Young and fit people don't fall?!?!?

I doubt very much he was in a fit state. But anyone could have fallen, at any age or in any state.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 15/07/2024 17:47

It seems his 'remains' (awful word 😖) were found not far from his last known whereabouts. Why did they take so long to find him I wonder? Confused

If it IS him, at least his family will have closure now. Not knowing what happened to someone, (and where the missing person is,) is worse than actually finding them deceased to be honest.

Yes. Absolutely useless!

The body has been found by the GREIM, the Guardia Civil mountain rescue team, which has been working tirelessly for weeks. It was reported here in the UK media that the Guardia Civil had stopped searching but this was not true. They had stopped the search by “normal” officers and had handed over to GREIM officers. Why the media was happy to report something that was untrue, no idea. Guess it fits the rethoric of “foreigners do not know how to do anything”

Thanks for explaining. I think it's terrible that the UK media repeatedly reported that the search had been called off whilst the Spanish mountain rescue team was continuing to search.

It's quite obvious why they didn't find him, they were not looking in the right place. Once they looked in the right place they found him.

The reason they didn't find him quicker is because this sort of terrain is extremely challenging to navigate through . Much of it is near vertical, covered with thick thorny bushes, and the rock can be loose, making it perilous to move up and down. I'm an experienced rock climber and mountain hiker, and I can see from the video released by the local searchers how difficult it would be. Sniffer dogs would be of little use in the area where JS's remains seem to have been found.

I have some personal experience of this sort of missing persons scenario, and it often takes weeks to locate a body. I was an acquaintance of Dr Natalie Christopher who went missing on a small Greek island a few years ago, and despite a more confined area and much easier landscape it still took many days to find her. In another case, a friend of my MIL in Cyprus who had early stage dementia left her home on the outskirts of a village, and despite in her 70s and only partially mobile she couldn't be found. Her remains turned up months later, only when the hunting season started. The various well publicized missing tourist cases in Greece this summer also show how surprisingly hard it can be to find people in these circumstances.

It was the Spanish police who announced the official search had ended. Turns out they continued to deploy searchers to quietly get on with finding Jay. Not the UK media’s fault on this occasion.

tsundoko · 15/07/2024 18:18

Well done to the Spanish Rescue Team who managed to find him, even though they are foreigners. Not giving up.

This shows the area where he was found. I can completely understand why it took so long to find him. Very inaccessible, sheer, vertical drops and dense overgrown plants.

People saying it doesn't make sense because they'd already searched the area, well it's easy to see how he could have been missed. I just hope it was quick, a bang on the head or something. Poor boy.

Like with Michael Mosely, I wonder what on earth possessed him to take that dangerous and isolated route through the rocky mountains when he could have taken the bus or at least walked along the proper road? We'll never know.

Likely he had been drinking or/and taking drugs, he had been to a festival and then went back to someone’s house. He probably wasn’t thinking straight when he decided to walk home…….he couldn’t have been because of the distance alone?

Certainly a very sad lesson in the risky behaviour of drug taking. Perhaps he would have taken more sensible decisions.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/07/2024 18:57

So glad the family can get closure and answers even if not the ones that would've wanted.

The conspiracy theories still going are bonkers. Guess for some easier to believe its something sinister rather then one mistake led to this..

Choochoo21 · 15/07/2024 19:28

It’s so sad but not unexpected.

I’m just glad that the family have closure and I hope he didn’t suffer.

It must be awful having a child die but it must be even worse not knowing what happened to them.

Well it's been reported that he was in fear for his safety at the b n b so that would explain why he didn't want to wait for the bus near the b n b and decided to start walking.
We'll never know for sure.

davegrohll · 15/07/2024 20:29

Just awful. First holiday abroad and he's coming home in a bodybag, I feel so much for his family and his friends especially Brad.

I do wonder though why he was apparently in fear for his safety at the rental ! A lot of unanswered questions. And I wonder who this mysterious other bloke was?!

There's the possibility of paranoid delusions if drugs was involved 😢

davegrohll · 15/07/2024 20:52

@BowlOfNoodles Yes very true. Now I wasn't innocent in my younger years, went to countless raves and sessions at peoples houses afterwards so that didn't seem unusual really especially if these guys had more drugs! But I do wonder wtf he had been taking to become so paranoid or if something was said to him that sent him on a bad one

@Taxingtaxhelp Also I'd say if he'd not eaten for a couple days, nor slept, and had no water he'd not be 'fit and healthy'. After a couple of hours walking uphill in that heat you'd be delirious and weak as a newborn?! He'd never been abroad before, even experienced hikers and stuff consider that area to be hardcore.

Tenerife badlands is definitely a place for very experienced hikers.
Just look at any hiking website to see.

A friend turned up where I was working to “ Say goodbye “
He was going to Findhorn, having jacked in his job with a well respected company.

It was clear he wasn’t “ Right”

He was tripping hard
Thankfully we were able to keep him calm and safe til he began to come down a little

He was in no fit state to drive-
Boss let us sit with him quietly til end of day.

He’d completely lost the plot tripping on his own.

Thankfully he was OK and kept his job!
