Had a interview today
Well if you can call it that
It was at Hilton hotel
For a room attendant /housekeeper

I got there and the receptionist told me I was too early (15 mins early ) so I just sat in reception whilst they gave me daggers
Then one came over and said "housekeeping interview isn't it ? " I said yes and she rolled her eyes (no idea why )

Then head of housekeeping comes over
She was nice enough but asked me nothing
I mean nothing
No previous job history
She said okay go to a room and make a bed.

Bare in mind I have no experience (ad said training will be given )
Got to the room
It was red hot
Head of housekeeping
Supervisor and 2 room attendants all there.

I had to try and guess how they like the bed being made
I had no experience of making a hotel bed

Whilst I was was busy making it they were whispering "she hasn't folded that properly "
At this point I was panicking and sweating
Shaking the works
Anyway I made the bed (in a fashion )
The head of housekeeping just said
"Sorry we won't be offering you this role "
Then I left
I'm so embarrassed

How is that ridiculous. The right person would be able to have a good go at that quite easily.

It is absolutely ridiculous and there's always one who will pretend that it would be a piece of cake for them to do it.

The hoops that some employers expect prospective employees to jump through to get what is, essentially, a minimum wage job (and there's nothing wrong with that) is absolutely ludicrous.

They expect to pay pittance, and expect people to break their backs to get it.

Higglepigglewiggle · 29/07/2024 21:08

That sounds very odd. I have had a job housekeeping in a hotel before and it was a normal sit down interview with standard questions. I had training on the job. Your expectations are normal, their ‘interview’ style was not!

Op you've dodged a bullet. They're workplace bullies.

I'd argue that 15 minutes is too long. 5 minutes - perfect. 10 mins OK. Any longer than that and you're best off going to the loo or having a wander outside before letting them know you're available.

Of course you would 🙄
Sounds like you'd argue with your own shadow on this thread.

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 21:11

@Higglepigglewiggle I had turned up knowing how many hotels they had
All their policy's
Had all my answers why I wanted to work there
All my scenarios
It seems they don't care about any of it -just someone to get through the rooms quick

Hilton HR Department would very likely be all over this if you contacted them

Well yes. That's what they need.

Andthereitis · 29/07/2024 21:13

How awful of them.

I think I would have made a fuss of the no experience necessary in the advert and ask them to either provide the training or to demonstrate the process and then I'd have a go. And say I didn't quite get it until they'd done it three times.
Witches of Bedwick.

No I've just run a lot of job interviews.

Don’t worry once I ‘rode’ out of an interview setting on a massive umbrella whilst pretending it was a broom when they told me there was no on site parking. I have no idea why. Nerves I think! I didn’t get the job! It
sounds like you were more composed and it was them with the problem!

This is the first time I've laughed all day (bad day). thanking you

I don't understand what ethnicity has to do with bed making ?

It's not an easy job and let's face it in hospitality and food, Eastern Europeans are favourable because they have a better work ethic, work through breaks, fitter etc.

I've known lots of British people not to stay at these kind of jobs because it's hard (Not saying all British) . Another example is food factories, managers have openly admitted they don't hire British people.

CameoRodeo · 29/07/2024 21:18

As other pps have said - I would report them to hr. Completely unprofessional of them, including the receptionist who rolled her eyes.
You had a lucky escape op, you sound far too good for the likes of those idiots.

Greytulips · 29/07/2024 21:21

A travel company sounds much more interesting.

changedusernameforthis1 · 29/07/2024 21:24

Are you sure it was for a hotel and not a high school?
I hope you feel better soon OP - but I agree with PP's, you dodged a huge bullet and are much better off not working for them.

TattiePants · 29/07/2024 21:30

You've definitely dodged a bullet. Good luck for Friday, Hays are a huge local employer in my city and they have an excellent reputation.

Gremlins101 · 29/07/2024 21:34

They treated you very rudely and it shouldn't be you that is embarrassed, but them. Better not working for a company like this. Another interview will go better :)

What's for you won't pass you!!

Cherryflavouranything · 29/07/2024 21:35

Having done this job: you are so SO lucky you didn’t get it. It’s honestly the hardest job I’ve ever done (& I’m one of those people who has worked basically everywhere). Physically so demanding and you’re timed per room. Depends on the hotel, but you usually only get 14 minutes per room (including bathroom). Then the head of housekeeping goes round checking and writes you a list of everything you did wrong and you have to go correct it. It’s awful 😂 congratulations on not getting it. And good luck with your upcoming interview! I’ve done the travel industry too. They like people who are presentable and good at small talk.

philosoppee · 29/07/2024 21:35

I really hope you're not so upset after reading all these supportive comments. You were treated really badly at an interview you'd taken time to be well-prepared for. I really do think you should contact head office. You were made unwelcome from the very start. You sound like a hard worker who would commit themselves to doing a job well. Please forget these awful people and focus on your next interview. The very best of luck.

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 29/07/2024 21:36

Haven’t read the whole thread of replies but looks like you dodged a dodgy job there!
I used to work for a travel agency and generally, they are looking for people with good communication skills - if you’re chatty and can build a rapport with people - you’ll be fine.
if you’ve been on holiday you’ll have an idea of what people are looking for… but they’ll teach you all the questions to ask, etc.
good luck on Friday!

Yalta · 29/07/2024 21:37

I think that they probably had a friend or relative they wanted to give the job to and they didn’t want you to come across as capable

I think I would email HR in their Head office saying when and where you had your interview and saying that although the job advert says training would be given that maybe they should say that they needed someone already familiar with how Hilton Hotels housekeeping staff make their beds etc as the interview was a test in making a bed to Hilton’s standard and not knowing was the reason you were told you weren’t going to be hired.
I would also describe the interview and the comments you heard and say it was completely unprofessional and would hope they never put another person through this sort of test again by not misrepresenting the job on offer.
Not only did you waste their time but you wasted your time as well.

I would do it just to get my own back on these people and hope they get a bollocking

you should be so happy you didn't get the job! It would have been hell pure HELL.

Sorry you're feeling bad, I know it must have been awful but I am so glad you won't be working with these people.

TowerStork · 29/07/2024 22:02

Don't be embarrassed. They should be embarrassed for treating a person like that

XenoBitch · 29/07/2024 22:04

Crikey, that wasn't an interview... it was a huge waste of your time and effort, an embarrassment. It sounds like no one there knows what an interview is meant to be. More fool them.

Mamabear999 · 29/07/2024 22:19

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 18:02

I honestly came home feeling so low.
I had been revising questions all week with my STAR responses.
I am kicking myself for even applying
After years of administrative roles I thought I would try something new.
I took all my gcse/a level info with me and they didn't even ask.

It was just so intimidating

I honestly thought it would be a interview with questions
Then you would start and shadow a attendant whilst you found your feet

That is so awful OP, I am so sorry that happened. I would not let that drop. I would def flag this to Hilton HR. (However not all Hilton hotels are actually owned and operated by Hilton. Some hotel management companies pay to use the Hilton Brand name and operate to their standards but the employees are not employed by Hilton but by the hotel management company.

doodlisaxx · 29/07/2024 18:15

I'm not sure if this is just how housekeeping interviews work
Maybe as I'm not used to them
Always used to customer service

It's absolutely not.
You get a skills based assessment which making a bed etc but if you told you have no experience at all, then you should have been asked to come in for a trial shift.

Email the GM of the hotel and tell them of your experience. I would be mortified if I found out someone had interviewed a candidate like this and left them feeling this way.
