London Musicals - which one?

Buttalapasta · 17/07/2024 17:37

My (teenage) kids would really like to see a musical when we visit London next month. Any recommendations? Nothing Disney but it can be something that has been on for ages (and hopefully has cheap tickets!) as the only one we have seen is Grease! Thanks.

Guys and Dolls or Hamilton - obviously.

I saw Hadestown recently and it was pretty good - certainly seemed to appeal to the teen demographic.

I hated both Six and Wicked, but again they do appear to have many teenage fans (but any sensible parent accompanying them will have a grim night!).

I loved Six and Wicked!

Back to the Future would be a good choice (and watch the film first)

Two Strangers carry a cake across New York - superb, comical, uplifting, poignant

No love yet for come from away so I'm adding it to the mix. Just went to see it in Belfast a few weeks ago & it was so good-full of heart. And you could watch the documentary it's based on before or after.

Love les mis, wicked, six & Book of Mormon. Booked for dear Evan hansen when it comes to the local.

For pizazz if 42nd street is on you get your moneys worth of talent & people. Six is great but short & just 6 folk on stage

Aw love Come From Away! Didn’t realise it was on west end, will have to go. Saw it on Disney+

If the current production of Guys and Dolls is getting good reviews then that is always worth seeing the, an absolute classic.
But, even though it may be a great show overall, so t bother wasting your money on the current production of Wicked. I can’t even begin to describe how bad it is: costumes, cast, set all great. Sound design is so abysmally appalling it ruins the whole show. It’s not like the reviews haven’t told them so for at least the last year, but they’re not listening.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/07/2024 23:25

Les Miserables without a shadow of a doubt. Not cheap, though.

VivienneDelacroix · 17/07/2024 23:30

Hamilton, no question.

friendlikeme · 17/07/2024 23:39

I saw Two Strangers Carry a Cake at the weekend and loved it! Got v cheap tickets via TodayTix. Theatre roulette as someone mentioned above is also very good for cheaper tickets.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 17/07/2024 23:41

Moulin rouge is the best I’ve ever seen

mamma Mia is also fab, or phantom or hamilton

ChangeyTime · 17/07/2024 23:46

Hamilton 100%

Best show on the west end.

Plus the theatre is gorgeous.

Spin4Gin · 18/07/2024 01:05

Hamilton, Les Miserables, Moulin Rouge and Harry Potter are the best things on in the west end that I have seen!!

Buttalapasta · 18/07/2024 06:34

Thanks everyone. We saw Hamilton on tv - not the same I know but I'd rather see something else. I'd like to see Les Mis but the tickets are really expensive! How?? It's been on for decades! Guys and dolls look fab but there is no way I could stand.

A question re: tickets. For those who have used ticket roulette were you happy with the tickets you got?

My DD has used it a few times and been very happy with what she has seen.
When we went together we got Mousetrap,
If you go more than once they do not give you the same tickets again and you can cross off one show you dont want.

OneTaupeMentor · 18/07/2024 07:10

Even if you have seen the recording of Hamilton you should see it live.
My mum wasn’t impressed with it on TV but the London production completely changed her opinion.
I’ve seen many many shows and it was definitely up there in my top three - and if I’m honest it was probably the best it’s just jostling with nostalgia for position in my list.

westcountrywoman · 18/07/2024 07:18

My DC (11& 13) loved Back to the Future. They hadn't seen the film beforehand.

lostoldname · 18/07/2024 07:22

Operation Mincemeat is amazing, Six and for a fun, feel good factor - Suster Act.

Anyone seen Standing at the Sky's Edge?

PuppyMonkey · 18/07/2024 07:25

You can opt to go in the seated bit at Guys n Dolls, you don’t need to stand and do the immersive bit. It’s a great show either way.

applecatchers36 · 18/07/2024 07:29

Mine love Matilda, Six, and Book of Mormon found it funny with brash humour but could be too adult depending on teens

Seeing Standing at the Skys Edge for the second time this week. It's a great show & The Gillian Lynne theatre has some cracking deals on "restricted view" seats that really aren't that restricted. Can highly recommend.

We got Les Mis in Kids Week, 2 adult tickets and DD got a free, I think I paid £120 in total.

I look at these seat review pages and knew what seats would work. Yes, the most expensives ones are great but I found that it's not always necessary.

faffadoodledo · 18/07/2024 07:39

Thanks @SomethingWitty44

Will book for my next trip!

TheQueenWhoNeverWas · 18/07/2024 07:41

It's a shame you couldn't stand for Guys and Dolls because although it's a great show the immersive element is what makes it amazing. How old are your DC? Could they stand while you sit?
