Just made a fool of myself at interview...I'm so upset

Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

I would be sending a Tweet to the Hilton calling this out ! Appalling treatment

Me too!
I would be fuming 😡

Ive conducted numerous interviews. Their behaviour towards you was extremely unprofessional. I think you need to write to the head office and tell them about your experience OP. Don’t let them get away with it.

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 18:15

I'm not sure if this is just how housekeeping interviews work
Maybe as I'm not used to them

I’ve interviewed lots of people and had excruciating interviews myself (when I could feel everything going wrong) and believe me they are in the wrong here not you. They should have told you the format of the assessment (that it would include a practical element) and if they are offering training then any practical element should take that into account, perhaps giving you the Hilton approved bed making instructions and asking you to follow them. And they absolutely shouldn’t be making their feelings clear while you were doing the assessment - you really shouldn’t be able to tell what the assessor thinks.

I can only agree with others that you’ve had a lucky escape.

Hold your head up. You don’t ever need to see those people again.

MaltipooMama · 29/07/2024 18:17

Oh my god what a bunch of arseholes! Don't worry you haven't made a fool of yourself at all, them on the other hand...

Gettingannoyednow · 29/07/2024 18:18

You have dodged a bullet. Imagine actually having to work with them. Hope the next interview is better x

catwithflowers · 29/07/2024 18:18

You have nothing at all to be embarrassed about. They sound dreadful and don't deserve you. Best of luck with future interviews. 🌺

Agree. What an awful advert. Nasty bitchy women - be glad you didn’t get the job.
Pour a glass of something and look for something else tomorrow.

TrivialProblem · 29/07/2024 17:58

Don’t beat yourself up about it. They sound like they would have been awful to work for.

If you wanted to, you could maybe email their HR and suggest that future interviews need to take account of the fact that they are stating that training will be given rather than expecting applicants to know their procedures already. But you’re under no obligation to do that and it’s their own fault that they’re potentially missing out on some great hard workers.

Onwards and upwards. You will find a better place to work. I’m sorry you had to go through that. All the best in your job hunt 🌼

This. They sound like cunts, and I'd give their manager feedback. Knobs.

ginasevern · 29/07/2024 18:21

OP, I feel angry on your behalf. That was completely wrong on every level and I wouldn't be surprised if it was deliberate. I reckon there's some internal politics going on behind the scenes. They've probably already got someone lined up, someone the head housekeeper favours. Please put it out of your mind and be grateful they declined you. Imagine working in that vipers nest.

Lippylemon · 29/07/2024 18:22

this is NOT your fault, this is them. Don’t let this dishearten you. Next time you could always ask for more information on the application process and the format if you are asked in

Kittybelle123 · 29/07/2024 18:25

Flowers you really have dodged a bullet and, as others have said, this is ALL on them. I would absolutely be emailing the HR department / hotel manager - whilst this be the "norm" for how they interview it is just wrong. Call it fate - the right job is waiting and you have dodged a bullet with this one. I hope you can find something with people who make you feel good about yourself Flowers

opalescented · 29/07/2024 18:26

I don't see why you're embarrassed. You've nothing to be embarrassed about. They don't like how you made the bed and don't see potential to train you - perhaps they wanted someone who could make beds super neatly but took a while or something who knows. It's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Were they actually "shooting daggers at you" or were they wondering why you kept looking at them?

What's with the sexist insults?

VimFuego101 · 29/07/2024 18:28

I would be impressed at someone showing up early, I have no idea why they were rude about that. Sounds like you had a lucky escape from working in a really unpleasant working environment tbh.

Then they shouldn't have said training given and should have at least asked OP what prior experience if any, she had. I agree she shouldn't feel embarrassed for their failures, but I don't agree with your take on it.

Don't be embarrassed. They sound like cunts. That is not a way to conduct an interview and it sounds like you have dodged a bullet working for them.

This

unbelievablescenes · 29/07/2024 18:30

OP aim higher. This sounds like you are WAY overqualified for the role and have turned up prepared for a promoted post, not a step down to a skivvy. Of course you flunked the interview, you shouldn't have been there in the first place with your skill set. Have a good think about your next move, interviews will go much better when they're for jobs that are appropriate for you. Good luck x

I don't see why they needed to know her previous experience they just needed to know how she makes a bed

loobylou10 · 29/07/2024 18:31

I'm another one who would be letting their HR and social media know about this. Disgusting.

unbelievablescenes · 29/07/2024 18:31

I don't mean that as in the job is as a skivvy but they'd have treated you like a skivvy. Housekeepers work very hard and have their own skill set ✌🏼

Because I can guarantee the way you make a bed at home will vary to the way beds in hotels are made. It can vary from hotel to hotel too!!

For any role in housekeeping, service etc. with Hilton, you get tested first and, if you pass the test, interviewed second.
