Horror for 5yo. Recommendations?

YogaBro · 17/07/2024 22:02

By 'horror' I mean age appropriate spooky films. He loves anything and everything scary. Monster House is his favourite. He's desperate to watch Wednesday and Beetlejuice but they're not appropriate so I've said no. Can anyone suggest anything as a substitute?

Omg I second pagemaster, what an incredible film.

Also - Coraline, the little vampire, haunted mansion are great

MakeMeAirtight · 17/07/2024 22:40

PG's, no I agree with poster above that desensitizing children so young isnt a good idea.

Theres loads of good fantasy films that are a U as mentioned previously like The Neverending Story. Also Bedtime Stories, and look to the 1980's for weird stuff like Labrynth.

Anyone suggesting Gremlins for a 5 year old is takin the piss.

Old school goosebumps? Most are on YouTube, parenting win if he likes them as you can buy him the books too 🤣

Oops not Gremlins then. I haven't seen it myself, it was a recommendation from someone else with me!

If he likes Corpse Bride etc those are PG and it sounds like the OP is going to check them all out first.

The Wizard of Oz, Bed Knobs and Broom Sticks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
The child catcher is scary 😂😂😂

Georgethecat1 · 17/07/2024 22:46

Oh and a tale of dark and Grimm i think on Netflix….kids version of Grimm fairytale.

Talipesmum · 17/07/2024 22:47

1980’s The Worst Witch. Loved it as a child (and an adult). Very made for tv. Spookiest bit is a music video scene with Tim Curry and some shocking graphics. Diana Rigg scary miss hardbroom too. Love it.

I think I just found them on Netflix’s!

germainegrainne · 17/07/2024 22:48

Grisly tales for gruesome kids is fantastic

PrincessOfPreschool · 17/07/2024 22:51

My kids loved CBBC's Merlin at that age! It's fantasy but has scary moments. They claim it's now got a 15 cert but I don't see how anything on CBBC could be a 15! Anyway, they are way more hard core than me. I can't even watch Harry Potter past the third one.

feliciabirthgiver · 17/07/2024 22:52

No chicken run is not particularly scary (unless you are a chicken living on a chicken farm) but there is definitely peril in escaping being put in a pie.

There's a list here that might help.

editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/best-scary-movies-for-kids/

Two others that have sprung to mind which I personally think are a bit creepy (but not spooky) are Watership Down and The lion witch and the wardrobe.

TillyBilly29 · 17/07/2024 22:54

Not a film but on Iplayer they have Roald Dahl's revolting rhymes which is pretty good, my ds loves spooky stuff - trying to find age appropriate shows are tricky. A Tale Dark & Grimm series on Netflix is quite horror based. Oh my son also love Mickey mouse Halloween special too!

It really isnt suitable for 5 or else it would be U.

Yes, yes they are. I work in the Film Industry and it’s quite literally my job to have an understanding on BBFC ratings

No you’re not! No 5 year old should be looking at YouTube.

2 sugars please.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/07/2024 23:03

Disney’s Snow White , Bambi and Pinocchio are pretty scary. No idea what rating they are. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang still scares the crap out of me too, if you’re determined.

lcakethereforeIam · 17/07/2024 23:09

There was a series of fairytales on years ago, I think it was called the Storyteller. It had John Hurt as the titular storyteller. A different story every week. If they fit the bill, they might keep you going for a few weeks.

Was going to suggest '9', but someone mentioned it upthread. I didn't realise it was 12a. Post apocalyptic rag dolls, terrified me.

sobeyondthehills · 17/07/2024 23:39

Oceangreyscale · 17/07/2024 22:37

Yep not criticising, I just found it quite scary myself!

Got some more input from someone else:

Zathura
Gremlins
ET!
The Black Cauldron
There's an old TV show called The Storyteller, might be available on Prime. Some more scary than others
The Adventures of Mark Twain is claymation with some quite scary bits.
Willow
Time Bandits

Nine (animated film from 2009) is a 12a rating so maybe when he's a bit older

Loving this challenge.

Not Gremilins, unless you want to explain to your child about Santa not being real. (Glad I watched it to remind me before showing DS)

spiderlight · 17/07/2024 23:49

Can you still get Rentaghost anywhere? I haven't seen it in decades but I loved it as a child.

sickofthisyear · 17/07/2024 23:54

Please don't let him watch Creeped Out without checking them first. My (admittedly sensitive) daughter watched them age 8 and some of them upset her for days. They're quite a dark kind of horror, not a 'boo- made you jump' kind.
