Today I was told I have cancer. I'm sat alone at home to digest the news

DH has gone out, it was planned. He asked if I minded him going. DC don't knowl and are doing own things. I messaged a friend to suggest a chat but she isn't picking up. I had told her today was diagnoses day but she's forgotten. We all have busy lives. I'm not going to tell friends over a message. Im purposely not googling it. I feel helpless waiting for the next hospital appt. Waiting to find out more.

Just wanted a hand hold

I won't sleep tonight. Any recommendations for Netflix/prime binge sets ?

Thanks all.

I like most genres for box sets. Is High Country on itv any good ? Aussie detective series I think

Looks interesting.

We're watching series 5 of Fargo. Dark and funny. June Temple has a wicked minesotan accent in it - which is quite impressive.

GoldFrame · 25/07/2024 20:53

If you haven’t seen Schitt’s creek or Grace and Frankie, go for one of those.

If you go to bed, I like some things on the free insight timer app for distraction. Or an audiobook or kindle book of something I loved as a child. I recently re read all the Mary Poppins books

High Country is good but on the BBC, I have recovered from cancer twice it can be done wishing you all the best

Noname99 · 25/07/2024 20:55

I like the Turkish detective on bbc player. So far, it’s got enough to keep interesting but isn’t really taxing! I’m quite chuffed I spotted the twist in the first bit about who killed the girl and fiancée

Happy to just sit here for a bit with you

UpThereForThinkingDownThereForDancing · 25/07/2024 20:57

Brilliant new series on BBC called Spent!!! Ace characters, funny, sharp and good escapism!

Buildingthefuture · 25/07/2024 20:57

Have you watched Happy Valley? That’s good. Or, slightly different (and old!) the Sopranos is good for a distraction. I also like Downton as a fluffy series to hold my attention……
You are probably not going to sleep so can I also suggest you look up some free meditation/relaxation apps? I have one called “sleep easily” by a woman called “Shazi”….works every time…..

Compash · 25/07/2024 20:58

Poor you, it's rotten news to get, your head must be spinning... I agree with the other posts - get something light and distracting on. Can you put yourself together a little tray of nibbles and a nice drink? Have a shower or bath and get into clean pyjamas? If you have to google, try to look for a support forum for your condition and explain that you're just diagnosed - people will have been there and will know how you feel and what you need.

Your husband might be in a bit of denial or in shock - I know, not very helpful for you - but I hope he can have processed it a bit and be ready to talk tomorrow. Don't try to go there if he comes home sloshed, wait until you've both slept on it.

This will become easier to handle once you've absorbed it and have a treatment plan going forward - the hospital will guide you there. This is doable, but I know how stunned you must feel now, sending best wishes. 🤗

Second Grace and Frankie; excellent show that is sure to get you laughing.

I’m on the 2 week pathway at the moment for possible bowel cancer, and struggling with the ‘what if’s’.

I’m so sorry for your news, and wish you a speedy recovery. Where’s your husband off to? Does he not realise the emotional impact of the news today?

RichPetunia · 25/07/2024 21:01

I watched Yesterday on BBC iPlayer earlier today. It's a nice little film about a musician who has an accident, then wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed. He then sets about trying to get a music career using all their songs.
It's a nice little film.
Sorry to hear about your news 💐.

I am sure you must be reeling. I supported my sister in similar so have an inkling of what you might be going through.

Box sets - I second Ted Lasso, Grace & Frankie, Schitts Creek and surprisingly, I have recently really enjoyed Clarkson’s Farm.

I agree - don’t google.

I am also behind clean PJ’s, lovely new sheets, a bath if you feel like it and a glass of wine.

There is going to be a lot to process and decisions to make - what I will say, is although the NHS is pretty much on its knees, ime cancer services in this country are outstanding and the staff are angels who walk amongst us. Please take heart that you will be supported throughout with the highest standard of care. MacMillan and Marie Curie are also amazing and have fabulous helplines.

Agree. The Gilded Age is the perfect escape for a situation like this.

I don't know if you can get it on Netflix, but Due South. A tv show from the 90s.

Paul Gross. Leslie Nielson (in a few episodes anyway).

Might be the greatest tv show I have ever seen.

Anon4once · 25/07/2024 21:12

Sorry to hear this, can you have treatment? Is it a good success rate ?
I'm sorry 😔

XChrome · 25/07/2024 21:14

OP, do you like rude comedy with a lot of swearing? Have you ever seen the Trailer Park Boys? The older sitcom, not the newer Swearnet talk show. Also, the special where they went to London sucked. It's the original show that's fall on your ass level funny.

Anon4once · 25/07/2024 21:14

Did you get your friend, did she get back to you?

Ineffable23 · 25/07/2024 21:15

If you do decide to try and sleep I have been known to use my smart speaker to play me a (deliberately selected moderately interesting non fiction audio book - no plot to keep me engaged, and non fiction generally means not too many voices or tonal changes to wake me up if I start drifting off) and then also use my phone to separately play forest/stream/river sounds to fully block out thoughts from my brain.

Otherwise I hope the box sets are suitably distracting.

Scaredandworried98 · 25/07/2024 21:16

Thanks for all the binge watch recommendations. I'll check these out.
Hugs to all those also going through their own cancer journeys.
I've cleaned the whole house. Had a long soak and in pj's on the sofa 😊

I hope it gave you a little respite from thinking about everything! Flowers

Feel free to message me if you want to talk

i was where you are 6 1/2 years ago. I’m single and was on my own at the hospital when i was told that the lump I had found was definitely cancer. I then had to come home at night to an empty house. I remember going to bed really early and then waking up and practically shaking as the news hit me all over again. I then had to phone my parents who were in America at the time and break the news over the phone

unfortunately mine turned out to be stage 4 so my treatment is ongoing, I’m currently going through weekly chemo and have now lost most of my hair.

WonderingWanda · 25/07/2024 21:18

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this.

When your dh decided to go out were you being brave and saying 'I'll be fine' in that way we do when we think we just need to carry on as normal. It's ok to text him and say "actually I'm not really alright, can you come home please?".
