Southport - why do they keep saying a ‘Taylor Swift themed club’?

SandrasNewDo · 30/07/2024 08:35

It’s really bothering me.

Is it because
a) the murder of 2 children and attempted murder and severe injury of 9 others isn’t newsworthy enough without involving Taylor Swift’s name?

b) Taylor Swift needs to suffer some guilt by association in the way Ariana Grande did with the bombing at her concert?

What’s the need or relevance? If it had been a 80’s music dance class would they keep saying that? Why not just say summer dance club and then focus on the children and adults who were hurt or killed - I can’t even imagine the devastation their families and the whole community must be suffering.

Anyone?

Some people will remember the machete attack at a Wolverhampton nursery school in 1996. The assailant was paranoid schizophrenic and remanded to a secure mental hospital indefinitely (I imagine he is probably still there)

I'm drawing no eqivalence with the appalling event yesterday because at this stage NONE of us know the background/motivation, but I can only imagine the furore of speculation/theorising/racism and racial tension that would have surrounded it had social media existed back then.

I was just reading on line what happened and got very tearful. Now it has been announced that a third girl has died aged just 9. Just heartbreaking.

So upset to hear a third little girl has lost her life at the hands of this evil murderer.

@dottiehens "What should be done is for the government to start putting laws in place. Do not you think murders are on the up? "

What laws? And no, I'm pretty sure murders are not up.

What should be done is for the government to start putting laws in place. Do not you think murders are on the up? Unless they did not report it before because every day there are horrific murders committed all over the country. It is always known to police with MH problems. Why? Or should be accept this as the new normal? Crime also on the up? People disappearing. So you think nothing can be done. This country was safe and now features like a third world country for crime and murders. We also a small one so it should not be that hard, I refuse to believe nothing can be done.

Edited

What laws would you like?

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 30/07/2024 12:22

Swifties have raised fifty grand through a FB page already?
That's mental, how many of them are there, I'm totally out of touch with pop culture.

Sassenach85 · 30/07/2024 12:23

That is admirable to raise money but we need another way to focus our intentions. I just don’t know what.

PleaseGoDontGoAgain · 30/07/2024 12:18

We don't know who the two critical adults are. No information at all about them.

It was reported in the Telegraph that it was a young woman who was running the event and also that a 63 year old man who was not involved in the event was also stabbed when he went to try and stop the man who did it.

Brianna Ghey's killers were 16 at the time, and named.

Why is this animal exempt?

I think he has to be charged and then a judge decides. IIRC Brianna’s killers were named after they were found guilty. Interests of a fair trial and all that.

The suspect is a boy of 17, not yet a man

Oh come on… legally he might not have reached adulthood, but the term boy somehow indicates he is no wholly responsible for his actions. This man is old enough to leave school, get a job, get married…. He’s a man.

Creepingivy · 30/07/2024 12:26

oldmanandtheangel · 30/07/2024 12:20

It IS relevant..he was certainly triggered by an advert or poster....an attack on young females like the Manchester bombings

He got a taxi to the venue (refused to pay the fare). He went there with knowledge of the event, with intention & armed. This evil murderer knew exactly what he was doing targeting little girls who were enjoying their summer camp. He murdered 3 little girls.
Praying to God that the others still in a critical condition pull through 🙏

@MaidOfAle I’m not very good at linking but the details of the 17yo family background. Didn’t think that has been officially confirmed

I stop people like you are part of the problem or deluded. Hopefully your kids are safe from all off this madness. Or you are hard left on denial?

Yes, I stated I understood they can't just release the details of a 17 year old. It's bullshit and needs to be changed but I understand the current law.

Curiosity and noisiness?! Not fear?

There is some info now on the bbc website which has been released by the police.

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 12:31

What a surprise, far right activists have shared false information on X and named a person that the police say is not true. The actual suspect was born in Wales not an asylum seeker. Why do people use a horrible tragedy to spread their own agenda?

As for naming, as the person of interest is under 18, only a judge can allow the person to be named. Also innocent until proven guilty is afforded to all, even those committing heinous acts of violence, the mark of a civil society.

My heart goes out to the individuals, the families and those who responded to the incident.

FarmFlowers · 30/07/2024 12:31

Well, when Keir Starmer gives 16 year olds the vote, this stupidity of calling a hairy 17 year old a child will have to stop.

Anyway, why are we letting children drive cars? That's because no-one with more brain cells than a lemon pip, believes a 17 year old is a child.

Time the legal definition caught up with life.

crumblingschools · 30/07/2024 12:32

@MaidOfAle apologies, family background has now been given

teatimeplease · 30/07/2024 12:33

@Pip2345 that doesn't trump how the police have to handle it for the ongoing investigation.

Agreed

From BBC:

Unverified rumours about the attack circulate onlinepublished at 12:17

By Shayan Sardarizadeh
Almost immediately after the deadly stabbing attack in Southport, baseless rumours began spreading online.

While police and emergency services were still responding to the attack, a widely shared LinkedIn post claimed without evidence that "a migrant" was responsible.

But the most viral source of rumours so far has been a report published on an obscure US-based website which claims to cover "breaking news".

The report falsely claims that that the 17-year old suspect is an "asylum seeker" named "Ali Al-Shakati", who "arrived in the UK by boat last year".

Merseyside Police has confirmed that the suspect was born in Cardiff, and has yet to identify the 17-year-old.

The report also adds that the suspect was "on the MI6 watch list", despite the fact that it is MI5, not MI6, that deals with domestic counter-terrorism cases.
The name "Ali Al-Shakati" has since been widely shared online in posts viewed by millions.

Some other outlets, including Russia's RT news channel, have also reported this name, citing the US-based website.

Other variations of the report, including the claim that the suspect was a "Channel migrant", have also been widely circulated.

nameynamenamenamename · 30/07/2024 09:05

It’s relevant because it almost certainly goes to motive of the attacker, who took a taxi to the venue.

It wasn’t a random attack. It was, in my view, most likely a misogynistic hate crime.

This was the action of a teen, not even deemed an adult yet legally. That is absolutely shocking, if you are correct, which I'm afraid you are. I suppose we must be grateful for the small mercy he didn't have access to guns.

Actually, the homicide rate has been falling fairly steadily since 2003. This country is still safe.

Mental health doesn't cause murder. If it did, we'd see more women committing murders. Male entitlement causes murder. Men don't like being told "no" and they reach for weapons and fists and feet to punish.

@dottiehens "What should be done is for the government to start putting laws in place. Do not you think murders are on the up? "

What laws? And no, I'm pretty sure murders are not up.

The reason you think murders are not up is because , unless there is some newsworthy aspect, murders are no longer reported in the media. They might be in their local media but not in the national media.

Sadly, murders are on the up-what is on the down is the fact they're not reported and the fact we are no longer shocked by them.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
