Southport - why do they keep saying a ‘Taylor Swift themed club’?

It’s really bothering me.

Is it because
a) the murder of 2 children and attempted murder and severe injury of 9 others isn’t newsworthy enough without involving Taylor Swift’s name?

b) Taylor Swift needs to suffer some guilt by association in the way Ariana Grande did with the bombing at her concert?

What’s the need or relevance? If it had been a 80’s music dance class would they keep saying that? Why not just say summer dance club and then focus on the children and adults who were hurt or killed - I can’t even imagine the devastation their families and the whole community must be suffering.

Anyone?

The rule of law is not "wishy washy liberalism". It's the most important British value I can think of.

You did jury service once so now you’re an expert. We all know the legal process thanks. People are bloody angry and you’re trying to put a lid on that anger.

Call him a youth, under-18, minor… but the repeated use of the word “boy” by some posters sounds not only one-sided but thoroughly distasteful given that this individual has murdered children.

Agree with you here

I’d prefer 17 year old male

I'm not trying to put a lid on anyone's anger. I'm informing you of the consequences of prejudicing a trial.

By your reasoning, MNHQ are also trying to put a lid on people's anger:

Hi all,
Apologies for removing this thread - we completely understand the instinct to want to talk about something so horrific. Overall, though, it became impossible to moderate as there was just too much speculation.

You did jury service once so now you’re an expert.

Two trials, actually, one of which collapsed because of what looked on the surface like a minor process error.

We all know the legal process thanks.

It's very clear that many people don't.

Cas112 · 30/07/2024 13:38

I think it's to highlight the age range of who attended op, stop being so ridiculous

Of course it would still matter if it wasn't a Taylor swift evenf

As I said above incels despise young girls & women looking up to a powerful, female role model such as Taylor Swift & Ariana Grande.
It's very relevant that the Taylor themed angle is reported.

Yes, that's what I mean about making misogyny a hate crime. It hadn't occurred to me before I read the thread, so thank you for pointing it out.

They practically are a Doctor of Laws! What would MN do without the input of a former juror?

In her press briefing last night, Chief Constable Serena Kennedy described it as a 'Taylor Swift themed dance class'.

The media has been warned by the police and Govt about how they report this event because the public response has to be managed.

Therefore the media are plating it doubly safe by parroting the way the Chief Constable described it.

They are quoting her statement verbatim in plenty of other aspects of their reporting.

Prawncow · 30/07/2024 13:40

There’s going to be so much evidence. Eye witnesses, camera footage, forensic evidence. The age of the suspect means that they’ll have anonymity. I don’t think there’s any risk to due process because people are talking about this horrific attack online.

This bothers me too OP. Adding Taylor Swifts name seems irrelevant. It could have just been reported as a 'children's dace class'

I was looking on Google Street View for the area. This poster made me wonder if the venue has something to do with pole dancing. Does anyone local know?

If so, I suspect there is nothing seedy about the venue, it'll just be a USP a gym/dance studio uses to attract custom. But I could see why the nature if the venue wouldn't be highlighted.

They offer pole dancing fitness classes. the witness whose distressing voicemail message has been doing the rounds on social media, had attended such a class there.

A Taylor Swift themed club is going to be made up of small girls. He’s targeted it because it’s a Taylor Swift themed event. Because it will be full of small girls. He’s not happened upon it. He’s not walked into an event at random. He’s seen a Taylor Swift event for young girls advertised, and travelled there with a knife with the intention of harming these girls. That’s why they keep mentioning it. I doubt very much he would have targeted an Iron Maiden event.

Edited

I doubt very much he would have targeted an Iron Maiden event.

Oh I don't know, in Paris at the Bataclan attack they targetted a Queens of the Stone Age concert.

Evil monsters aren't really that discriminating in their targets for hate

The first victim has be named and photographed. The parents said ..".their princess had been taken by a 'despicable human being.' "

All credit for not being scared to say how they feel.

@Midlifecryses I don't want to contribute to misinformation but I've heard from reputable sources why they understand he did it and that would be a good place to start.

It's not actually something I've seen reported anywhere yet so the police could really defuse some building tensions by explaining it. People will start kicking off and a lot of those people won't have the interests of the children and their families at heart they're just looking for any excuse. There's already calls for people to gather in certain places later to protest.

I also don't think he should get any anonymity at all but understand the laws going to protect him for now so more context is needed.

Yes, so have I. I don't think explaining would defuse tensions at all!

However I do think that he should be named and tried as an adult, and named at his trial.

if we tried the Bulger killers as adults (which we did) aged 9 and 10 then we can definitely do the same for this man.

Trials do collapse because of prejudicial coverage.

Remember Levi's Bellfield.

www.standard.co.uk/panewsfeeds/bellfield-articles-prejudicial-7848174.html

Sir John Thomas and Mr Justice Tugendhat heard at the start of contempt of court proceedings brought against the two papers by the Attorney General that, as a result of the "totality" of the publicity, the Old Bailey jury was discharged from returning a verdict on that count.

That’s for the racists looking to score points from a tragedy. There’s a reason that the information that has been released pointed out that the suspect is U.K. born.

Racism is such a handy insult to throw around. But isn't it more tribalism?

A quick look at the difference between our national responses to ISIL's invasion of Syria and Russia's invasion of Ukraine will tell you that we empathise more with the people of other white-majority nations. I don't recall Homes For Syrians having anything like the press coverage and traction and Govt backing that Homes For Ukrainians had. So skin colour is definitely a factor in how we treat others.

Take female genital mutilation for example. Is it actually racism to say 'hey, those values don't belong here'?

No, it's not racist to say that FGM doesn't belong on Earth, never mind the UK. Hibo Wardere, a Somalian immigrant, does excellent work combating FGM, demonstrating that Somalians do not have monolithic groupthink on this.

Hibo Wardere is amazing. It's so terrible that she had to fight not only against FGM but also against members of her community who regard her as a traitor. The amount of abuse and threats she gets is something else.

I highly recommend following her on X if you don't already. Utterly inspirational, incredibly brave.

Have you ever heard of sarcasm?

Most people will never come into contact with the criminal justice system. When I served as a juror, a lot of stuff I thought I knew turned out to be myths. I don't claim to be some kind of legal expert, but I do relay on what I learned during jury service. I don't understand why people feel the desire to mock me for doing this.

One of the things we were not allowed to do was go looking on social media for rumours about the case, because we were only allowed to base our verdict on what we were shown in court. If it becomes impossible to get jurors who've not been prejudiced by social media, the trial can't happen.
