Just made a fool of myself at interview...I'm so upset

Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

Contact hr being told you are to early is ridiculous! Plus having had similar interviews they tend to show you normally I think! They can hardly be rolling in applications??

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 20:18

Tbh I was that nervous I think even if they had showed me I still would of panicked having all of them watching me.
It was like the X factor honestly

Are you the same poster who said in your application you had previous experience in a travel lodge even though you haven't? If so maybe they knew? But regardless they sound like pricks, lucky escape!

Oh I do feel very angry to read this. It says nothing about you, just what a bunch of complete * those women are.
100% slap it all over social media everywhere you can. These big companies need to realise that it is NOT ok to treat people like this.
You sound lovely and you deserve much better than that.
Good luck without job hunting and don't be brought down by these 'people'.

Branster · 29/07/2024 20:22

What an awful experience for you OP.
In a way it works it your favour. You'd have hated working with those women who sound very unpleasant.
Don't feel embarrassed, they set you up to fail on purpose, did not make you feel welcome at all. They probably already have someone lined up for this job but they had to prove it was open for applicants.
Good luck with your next interview!

anxioussister · 29/07/2024 20:24

Holy hell. I’ve hired lots of people, both household staff for our family and teaching staff at work - I am horrified that you were treated like this. Absolutely not people you want to work for or be managed by.

Arriving early + being honest about your experience sounds like you put your best foot forward and they treated you appallingly. hope you find a role working with and for good people soon.

Irridescantshimmmer · 29/07/2024 20:24

They should be ashamed of themselves, not you. How were you to know the specifics on how they make beds without a Chrystal ball?

Just be glad you do not have to work with nasty people like them.

Waterboatlass · 29/07/2024 20:26

Timewasting arseholes. I'd actually complain to regional HR/ recruitment for having my time and travel expenses wasted here.

With respect, anyone able bodied and minded can be trained to make a bed. That's not what you were there to demonstrate unless the JD stipulated 'experience essential ' which it didn't.

They conducted a disgraceful interview, belittled you and it could have even been a health and safety risk getting a candidate to do any physical task by themselves without training or guidance (not saying you're likely to do yourself a terrible injury plumping pillows but that's not the point).

You did nothing wrong. They did.

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 29/07/2024 20:27

Wow doged a bullet there. Hope you're ok. Better job waits for you.

alrightluv · 29/07/2024 20:29

They sound awful! Good luck for your next interview 👍

earlymorningcurlewcall · 29/07/2024 20:31

Don't forget that an interview is as much for you as it is for them. They treated you badly, and I'd be writing to their HQ and cc'ing in the manager of the hotel you went to.

What an utterly shit "process" though.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 29/07/2024 18:04

Giving you 'daggers' and 'rolling their eyes'?

I mean, really?

This doesn't make sense if they've never met you before?

It does if they don't want you. I had it in an interview once. I quickly realised they already knew they were going to employ the other candidate whom they'd already worked with, while I was a stranger. The whispered remarks, the obvious favouritism, the downright cattiness towards me was something to behold - it was pathetic. I turned them down before they got the chance to turn me down. That pissed them off even more: I quote, "You can't do that..." from HR.

I'm not sure if this is just how housekeeping interviews work
Maybe as I'm not used to them
Always used to customer service

I feel your pain.

I once had an INTERVIEW for a Communications role for an academy trust. I get there and the whole floor is working in absolute silence. I'm asked no questions, just ushered into a room with a camera and spotlight pointed at me. I'm given a fucking role play about there being a stabbing involving a pupil and the press asking questions. That was the supposed interview. I got home and withdrew my application.

I would be sending a Tweet to the Hilton calling this out ! Appalling treatment

This. It doesn't make them look good at all.

diddl · 29/07/2024 20:35

Many years ago I was taught how to make a bed-with hospital corners!

Always with someone else though-not just one person lifting a mattress.

I'd probably have stood there like a fanny waiting for one of them to come & do it with me!

MotherJessAndKittens · 29/07/2024 20:37

Don't beat yourself up. They were totally out of order. Best not working in a place like that anyway but you could complain to the hotel manager or owner. Just thank your lucky stars that you found out what they would be like!

BippityBopper · 29/07/2024 20:37

Just to add, arriving 15minutes early is perfectly acceptable. Especially as they'd surely have suitable space for you to sit while you wait. They are absolutely dicks.

I agree with others that you should complain. They need to be held accountable.

Lazydomestic · 29/07/2024 20:39

Chalk it up to useful experience ! Wasn’t your dream role with an amazing company.
Contact the recruiter for Friday and ask what the interview format will be and anything you could prepare for in advance.
Do some background research on their culture, values & policies and don’t let todays experience knock your confidence:)

I recently withdrew a job application....it was for the position of school cook in a village primary school....for my interview they wanted me to plan a 3 week menu including dietary needs and it had to be less than £2.53 per child per day....a ridiculous amount of work just to get an interview...oh and the job paid £12 an hour.

How is that ridiculous. The right person would be able to have a good go at that quite easily.

It's a disproportionate amount of work to plan 15 meals plus alternatives for dietary requirements (so potentially 45 meals) and cost them all out, just to then get an interview.

opalescented · 29/07/2024 18:26

What's with the sexist insults?

What’s with the finding an issue when there isn’t one?
They were women and they were bitchy. If they had been men I would have said the same, but they weren’t. If they had been nice, I would have said ‘what lovely welcoming ladies’. Same for men. But their behavior was unpleasant and not what I would allow my managerial employees to do when interviewing for new staff.

Paperweight7 · 29/07/2024 20:51

Its really not you, its them.

How on earth are you supposed to know how they do the beds there? I wouldn't have a clue!

Hope you are OK.

harmfulsweeties · 29/07/2024 20:53

If they're like this at interview-imagine how much worse they would be to work with and for.

You don't need to feel low because they were hugely unprofessional. It's nothing that you did-it sounds like they went into the interview-if you can even call it that-with their minds already made up and whatever you did-would never have been good enough to convince them otherwise.

Just think how lucky you are that you don't get to work around them every day, because I can 100% guarantee that if they treat people like this at interview-they are so much worse when you actually work for and with them.
