Have you been to a place no one else has been to? AGAIN!

Hi

Someone mentioned enjoying this thread so I thought I'd do another one. IIRC you had to post three places and other MNers said if they'd been there. If they hadn't, you won my undying respect.

No impossible places like the inside of a nuclear reactor this time. As small as a pub, as big as a country.

I'll start:

Tikal, Guatemala
Alice Springs, Australia (easy one!)
Jinja, Uganda

GO!

Federal Reserve gold vaults and Bank of England gold vaults.

AnnaMagnani · 23/07/2024 19:03

The Council Chamber of the Knights of St John - bizarrely I was giving a lecture there to medical students, none of whom were remotely excited about the venue

Cambridge's cold war nuclear bunker

Various prisons, high security and otherwise

whatsappdoc · 23/07/2024 19:11

All in the Thames Estuary -
Boat trips to the wreck of the ticking timebomb the SS Richard Montgomery, keeping outside the danger zone obviously, and the derelict Red Sands Forts (creepy).
Foulness Island, only open once a month to visitors.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2024 19:14

Dollywood

We drove through there once.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 23/07/2024 19:18

10 Downing Street with David Cameron
Tea with Prince Philip
Leningrad
Pont du Gard
Uganda

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2024 19:18

I stayed in a tent half way down the Angel trail in the Grand Canyon. I had to shake a scorpion out of my boot in the morning

I've slept under the stars (no tent) on various beaches along the Grand Canyon.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/07/2024 19:23

Fiesole roman amphitheatre - near Florence

Been there (did you go to the nice restaurant up there too?)

Well that sent me down a Google hole.

Fascinating!!!

Also been to Fiesole Roman amphitheatre.

There's more than one lovely restaurant! Am guessing @ErrolTheDragon you mean the one up the steep slope.

Imicola · 23/07/2024 19:36

I've also been to postojna, Slovenia; Bran castle Romania; and tiree, as mentioned by PPs.

upinaballoon · 23/07/2024 19:37

Cana in Galilee

Claxby Pluckacre

The top of a British Sugar factory sugar silo

SweetChilliGirl · 23/07/2024 19:51

Have also been to:
Mai Chau, Vietnam
Khao Sok, Thailand
Montevideo, Uruguay
Meknes Morocco

Suhbataar · 23/07/2024 20:02

These are all so glamorous and far flung!

Mine are less so:

The human chess festival, Marostica, Italy
A toga party at the Pink Palace in Corfu
On the set of a movie as an extra (Human Traffic)

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/07/2024 20:03

Lots of people are posting experiences so I'm starting a thread for that. All you actors, backstage types and climbers, FIND ME!

Vedanthangal bird sanctuary, Tamil Nadu, India. Spent a day there on my own once. No other visitors.
I am going to make a plan to visit Fingal's cave now I've read this thread.

Cornishmumofone · 23/07/2024 20:07

@LaPalmaLlama My sister lived in Moranbah for at least 5 years, so I've been there.

Pebbles16 · 23/07/2024 20:10

Bishkek
Kaesong
Moshi

PoliteOtter · 23/07/2024 20:14

I've hardly been anywhere compared to people on this thread but I have been to the following:
East Germany (via East Berlin) in 1989
Through Checkpoint Charlie, also in 1989
WTC Observation Tower, 1999
In the cockpit of a plane for landing, pre-2001

slug · 23/07/2024 20:27

@MrsTerryPratchett Yes it is, we've been through Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in the last 2 weeks. They blend together after a bit. It's close to the Latvian border though

Is it worth the trip? I think it looks really interesting.

Fingal's Cave had been a wish for decades. Approaching it last year was like an out of body experience for me, couldn't actually believe I was there, getting closer and closer. Surreal.

Bouledeneige · 23/07/2024 20:42

I've been to Buckingham Palace and No 10 about 5 or 6 times each. I've also been to Stationers Hall, Calakamul (not stated the night there) and North Cape.

I've stayed in Windsor castle several times;
Visited The Kaymalki underground city in Capadoccia
Bruny Island in Tasmania with albino kangaroos

AuraBora · 23/07/2024 20:53

Kazan, Russia - East of Moscow (about 13 hours on the Transiberian). Probably the most decrepit place I've ever seen...almost every other building falling down and extreme poverty.
Swaziland and Botswana - may have been mentioned but I couldn't see them.

Someone mentioned Leningrad. I've been to St Petersburg.. would love to have seen how it was as Leningrad.. I was very much hoping to go back at some point but with how things are with Russia I wonder if I ever will...

rightoguvnor · 23/07/2024 21:00

Cabinet Room at No 10
Division Lobby at the Houses of Parliament
White Pass Alaska

@whatsappdoc - there's nothing like the feeling of approaching a place you've dreamed of for years - I cried when I stood at the Cape of Good Hope, I first read about it around 1973 and finally got there in 2019 (going back later this year).

Bouledeneige · 23/07/2024 21:01

I've been in the cabinet room at no 10
