Horror for 5yo. Recommendations?

By 'horror' I mean age appropriate spooky films. He loves anything and everything scary. Monster House is his favourite. He's desperate to watch Wednesday and Beetlejuice but they're not appropriate so I've said no. Can anyone suggest anything as a substitute?

At 5?! Scooby doo, hotel transylvania?

ManyATrueWord · 17/07/2024 22:04

Creeped out on BBC CBBC? Spooked me for sure. Nothing gory. The one about the boy in the circus was memorable

ETA probably a bit old for five.

Edited

I'll check them out. I always watch first (stick it on in the background when I'm working). Thanks!

Labyrinth might have some scary parts for a 5 yr old.
Coraline

Sorry I didn't have my glasses on! Nightmare before Christmas or Corpse Bride?

Not sure box trolls is really meant to be spooky, but my ds1 who is nearly 13 still talks about how much it 'freaked him out'. Its very Burtony

Paranorman - it's a great film. You might need to age check for a 5 year old

Coraline

We love Coraline. I adore labyrinth but he didn't like it (not my child!).

I'd be more concerned at a 5 year old wanting to watch Beetlejuice tbh.

K0OLA1D · 17/07/2024 22:09

Ooo The Pagemaster!

It was my fave film when I was little. There are certainly 'scary' bits in it.

Yes he loved this. I think we've just exhausted the scary films. We have a spooky film night ever Friday and we're running out!

Monsters Inc maybe? Though at 5 mine got scared by elsa's scary snowman in frozen!!
Maybe the cartoon series with skeletons in - think was called funny bones?
How about the addams family or the munsters if you can get the old tv series anywhere.
Depends - does he just want something with monsters in rather than be scared?

GalacticalFarce · 17/07/2024 22:12

The Witches? Pretty terrifying, I thought.

I'd be more concerned at a 5 year old wanting to watch Beetlejuice tbh.

Why? A friend dressed up as Beetlejuice at our Halloween party and explained to him that it was from a film, then put 'jump in the line' on. He doesn't really know what Beetlejuice is. He's just drawn to it because when he asked if he could watch it I said it was too scary!

I don’t think Monsters Inc sounds like it’s going to scare OP’s 5 year child…

I think it's kindof like a roller coaster. Scary but you want to do it again after. Monster House is the scariest thing he's seen. If I'd actually watched first I might have even said no bit assumed it couldn't be that creepy as a PG!

Concerned how? There's a remake due out so chances are it's been mentioned somewhere or someone has made a comment about it, there's going to be hype about it soon.
