbers as a policy, but wait until the rot begins to spread.

Every single suggestion on this thread could be summarised as “tax stuff more that I can’t, won’t or don’t have so only ‘other’ people pay more tax”.

People with no cars saying tax people with cars

People with small cars saying tax people with large cars

Boringly predictable race to the bottom. Tax should be focused on raising in a sustainable, efficient, non-arbitrary and equitable way the minimum amount needed to maintain good quality public services and civil society. It’s not about using envy to right perceived wrongs.

Agree completely.

@HarryLimeFoxtrot I don't for one moment think it would be a good idea, but I doubt that would stop the Labour government from considering it. Whilst they are Government loans they charge interest so the compounded interest is where they would make.

Reading the outpouring of posts here which promotes taxing those with nicer cars / homes etc. even more, demonstrates the level of entitlement which is a cancer to success in this country.

Why would the "other" people ever want to pay additional tax, when they can palm it off on anyone else they perceive has more.

I'm not referring to super wealthy, but middle to high income earners who already pay proportionately more than any other tax paying cohort....let's tax them even more because they have something you may not have. What ever happened to aspiration.

I haven't seen any post on MN where someone advocates for a universal income tax rate of say 40%....just a thought...but that would fund services no problem!

No thank you say those not in that bracket.....let's just pass the burden over to those net contributors already subsidising the net recipients.

I have an alternative plan.
Rather than paying already rich people more, often more than they could reasonably need, how about paying the poorest more?

I would recommend that women do not go to Dubai. Women in the UAE have been jailed for reporting rape.

So I take it from that you are happy to pay more tax yourself? So am I, once those with more money than me are taxed at the same kind of rate that I am in terms of total wealth.

Here we go I wondered how long before LL bashing started. Many say LL should not own more than 1 house. Others complain when LL's sell up. LL can never win.

It’s not landlord bashing. It’s just the state of the current situation. I’m saying renters pay less council tax so more renters can afford to rent rather than needing council help, and a rent cap by area to keep it that way.

And the UK allowed young white girls to be repeatedly raped by Asian gangs due to institutional racism. There are lots of examples of black/Asian women being let down in the UK too by the UK legal system. Dubai has significant issues, but the UK is no Nirvana.

I hope people are punished like buggery for voting in this lot.

Miley1967 · 30/07/2024 18:49

They should tax second home owners hugely. Especially those that then rent them to family members who claim Universal credit to pay the rent.

Its amazing how often "creating wealth" seems to involve taking money from people who have little and giving it to those who have more than they need.

Witchlite · 30/07/2024 18:55

I think inheritance tax. Remove extra nil rate residence band for homeowners and leave allowance at £325k so more people are sucked in.

I think a heist on pension funds (Gordon Brown style) because so few people notice it until it’s too late and they will be out of power by then.

I think redoing the Barnett formula to make it more fair to other areas eg Wales, Northern Ireland. It will be called a redistribution.

as there will now be tax on private schools, tutors, dance lessons, and extra curricular lessons will also attract Vat.

True, but on the other hand, my mum has an income into the higher tax bracket with her various pensions and investments. She doesn't need a fuel allowance. Neither do many like her.

RaininSummer · 30/07/2024 18:59

Tax on booze, tobacco, vapes, huge cars, UP foods, frequent flights would be good.

User135644 · 30/07/2024 18:59

They need to get a grip on law and order as the main priority. Make some improvement on the economy as the other. Otherwise they'll be hauled out in 5 years. Country is broken - Starmer got less votes than Corbyn and there was never huge enthusiasm for him. The Tories got punished for wrecking the country.

Can we be sure to add a significant tax on private jets and helicopters to the list.

Witchlite · 30/07/2024 19:01

I do think that there is absolutely no way they didn’t know about the holes in the economy and the shortfall seemed to rise by several billion from the original figures the audit produced. I think they were massaged to a worse case scenario.

the Labour team are either incompetent in not anticipating the funding gaps, or are being deceitful.

i do not think they are incompetent. However, they are politicians.

i think they are the best of a currently very bad lot, but it makes me so cross that they think we are that thick!

Maybe it would be a good idea to raise council tax for home owners, so that there is a differentiation between what renters pay and what home owners pay (speaking a a home owner I know how lucky I am). Graduated progressive rise depending on value of property.

I'm in a high council tax band, all the buildings on our street are high and the council refuse to change it. Flats aren't that big as there's a lot of unusable space, think books and crannies as it's an old building.

If the government do that it'll hit new buyers as much as anyone else.

What was the alternative though? The Conservatives have buggered the UK way more than this lot could ever do. Ultimately, they damaged the economy for decades to come so whoever got it, it would be challenging for us mere mortals.

Give it time. Once all the countryside in the south is under concrete and the north south divide widened there'll be some noise.

Yes I’d go for taxes on luxuries and wealth - so taxes added on more than one flight trip a year , whack taxes on ridiculous sized cars, increased council tax on luxury homes, increased capital gains and inheritance. Gap between the wealthy and those who are struggling needs to be hugely reduced.

I can’t see an across the board fuel duty rise but definitely I can see something for the larger cars .

More than one flight a year 🤣
It would be extortionate in admin costs, for a start.
There's also the problem that "don't tax us for our one holiday we made sacrifices for" forgets that there are plenty of families who could never afford even one flight a year. A bit like the tax on private school fees - a sacrifice for some, absolutely impossible for others.
