London Musicals - which one?

My (teenage) kids would really like to see a musical when we visit London next month. Any recommendations? Nothing Disney but it can be something that has been on for ages (and hopefully has cheap tickets!) as the only one we have seen is Grease! Thanks.

Loved Six and Kiss Me Kate recently. Mamma Mia was great (is it still on? This was a couple of years ago) and I long to see Cabaret but can't afford to yet. We saw Guys and Dolls at Christmas which was amazing, which was just as well because it was immersive and most of us stood for 3 hours!

I took DD13 to Hamilton a couple of weeks ago and we both LOVED it

Do you all like Stranger Things? If so The First Shadow is amazing.

Matilda is fantastic. Back to the Future if they like the films but it’s very cheesy.

Six is fine but not so spectacular, just six wives singing on stage, no scene changes and it’s short (no interval).

Although you said no Disney I would really recommend Frozen and it’s closing soon so last chance to see it.

I went to Next to Normal on Monday night and thought it was very good. Amazing cast. It might be a bit heavy for a 14 year old.
I love Cabaret but again maybe a bit much for a 14 year old.

MagentaRocks · 17/07/2024 21:42

We loved Lion King. Seen it a few times.

NightHouse · 17/07/2024 21:44

Another vote for Operation Mincemeat. It's amazing!

Standupcitizen · 17/07/2024 21:45

It's a shame you've specified no Disney because if you want a spectacle you can't beat the Lion King.

Jellytotsandwinegums · 17/07/2024 21:46

We loved Wicled - I think it's perfect for teens, and great staging.

buckleten · 17/07/2024 21:47

Hamilton, Heathers and Wicked are all excellent..

rainbowsparkle28 · 17/07/2024 21:48

Wicked, Matilda, Lion King or Hairspray.

My dd (now 18) has enjoyed Hamilton, Wicked, Book of Mormon (you may judge not age appropriate for your dcs), Six, Mamma Mia in the last few years. This year we are going to Hades Town. I also fancied Dear Evan Hansen.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 17/07/2024 22:06

Moulin rouge! It’s brilliant from start to finish and lots of modern songs that teenagers would enjoy.

Pinkandgreentrousers · 17/07/2024 22:08

Moulin Rouge, my 15 year old and I loved it and we have seen lots of London shows.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 17/07/2024 22:08

Download the Today Tix app for cheap tickets. I was in London 2 weeks ago and saw a few shows. Choir of Man was amazing and I highly recommend it.

AutumnLeaves1990 · 17/07/2024 22:11

Not a musical but couldn't rate "Stranger things, the first shadow" enough. The effects were mind-blowing. Seen it twice so far.

Snoopystick · 17/07/2024 22:12

Another vote for Moulin Rouge - DD aged 15 said it’s the best show she’s seen and we’ve been to quite a few

OneTaupeMentor · 17/07/2024 22:13

I don’t think you can beat Phantom or Les Mis.
Hamilton was amazing.
I didn’t like Six although it is my 14 year olds favourite.
I thought wicked was meh.
I absolutely loved Miss Saigon but I doubt that’s still on - I last saw it 20 years ago or more.

Mirandawrongs · 17/07/2024 22:14

Book of Mormon is the best, my kids love it! Bit naughty but not nasty.
operation mincemeat was good but not as goog
saw hades town in ny. It was ok

tigger1001 · 17/07/2024 22:15

My 14 year old absolutely loved Hamilton - as did I. Was fantastic!!

ParrotPirouette · 17/07/2024 22:18

I saw Your Lie in April’ last week, probably the cheapest tickets you’ll find and the show was fantastic, based on a Japanese manga series

Hamilton or Lion King 100%

Choir of Man is a good one, so so so fun but maybe not for if you’re only doing 1 show in a long time. Maybe if you’ve got a second night - it’s short, no interval.

Hadestown left me cold which is sad as I love Anaïs Mitchell and the album and was so excited!

Also tour of Theatre Royal Drury Labe highly recommended, and they do an afternoon tea too. And kids go free at ENO if that appeals??

ButtonMoonBlanketSky · 17/07/2024 22:20

Back to the Future was fantastic - pure joy 🎸

OneTaupeMentor · 17/07/2024 22:21

And to be honest, I was underwhelmed by the Lion King.
It felt all costume and staging and no heart. I know that is an unusual view though, my mum and daughter loved it.

sugarapplelane · 17/07/2024 22:21

Standing at the Skys Edge is the best musical I’ve seen in a long time. Absolutely phenomenal.

But it ends in a few weeks time 😢
