Is there anything more boring than....

Someone who keeps quoting supposedly hilarious lines from films they've seen at you? Aaargh I can't stand it much longer!

Vegans who tell you that they're vegan when you haven't asked.
Honestly, no-one except you has any interest in what you do or don't eat/use/wear.
It's very dull.

Reminds me of when someone said to me 'How do you know if someone is a vegan? They'll soon tell you!'.

Yes!

It's worse when they then say it again. Usually louder.

Please give us more context on this, I'm intrigued as to how this works. Is it within a discussion of film, or are they just following you around saying things like, 'I have crossed oceans of time to find you', and 'that is the ugliest effing skirt I've ever seen'?

Are they quoting a line and then saying after that it's a quote from X film, or do you know a lot of film quotes and can recognsie them?

Soooo many questions!

He's a good friend of mine, and most of the time we have interesting conversations. But just lately he is prone to saying things like 'I watched Anchor Man/some other film again last night. Omg that film is SO funny' then proceeds to bore me with endless quotes from it. I wouldn't mind so much if a) the quotes were actually funny and b) I'd seen the film.

Sorry op, I used to be that person!! Baby brain and now possible menopause brain has robbed me of this useful life skill!!

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/07/2024 17:18

Yes, listening to an in depth rundown of the plot of those films.

Great thread. I second the ‘unnecessary detail’ brigade. My best friend is guilty of this to the extent I hear about her treacherous parking mission before I hear the story - which is normally really juicy!

Adding another one into the mix… I can’t STAND the boredom that comes with people - usually people you don’t know very well- wanting to show you a video of something on their phone. It tends to go as follows:

  1. frantic scrolling for said video on their camera roll. This always takes longer than they intend it to
  2. a video of something utterly mundane: their kid/grandkid doing something normal and kid-like. The video normally lasts 2 minutes +. During which time I’m mentally calculating how I can exit gracefully and not look bored

i have zero interest because I don’t know this child/person so my interest levels are in the minuses.

I can relate to this! I have another friend who is prone to this (thankfully not too often!). It usually involves a video of a 'fantastic band' that I have zero interest in and normally goes on for about 4 minutes. I'm sitting there pretending to look interested while thinking how much longer is this shit going to go on for?

I think just about any detail of peoples lives they share with you.
They never seem to comprehend that nobody really cares expect them.
Everyone else is just nodding politely whilst not giving a shit.

Have to disagree with you there.
It's called conversation.
Most people are interested in what is going on in their friends' lives.
I suspect you are in a small minority to not care about what is happening in the lives of your family and friends.

abracadabra1980 · 16/07/2024 18:50

Someone over the age of 12 who insists on sticking their phone in front of you to watch ANYTHING. Just fuck off. And fuck off again.

Titsywoo · 16/07/2024 18:51

When people start talking about their diet (weight loss/vegan/high protein - whatever). I don't give a fuck so shut up!

Someone asking you the driving route you took to visit them, then taking you every permutation of route you could have taken.

I love hearing this and always ask 😂. On the other hand boring is; pets, dreams, vegans, tv shows, house renovations

No I do care, I want the headlines within the conversation. Just not all the details. Let’s keep the conversation interesting.

You’re on a new diet? Great! (don’t for the next 15mins give me all the specific details).

You had a long journey? Oh dear (don’t give me a comprehensive run down of the route, what the hold up was, where it happened, what alternative route you considered, what actual alternative route you took).

You saw your nephew this weekend? Ah that’s lovely (don’t for a second think I want to look at the 65 photos you took or the insanely boring 3 minute video of said child doing nothing of any particular interest).

ruethewhirl · 16/07/2024 19:07

Hearing what meals people have made recently. Yawnsville.

OMG yes, this drives me bonkers. It doesn't matter so long as you get there!

Enjoying the Victoria Wood quotes though 😄

Oh God yes, and then they get out the road atlas just as you are leaving so they can point out which way you need to go home.

@DickEmery I saw a sign in a restaurant recently advertising 'gluten friendly' cake. What would you make of that?! Gluten free, or full of gluten?

Friendly towards Glutens I think. Maybe they are related to Ewoks, I'm not sure.

Some house renovation tales are okay, but not the interminable choosing of the paint colours, and the inevitable photos on their phone they have to endlessly scroll through in order to show you a wall with test patches of two almost identical shades of beige.

I'll kick off with re-doing GDPR training

Actually did this today... again!

My old boss was obsessed with Friends (the tv show) and would bang on about it endlessly. She would show me clips on her phone while mouthing or muttering along with dialogue to show how well she knew it. I don't mind Friends but it used to drive me potty. I tried to say I'd seen the clips she was on about but she'd still insist on showing me. I used to tune out and nod occasionally.

HRTQueen · 16/07/2024 20:14

Quoting Friends. I didnt find it funny then and I don’t from you. Or saying oh having a Monica etc moment

just as bad quoting Month Python

absolutely fine and often very funny to quote from Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Where do you stand on the occasional cry of "OOOOOOOH MATRON!"?

Because there are times where I just can't help myself.

Yes that’s funny Kenneth Williams was very funny

You say that it's funny, @HRTQueen , but no word of a lie, many years ago while looking after my MIL, the doorbell rang around the usual time, and it was her carer for the evening who'd come to get her ready for bed.

This particular day, it was a lady I'd never seen before. I invited her in, asked her name, and she said "Matron".

Well, have you ever seen that episode of "The Royale Family" where Nanna talks about her eye surgeon being called Michael Crawford, and then goes "You know, like OOOOH BETTY!" and then screams with laughter? Well, she was everything I had to try so hard not to be for the 27 & three quarter minutes that followed.

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/07/2024 20:42

Oh god, sooo many things. But my partner and I quote films we love back and forth to each other all the time, so I am probably biased, lol. We find it hilarious but I appreciate if we did it in front of people - we dont - others might not agree..

LondonLass61 · 16/07/2024 20:45

People who always make a conversation about them. E.g. they ask how you are and then barely listen to your reply before telling you all about themselves.
