Just made a fool of myself at interview...I'm so upset

Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

It's a blessing. What a bunch of wankers

VividQuoter · 29/07/2024 19:45

mumedu · 29/07/2024 18:40

Even so, the tone was wrong and the atmosphere was wrong from the start. I would email HR.

ShouldIbeLeftWithLess · 29/07/2024 19:45

I would be sending a Tweet to the Hilton calling this out ! Appalling treatment

This. They won't know this is going on and will put a stop to it

BiscuityBoyle · 29/07/2024 19:46

They sound dreadful. You are better off out of it.
Making a bed in a hotel is very different to a home bed. What would have been better would be if they had sent you a video and said that they wanted you to watch that then show how you can complete it.

VividQuoter · 29/07/2024 19:46

Allthislovelygreen · 29/07/2024 18:45

They know exactly what kind of housekeeping staff they're looking for - vulnerable people with limited English skills with lots of experience turning around rooms in impossibly short times for minimum wage.

I imagine they rolled their eyes because they could tell you weren't that (maybe your CV they'd seen beforehand?).

They treat housekeeping staff appallingly, you dodged a bullet there until housekeepers form a proper union

you just stated truth

whateveryouwantmetosay · 29/07/2024 19:48

Sounds like you dodged a bullet working for judgemental cunts, OP.

Holidaysrule · 29/07/2024 19:48

Op, those miserable fuckers very obviously had no training at all in management or interview techniques. Bunch of jobsworth, and a lucky swerve in my opinion. Onwards and upwards for you! Xxx

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 19:49

@VividQuoter she said they pay min wage
Even tho she wishes if was more apparently

Thank your lucky stars the assholes showed themselves straight away.

Imagine having to work with them ☹️

saturnspinkhoop · 29/07/2024 19:53

I also agree that you’ve had a lucky escape. You did nothing wrong. They behaved really badly. Onwards and upwards!

Despair1 · 29/07/2024 19:54

Strawberryshortcake14 · 29/07/2024 17:56

That sounds horrendous, and like you were set up to fail. It's definitely not something you should feel bad about, they were awful to you.

Totally agree. Most people wouldn't know how to make a hotel bed unless they were shown how to! Very bad behaviour by the staff. If there is an opportunity to follow this up with a complaint, I would pursue. Did you hear about the job from an agency/recruitment firm? If so, I would take it up with them. That behaviour is totally unfair.Take care

Good idea

Persiancouscous · 29/07/2024 18:44

Are you white British?

I don't understand what ethnicity has to do with bed making ?

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 29/07/2024 19:57

They sound shite, bullet well and truly dodged.
I've had a shit interview before. It was a role in the company I already work for. Turns out I was wayyy under qualified to the extent I had to wonder why I got the interview 😂 they gave me an excel and a few questions to answer and I hadn't a scooby doo of how to find the info. Thank goodness it was on teams to make it a little less embarrassing 😂

Yousay55 · 29/07/2024 19:57

That’s an appalling way to have treated you. It sounds like a lucky escape for you.

MargaretThursday · 29/07/2024 19:59

If that's the sort of thing you'd like to get into then it must be the season for those jobs going. I'd have expected it to be earlier in the season, but maybe not.

I'm sure I saw one earlier today about having an interview at one of the other chains. And a couple of weeks ago there was the one who'd lied on their cv claiming they had experience at travel lodge because they were applying for Premier Inn (or other way round) and only had admin experience.

Actually maybe the interviewers saw that thread and thought they'd start of by checking if people really had experience rather than just saying they do.

Anyway, there's obviously a number advertising currently if that is anything to go by.

Zebedee999 · 29/07/2024 20:06

Make a complaint to their HR.

willWillSmithsmith · 29/07/2024 20:09

I’ve done accommodation cleaning (to 5* standard) and they sound awful. It’s not you, it’s them. I would have been very nervous and caught off guard too.

Willmafrockfit · 29/07/2024 20:11

that is shocking.
plenty of awful people around
hopefully the travel job will be better.
i think this was too much of a change for you

opalescented · 29/07/2024 20:12

unbelievablescenes · 29/07/2024 18:46

@opalescented I did clarify upthread that that wasn't aimed at people in similar roles. The op is overqualified and should aim higher. I've acknowledged housekeepers are hard working and have different skills. Doesn't mean the op can't go for a job with higher pay and better conditions.

The gcse's and a levels don't mean she's some how "overqualified". Loads of people go for jobs that don't use their qualifications.

InSpainTheRain · 29/07/2024 20:13

I think you should be pleased you didn't join them. If it was that bad then they are horrible - perhaps they want their mate in there - so just put it behind you.

Choochoo21 · 29/07/2024 20:15

I would ask for feedback and CC the boss in.

I would ask why you were turned down for the position after making the bed, even though it was a trainee position.

Please do not feel embarrassed.
They are the ones who should feel embarrassed about this.
They sound vile.

fetchacloth · 29/07/2024 20:16

Think of this experience as dodging a bullet. Would you really want to work for an employer that treats their staff in such a unsupportive way?
I would be running a mile 😉

opalescented · 29/07/2024 20:16

mumedu · 29/07/2024 18:35

I am always early for job interviews. It's professional. I like to be calm and settled before I am called in. Font understand why the daggers. It's perfectly fine to be 15 minutes early.

I'd argue that 15 minutes is too long. 5 minutes - perfect. 10 mins OK. Any longer than that and you're best off going to the loo or having a wander outside before letting them know you're available.
