Just made a fool of myself at interview...I'm so upset

Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

I'm not sure if this is just how housekeeping interviews work
Maybe as I'm not used to them
Always used to customer service

Honestly this is not normal. I've worked in housekeeping in a few hotels and not once did I have an 'interview' like that. This is absolutely not on you to feel bad about. That whole experience just sounds weird and if I was you I'd feel like I'd dodged a mega bullet.

Onwards and upwards OP.

Moltenpink · 29/07/2024 18:33

You did not make a fool of yourself. Bullet dodged there. Try a more independent hotel brand maybe?

Summerflames · 29/07/2024 18:33

opalescented · 29/07/2024 18:30

I don't see why they needed to know her previous experience they just needed to know how she makes a bed

Plus your comment, they didn't see the potential to train her. How hard can it be to learn how to make a bed to their standard? I don't mean that disrespectfully to OP but you're making it sound like brain surgery. I'm sure OP is more than capable of learning how to make a bed their way.

This is on them, not you. You are having a shame attack, but you have absolutely no reason to feel embarrassed. They should have interviewed you and then decide if they would train you up.

Witchbitch20 · 29/07/2024 18:34

I’d email the contact details you have and let them know how unprofessional the majority of staff you met were.

Bunch of cows!

opalescented · 29/07/2024 18:34

Summerflames · 29/07/2024 18:31

Because I can guarantee the way you make a bed at home will vary to the way beds in hotels are made. It can vary from hotel to hotel too!!

Yes I'm not thick I do know that. But they'll be able to tell from how she makes a bed if they want to train her to make beds "their way"

Vrunkydunk · 29/07/2024 18:35

You did not make a fool of yourself.

They were horrible. You dodged a bullet. I'd definitely send a tweet or email the CEO. It's not on for any kind of interview.

mumedu · 29/07/2024 18:35

I am always early for job interviews. It's professional. I like to be calm and settled before I am called in. Font understand why the daggers. It's perfectly fine to be 15 minutes early.

This makes zero sense.

Cheeseandcrackers40 · 29/07/2024 18:37

They should be embarrassed not you - they knew from your application you hadn't been a housekeeper before so this is just really out of order. I mean who on earth would know how they liked it if they hadn't done it before.

I once failed an interview so badly that I started laughing at the questions because all I could say was - I'm sorry I'm not sure. I was expecting a skills based interview and they asked me loads of technical questions instead (very old school). Anyway I didn't get it obviously but I did receive a really rude email telling me I wasn't employable! I just thought, I'm so glad I don't have to work with you!!

Sometimes 'failures' are actually blessings in disguise. I know you feel shit right now but I bet something better will come along x

Summerflames · 29/07/2024 18:36

This makes zero sense.

If I see someone complete a process in my job even if its not done how we'd do it I can see of there is potential

ACynicalDad · 29/07/2024 18:39

Interviews are two way, do they want you and do you want them, do you want them after that, if not you've achieved a good outcome.

Demonhunter · 29/07/2024 18:39

Sounds like they already had someone lined up for the job (possibly someone they know) so set you up to fail. I'd hazard a guess you aren't the only one it happened to.

mumedu · 29/07/2024 18:40

LondonPapa · 29/07/2024 18:32

For any role in housekeeping, service etc. with Hilton, you get tested first and, if you pass the test, interviewed second.

Even so, the tone was wrong and the atmosphere was wrong from the start. I would email HR.

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 18:40

@StrawberryPavlova did you have to make a bed at the interview ?

OP posts:
Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 29/07/2024 18:40

That sounds 😖. You've dodged a bullet there my friend.
No need to be embarrassed as they ALL sound totally unprofessional. Hospitality industry indeed😂

Georgethecat1 · 29/07/2024 18:41

Sounds like they did you a favour and you dodged a bullet!

VotesForWomen · 29/07/2024 18:41

You can hold your head up high - you were professional, and absolutely none of the staff you met gave you the same courtesy. Of course your face doesn't fit there!

Thank your lucky stars for the lucky escape.

Xelda · 29/07/2024 18:42

Tells you everything you need to know about them, you've definitely dodged a bullet. Best of luck with your job hunting, you deserve better!

Cosyfire · 29/07/2024 18:42

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 29/07/2024 18:02

That is very poor on their part.
You don't know the background to it so do not take it personally.
Maybe they are being forced to take on someone rather than be paid overtime.
Maybe they have a friend lined up for the role.
Maybe they othered you as being professional (arriving early isn't a sin ffs).
Their loss OP.
Fuck 'em.
Brew Cake

This.

Times a thousand other stupid reasons that you might know nothing about.
Not your problem. Be proud that you put yourself out there.

What do you mean how hard can it be? Clearly they thought it would be too hard. It's not brain surgery but it's certainly not easy for everyone to do and in the numbers required

Halfemptyhalfling · 29/07/2024 18:43

I would email the company and complain about them wasting your time. If they needed/wanted someone already trained in hotel bed making that needed to be clearly stated. Sometimes when this sort of thing happens they have an internal candidate but have to advertise for EDI reasons

MMUmum · 29/07/2024 18:43

You absolutely do not want to work for these people, they don't know what they are doing! No interview skills, no management skills, totally unprofessional. My guess is that they have already employed someone, probably a friend or relative of a current employee and you were set up to fail, you absolutely dodged a bullet. If it's a major chain let HR know of your experience

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 18:44

I'm gonna hopefully put it behind me
I have an interview Friday at hays travel so I'm gonna really study for that.
Hopefully I will do okay and be prepared

@StrawberryPavlova did you have to make a bed at the interview ?

No absolutely not! Learning the hotel's method of making a bed (and there's lots of different ways they like to do it!) has always been part of the training after I've got the job.
