Looks like some sort of injury to Trump, likely superficial.

I've just been reading the headlines. The whole thing is horrifying.

People need to stop with the disgusting comments, someone has died for fucks sake.

Only waiting for someone to say the shooter had to die, to avoid someone getting the "it was set up" story out of them Hmm

A PP asked "This is the moral high ground is it?", and unfortunately with some on MN when it comes to Trump it is ... though at least it's better than a previous thread where folk were chortling over the possibility he might be assaassinated

And no I'm no fan either, but it's hardly Trump's fault if the Democrats have gifted him the election by insisting on hanging onto a hopeless case. An averagely intelligent amoeba could probably have beaten him, but no - they kept Biden and here we are

I think it is telling that when Jo Cox was murdered by a right wing extremist then this was rightly condemned across the political spectrum and by all civilised people.

However when a right wing politician such as Donald Trump is shot at then there have been several posters on this thread suggesting it was a set up and I suspect that there are many on the left who would be secretly relieved if he was assassinated.

It is becoming steadily evident that the left wing presents a greater danger to social order, democracy and personal liberty than the right wing ever will.

Anyone turning a political assassination attempt into a party political broadcast automatically exposes themselves someone not to be taken seriously.

Do you think Kennedy was assassinated because he was a democrat? Do you think Hinckley was making a political statement?

If anything it is an indictment of the crazy decision to give disaffected young people access to powerful guns. I don't care if you are from the right or the left in your political views, and I guess both sides have access to guns, but it's madness to give the right to own something that can kill people pretty easily from a distance randomly to huge swathes of the population.

I think the vast majority people in the UK don't want Trump dead, or Biden. They would just prefer one of the most powerful countries in the world to have both candidates for the most powerful position in that country to be at the peak of their physical and cognitive powers and not more ready for the care home. And that counts for everyone I have spoken to about this: those from the right and the left in their political views.

Also as a general point it's as illogical as hell to change your vote because of one crazy person with a rifle whose political views we aren't even aware of and who from past evidence of US political assassins doesn't have a coherent thought in their heads. When people shoot up infant schools no-one's views with a gun can be taken seriously in the US.

Very well said, @Pelham678, but plenty of nutjobs enjoy hanging out on social media and there's no reason to suppose MN would be exempt

Brilliant. My thoughts exactly

Nah, Trump is such a megalomaniac he'll remain convinced he's invincible.

Apparently psychopaths don’t feel fear. That might explain him asking to wait so that he could pump his fist and shout about fighting. He wasn’t scared and trying to get to safety in case he was still at risk, and once his immediate survival reflex - get down on the floor - had worn off, he was straight back up again.

justasking111 · 14/07/2024 08:16

An American friends daughter, passionate democrat as are her parents a year ago wrote a scathing post on Facebook about Biden saying that he shouldn't stand again, it would let the republicans win the next election.

She said she expected to be unfriended by many. She wasn't her friends reluctantly agreed.

Your ordinary democrat sounded dismayed, angry a year ago.

Well true. There are clearly a lot of trolls on here. And also political activists who like to stir people up.

I've realised how easy it is to whip up a fase argument because of the number of times I've seen people just repeat an opinion they've read in the newspaper or online as fact. For example that Emma Raducanu is too focused on her modelling career. It's preposterous, as no-one who is not completely dedicated to tennis is getting into the fourth round of any Grand Slam but people keep repeating it because they've read it on Twitter or in the Mirror.

notnowmarmaduke · 14/07/2024 05:55

a very normal reaction imo

@notnowmarmaduke What on earth is that opinion based on? 😂 Previous observations of people shot in the head who have been fist pumping afterwards?

20 year old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Pennsylvania apparently.

It’s been reported in the past hour he’s a registered republican

Basic school science.

Ignore the loud mouthed ignorants trying to act as if they are clever - look at the actual science.

Ain't that the truth, @Pelham678, and now we've got an armchair psychiatrist here to help us all out with a diagnosis of psychopathy ... what fun Hmm

Watched on TV, there was a woman facing the camera as Trump's car sped off with her arm in the air shouting, "USA, USA" I have no idea what that was about.

They believe they are the patriots and they are coming to a Revolution.

Wow what an intelligent comeback. Did you blow a raspberry too? And go and learn what a spoonerism is - it's not a stutter.

I know what a Spoonerism is - and I said it is common to mix up words when one has suffered in the past from stuttering. A lot of Biden's fluffs are Spoonerisms.

The poster I quoted is so ill-versed in recent history she had no idea what I meant by Trump inciting the January 6th insurrection, and thought I meant Trump made some slip of the tongue "in January".

Please.

Oh God. Are you going to tell me to “do your own research” now? 😂

I’m quite aware of fight or flight. You asserted that fist pumping the air, after being shot in the head is “normal”.

I have spoken to a relatively high number of people who have seen others shot in front of them (and I’ve been listening to their stories in a professional role where they have needed to explain the incidents in quite a bit of detail) and not one of them have ever said “and then he fist pumped the air”, or anything remotely along those lines. (Obviously they didn’t know about “basic school science” though.)

From a journalist and author. An analysis.

Also the gun used. How the heck did they get that into a rally?

I also stammer, and getting my mucking words fuddled is a common occurrence, as is talking too fast, in a bid to finish the sentence before effing up, and tripping over my words as a consequence. I do believe that Biden's recent issues are informed by a degree of cognitive decline but he has never been the most articulate speaker. The effect of speech impediments, particularly stammering, is frequently misunderstood by people seeking to compartmentalise effects (spoonerisms aren't a feature of stammering?? tell it to a stammerer) particularly by the Gareth Gates informed British public, who get it wrong every time.

100% this. Extremism is dangerous whether it sits on the left or the right.

I don’t like Trump at all myself, but I will not sit here wringing my hands in glee because he was nearly killed last night and during this, innocent bystanders have lost their lives.

We are supposed to live in a democracy, and disagreeing with someone’s views or stances or whatever does not give people free rein to try and kill them, with no regard for the lives of others.

It feels less and less like we live in democracy in the west everyday.

Willmafrockfit · 14/07/2024 09:13

i am more concerned for the body guards, 3 of them female and too short frankly to cover his face!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/07/2024 09:14

I’m no Trump fan, but these threads have been worrying.

What happened to When They Go Low We Go High?

Choochoo21 · 14/07/2024 09:17

I am not a trump fan at all but someone taking a shot at him is not ok.

I’m glad he wasn’t seriously injured.

I am hoping this may change his stance on gun laws but u doubt it will.

If the multiple schools getting shot up and kids getting killed doesn’t make you want tighter gun laws, then I can’t see this changing your mind.

Willmafrockfit · 14/07/2024 09:19

no, i think the gun laws wont be changed by this

Lentilweaver · 14/07/2024 09:20

Gun laws absolutely won't be changed. In fact, they will use this as an excuse to allow more guns.

A possible attempt on his life and PP's first thought is "this might make him more popular" and he "possibly set this up". This is what the moral high ground looks like, is it? 🙄
A shameful race to the bottom, in reality.

TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) in full effect.

The media campaign against him has been so successful people would prefer a senile puppet president over him.

Thanks for this. Another US President also was famous for his muddling of words and phrases. There is even a word for it: Bushisms.

As a linguist called Mark LIberman has said: "You can make any public figure sound like a boob, if you record everything he says and set hundreds of hostile observers to combing the transcripts for disfluencies, malapropisms, word formation errors and examples of non-standard pronunciation or usage... Which of us could stand up to a similar level of linguistic scrutiny?"
