Just made a fool of myself at interview...I'm so upset

Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

I honestly came home feeling so low.
I had been revising questions all week with my STAR responses.
I am kicking myself for even applying
After years of administrative roles I thought I would try something new.
I took all my gcse/a level info with me and they didn't even ask.

It was just so intimidating

I honestly thought it would be a interview with questions
Then you would start and shadow a attendant whilst you found your feet

sometimes its also best to study the skills necessary for the role too or at least have some idea about them in case of practical examples like this, seems they wanted an expericend candidate that could complete x tasks straight away. All the best and positivity

Don’t worry once I ‘rode’ out of an interview setting on a massive umbrella whilst pretending it was a broom when they told me there was no on site parking. I have no idea why. Nerves I think! I didn’t get the job! It
sounds like you were more composed and it was them with the problem!

Ace!! 😂😂😂😂

I recently withdrew a job application....it was for the position of school cook in a village primary school....for my interview they wanted me to plan a 3 week menu including dietary needs and it had to be less than £2.53 per child per day....a ridiculous amount of work just to get an interview...oh and the job paid £12 an hour.

Ive just re read the email....it was a 3 week menu including gluten free...dairy free and vegetarian options....main course and dessert for £2.55 a day...utterly ridiculous !!!!

Abysmal

Find somewhere to leave a review like Glassdoor

Why wouldn't they be prepared to train someone new?

It's not a skill like cooking or hairdressing . It's just bed making

Silly hiring strategy

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 30/07/2024 06:29

I would bet there is a very high turnover of housekeeping staff (because they treat them like shit) which is why they put minimal time into recruitment and training. You dodged a bullet.

Thanks everyone
Feel a bit better today
Although keep thinking "you didn't get a job because you couldn't make a bed"

Have I really got that little potential ?
That I can't even be trained to make beds

Don’t fill yourself with doubt over it. It’s a them thing, not a you thing.
I once didn’t get a job because they didn’t think I had the necessary skills to put cheese on a pizza base. 🤷‍♀️ That was the reason they gave to me on feedback. Clearly they just had someone else in mind, same as your bunch.

balletflats · 30/07/2024 11:49

You are probably overqualified for the role. You sound like you have lots of potential. Keep going!

Yalta · 30/07/2024 12:25

This reminds me of the multiple choice questionnaire Tesco wanted people to fill in when applying for a job

The questions were designed in a way to weed out those people applying who didnt already have a family member or friend working there already

I know one question was posted on here and a poster who was a Tesco employee explained what the answer was and it involved knowing about a secret drawer in the shelving units

How was anyone who didn’t have someone who worked at Tesco to tell them the answers supposed to know about secret drawers

Yes it’s ridiculous. I learnt it on the job. It only takes a couple of beds before you’ve got the hang of it.

No it’s not you. They didn’t want to train you up. I’ve been turned down for very low paid jobs that have made me think, ‘really?’, especially considering in the past I’ve worked with film people and newspaper people. I recently didn’t get a job working in a family type pub. 🤷‍♀️

Op that's not true at all, a 100 people will have 100s of DIFFERENT skills among each other. We may associate cleaning and tidying as being basic skills that everyone has, but they're not. I am hopeless at cleaning and constantly got told off for it when I worked at a cafe, but I speak 3 languages, am good at playing sports, good at teaching (what I do now), can code in 5 coding languages etc.

If anything it sounds like you are overqualified and should be applying for other jobs.

No way is it that.

The point is , you weren't trained to make a bed. They wanted it done a specific way and didn't show you. This makes no sense.

I've been trained with hospital corners and it's not hard but if someone had thrown a flat sheet at me in an interview with no warning when I was expecting questions on my work history etc I'd never have guessed it right. Of course you can make a bed. And 100000x more.

pointlessopportunity · 31/07/2024 07:31

@willWillSmithsmith

Of course. I did this work as a school girl. Someone showed me the ropes on day one. It doesn't require a lot of learning
