Southport - why do they keep saying a ‘Taylor Swift themed club’?

It’s really bothering me.

Is it because
a) the murder of 2 children and attempted murder and severe injury of 9 others isn’t newsworthy enough without involving Taylor Swift’s name?

b) Taylor Swift needs to suffer some guilt by association in the way Ariana Grande did with the bombing at her concert?

What’s the need or relevance? If it had been a 80’s music dance class would they keep saying that? Why not just say summer dance club and then focus on the children and adults who were hurt or killed - I can’t even imagine the devastation their families and the whole community must be suffering.

Anyone?

I feel like it highlights the youthful innocence of those there, like it makes it more painful and ridiculous.

ssd · 30/07/2024 09:01

God love them. That poster for the class looks great fun. They would all have been excited to go.

What a horrible world we live in sometimes.

HansHolbein · 30/07/2024 08:47

Many incels hate Taylor Swift and call the young children that love her ‘mini foids’ that will grow up to be ‘sluts and whores’.

That is so utterly depressing.

pinkdelight · 30/07/2024 09:02

I'd also imagine the press will mention it often as it will massively increase the amount of clicks on the article and boost readership. Cynical but sadly true.

Emily1583 · 30/07/2024 09:03

It's just the facts of the setting for this horrific attack.

WetBandits · 30/07/2024 09:03

Came to say it highlights the innocence of the victims and what was supposed to be a fun, wholesome event but seems many posters have realised the same.

HappierTimesAhead · 30/07/2024 09:03

Olympics2024 · 30/07/2024 08:36

I suspect because they have very few details.

I think this is it. They have little to report so they report the details they do know.

YouveGotAFastCar · 30/07/2024 09:04

Relevance.

There will be thousands of parents who know their children would have been so keen to go to that type of thing.

Taylor Swift events have established a reputation for feeling like a "safe place", for fans to go and enjoy themselves and be accepted for who they are.

But also, that's the event that was happening. If it'd been a basketball camp, they'd report it as that. If it'd been a Lebron James basketball camp, they'd have used his name.

ParkerVille · 30/07/2024 09:04

Livelaughlurgy · 30/07/2024 08:39

I think it just highlights the innocence and wholesomeness of the event.

I think it's this.

nameynamenamenamename · 30/07/2024 09:05

It’s relevant because it almost certainly goes to motive of the attacker, who took a taxi to the venue.

It wasn’t a random attack. It was, in my view, most likely a misogynistic hate crime.

LlynTegid · 30/07/2024 09:06

I was unaware that some incels have a hatred of a strong woman who has achieved success on largely her own terms.

I think the nature of the event has some relevance. If it had been say a netball training session I am sure that would have been mentioned.

I hope those who have been injured make a full recovery.

Emily1583 · 30/07/2024 09:06

HansHolbein · 30/07/2024 08:47

Many incels hate Taylor Swift and call the young children that love her ‘mini foids’ that will grow up to be ‘sluts and whores’.

Sigh. We simply don't know the ideology behind the attack at the moment.

Pterodacty1 · 30/07/2024 09:06

This bothers me too OP. Adding Taylor Swifts name seems irrelevant. It could have just been reported as a 'children's dace class'

I was looking on Google Street View for the area. This poster made me wonder if the venue has something to do with pole dancing. Does anyone local know?

If so, I suspect there is nothing seedy about the venue, it'll just be a USP a gym/dance studio uses to attract custom. But I could see why the nature if the venue wouldn't be highlighted.

ShakeUpYourTiredEyes · 30/07/2024 09:08

Because some people have an issue with women like Taylor swift and girls having such admiration for women.

Maybe because it should not have happened anywhere but there will have been 100s and 100s of kids in southport yesterday. A fair, a prom, a beach, other summer clubs, cinema, Soft plays, busy high street(s) parks all near by but the animal in question chose the place where he did and it was at a taylor swift themed event. There's children, parents, staff in that building daily and he chose to go there when that was on may not be of any significance but also could well be.

EasternStandard · 30/07/2024 09:08

Not much can be said about who and why and it’s so horrific so details like this are shared

OdeToBarney · 30/07/2024 09:08

Ellerby83 · 30/07/2024 08:43

I think it's relevant. Who would be at at Taylor Swift themed event - girls. He was deliberately targeting girls.

This. Fucking men, I just despair.

RedToothBrush · 30/07/2024 09:08

mummylife123 · 30/07/2024 08:44

It makes me think she was part of his motive somehow- ie he specifically sought out a Taylor Swift themed event. If so, it's very likely to be an incel.

They've ruled out terrorism though.

Incels are terrorists.

LoudSnoringDog · 30/07/2024 09:11

To give detail on the incident.

If they said "at an event..." people would be naturally curious as to what type of event

OdeToBarney · 30/07/2024 09:11

RedToothBrush · 30/07/2024 09:08

Come on now, are you really being so obtuse? You know full well what was meant by them ruling out terrorism was ruling out terrorism in the "traditional" sense. Likely to avoid any potential violence related to race and/or religion.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 30/07/2024 09:13

RedToothBrush · 30/07/2024 09:08

They've ruled out terrorism though.

Incels are terrorists.

They have changed that now. They are saying anti terrorist officers are involved and its not being treated as terrorism ' at this moment'. It does sound like that group was targeted. The attacker was originally from Cardiff so had no links to the area then travelled by taxi specifically to this group. I agree the TS reference is relevant, as he targeted girls and/ or Taylor Swft fans.

buffyajp2 · 30/07/2024 09:13

MeouwCat · 30/07/2024 08:45

The suspect is a boy of 17, not yet a man

Only legally. Certainly not physically otherwise the instructors would have been able to overpower him if he was'just a boy'. I find this a bizarre comment to be honest as it has no relevance as to whether he hates Taylor Swift or not and certainly doesnt preclude it as a motive.

MeouwCat · 30/07/2024 09:15

The suspect is 17, from Banks and born in Walse. Banks looks like a tiny little village. The locals will know his identity. How are the authorities going to keep it out of the media?

Pole dance fitness is a dance class. He didn't live in the area, so it's likely the children's class was targeted. Otherwise why not turn up to the adult pole dancing class?

Combattingthemoaners · 30/07/2024 09:17

It probably explains why the victims are girls. Yes I know boys can go too but the majority would have been girls.

Gingernaut · 30/07/2024 09:18

Because it wasn't just any play group, summer activity or kids' club

It was a specific event, themed around a pop star with a massive following of women and girls, with a good chance it was filled with just or mainly little girls

17 years is plenty old enough to be an 'incel' Tate follower
