Horror for 5yo. Recommendations?

By 'horror' I mean age appropriate spooky films. He loves anything and everything scary. Monster House is his favourite. He's desperate to watch Wednesday and Beetlejuice but they're not appropriate so I've said no. Can anyone suggest anything as a substitute?

Spirited Away scared my 5 year old but at 6 she loves it. She already liked nightmare before Christmas etc.

Oceangreyscale · 17/07/2024 22:16

Oh there's a really beautiful animated film called the Song of the Sea. Has some scary bits and would be ok for that age I think. Honestly I think it's one of my favourite films too.

Lincoln24 · 17/07/2024 22:16

My 5 year old is like this and at the moment she loves the Doctor Who, the Christopher Eccleston episode with the mannequins that come to life is her favourite 😂 along with the rest of the earlier "new" ones.

Quite hardcore for 5!

You want nothing more than mild peril at 5. Anything over a "U" certificate isnt appropriate.

PG (parental guidance) is suitable for young children too

It's a PG on Disney to be fair

Maybe, so far she's been thrilled, certainly no nightmares, she's not a sensitive child to say the least!

Rockfordpeach · 17/07/2024 22:21

My 6 year old DS loves all things spooky. He's watched Addams Family, Coraline, Nightmare before Christmas, hocus pocus, hotel Transylvania... There are more but I'm struggling to remember them

Oceangreyscale · 17/07/2024 22:23

Ooh The Dark Crystal is quite creepy. At least I found it creepy as a kid!

The Princess Bride has peril but isn't horror. Again my 6yr old liked it.
The first Harry Potter? Maybe 5 is too young.
Jumanji?
The Neverending Story?

I should say my memory of some of these 80s/90s classics is pretty hazy but I remember them being scary in a fun way.

Hocus Pocus is the only film my son won't watch. We've never even tried. He heard the 'come little children' song and it terrified him. No visuals. Just the song. So that'll be one for when he's older.

Frankenweenie and Goosebumps

Rockfordpeach · 17/07/2024 22:25

Wendell and wild

feliciabirthgiver · 17/07/2024 22:26

Favourites in our house at that age used to include The Goonies, Curse of the Were Rabbit and Chicken Run (or anything Aardman)

Chicken run? Is this scary?

Decendants has evil and magic mentioned quite a bit. It's utterly horrific to me that supposedly 16 year olds are talking about getting married, but that doesn't seem to bother the kids!

Theremedy · 17/07/2024 22:30

Harry Potter? I’m sure my youngest watched it at around 5, or at least was aware when older siblings were watching it!

It really isnt suitable for 5 or else it would be U.

DoYouSmokePaul · 17/07/2024 22:33

I loved The Black Cauldron at that age. Disney animation but with some darker/scary themes and scenes.

Why do you actually want to scare your 5 year old?(if this is genuine).

Most are still watching Bluey and Charlie and Lola.

Desensitising young children really isn’t a good idea.

Loads of PGs are suitable for 5yos. Frozen, Encanto, Peter Rabbit, Moana, Tangled, Fantastic Mr Fox, Ratatouille. Would you really not let your 4yo watch these?

Hocus Pocus
Caroline
Never Ending Story

Yep not criticising, I just found it quite scary myself!

Got some more input from someone else:

Zathura
Gremlins
ET!
The Black Cauldron
There's an old TV show called The Storyteller, might be available on Prime. Some more scary than others
The Adventures of Mark Twain is claymation with some quite scary bits.
Willow
Time Bandits

Nine (animated film from 2009) is a 12a rating so maybe when he's a bit older

Loving this challenge.

He likes a spooky film, it's not that deep. They're all PG rated kids films.

Hocus pocus 1 and 2 are PG
