Do you judge/ pity converts to Islam?

Firstly I’m a convert to Islam. White European, so more than likely if you saw me you’d assume I was a convert, plus my name would definitely give the game away.

i live in a metropolitan area where converts are yes rare but not too too share whereby it’s shocking.

well keeping this in mind, I bought a block of sessions for a beauty treatment, and the aesthetician was visibly taken back by me firstly, fine it happens because I wasn’t what she was expecting, with my name and I show up in a headscarf.

but the questions, not only were they pretty inappropriate but also steeped in judgment. I was shocked. I could tell that she wasn’t necessarily being malicious or even hateful, but she clearly had a very pre conceived notion about my motivations and my choices. Ie several questions about my husband and how he made me convert, or as she said ‘become Islamic’, lots on clothing and how she often feels sorry for a lot of Muslim women.

truthfully MN, is this a thing? Deep down are these thoughts people have but maybe don’t voice.

in general even at work I do have questions asked but they are more diplomatically phrased- so now I’m wondering am I actually being judged/ pitied?

I'm sorry if you feel that people have ridiculed you in the past, or been intolerant of your views.
That said, as much as you are free and allowed to follow a faith/religion, other people are also allowed to question and criticise faith/religion.
Some christians aren't exactly tolerant of atheists either, in my experience anyway, and tolerance works both ways.

No-one has ridiculed me as I haven't personally got that involved. It was more an observation of a general antipathy to religion on mumsnet.

As you say, everyone is free to express their views / practise their beliefs as they wish and I haven't actually declared mine. Just an interested observer.

Questioning religion is actually healthy, as long as it's done respectfully.

Undoubtedly there have been a few phobic posts but overall this thread really isn't phobic. Thinking a religion is ridiculous and stating that when asked does not make one phobic. While it might feel unpleasant when someone criticises your religion, unless there are attempts to stop you practising your religion or judgement/abuse directed towards you specifically because of your religion then it's not phobic. People are allowed to think religion is ridiculous.

That is mighty rich. You have been deliberately goady and obtuse and as another poster pointed out, you objected to my fairly bland comments (that are a common part of feminist parlance) just because I’m Muslim.

youre alllowed to think what you want including religion is stupid. But when you subject a specific group to a greater scrutiny than others that’s prejudice and that’s what you exhibited on this thread

I definitely haven't 'subjected a specific group to greater scrutiny' - I question and scrutinise all religions, however we focused more on islam on this particular thread because you made the thread about islam.
You couldn't justify your motivation for the 'fairly bland comments' - suggesting others also use those terms doesn't explain why you chose them at that particular time.
As for goady, may I refer you to the theme of your thread and attempts to shut down any criticisim as 'phobia'.
What are you ttrying to achieve?

Attention. Quite clearly a strong need for it.

Christianity. And quote the crusades at me. It was 1000 years ago.

Either you are blind or ignorant, have you ever even read the bible? It's nothing but hate fueled, misogynistic garbage. I love how Christians and Catholics constantly claim the higher ground despite the fact that you don't have a leg to stand on. Yes, Islam is a horrible, misogynistic religion, but please don't pretend like every single religion isn't the exact same.

Dkdjdjsns · 12/08/2024 11:30

I genuinely like the teachings of Jesus Christ

I agree. Nearly all religions are misogynistic because they were written by men thousands of years ago. Of course, there are reformist and updated branches of religions.

The teachings of Jesus Christ are not special. Literally every religion emphasises kindness and charity. No one actually follows those precepts though.

I judge, but it's not limited to Muslims. I think anyone who believes in some form of God is a bit daft in the head, and I'll likely think less of your opinion on any other subject as a result.

Pick a conspiracy that you find utterly ludicrous. Flat Earth, faked moon landings, the Kardashians NOT being lizard people etc.

Think about how you feel about people who believe that stuff. Slightly concerned for their wellbeing, wondering if they have mental health issues, unlikely to take anything else they say at face value.

Thats how I feel about people who believe in gods. The same way I would if someone told me Unicorns were real. (Not Yetis though, the Yeti definitely exists.😂 )

My DC is pretty insistent that unicorns are real. Possibly a subtype of dinosaur.

Does she follow a faith based on the existence of unicorns though?

I think currently unicorns, dinosaurs and animals dressed as power rangers. (DC's 2).

Definitely not mermaids though. Mermaids are apparently terrible.

Dkdjdjsns · 13/08/2024 18:35

Do you think all the theological arguments for the existence of a creator are BS? That something just came from nothing?
