New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

I'd wanted a vintage leather Chesterfield sofa for years - finally managed to get one in an absolutely gorgeous oxblood burgundy with metal studding down the back of the sofa as well as down the arms. It had been fully restored, polished etc before it was delivered and I'd had to wait a couple of months for it and then it had to be delivered 200 miles to get to me.

The delivery guys were really careful with it bringing it in (covered it with chamois sheets to protect it). I totally fell in love with it when I put it in place - then all of a sudden, my two very giddy Border Collies came bouncing into the room, up onto the sofa and left a huge deep scratch across one cushion, having somehow managed to move the soft throw that I'd placed there to stop the sofa from getting scratched.

I've given up being precious about my sofa now as one dog gets over-excited and literally uses the damn thing as a giant skateboard across the floor if he gets too excited.

When our ddog was alive she frequently scratched the leather sofa.
A really good leather spray took the worst of them marks off.

The night we had our very first, and quite expensive, sofa delivered I dropped a ketchup-laden hot dog on it.

DH bought me a new iPad for Christmas a few years ago and I immediately dropped it face down onto the wooden floor. Luckily, it didn't break but the whole picking it gingerly up off the floor to inspect potential damage happened in painful slow motion.

Got a lovely new settee ... I was just admiring it and thinking about placing some cushions.

DD (2 at the time) came in and threw up all over it.
Luckily the covers could be removed and washed - so no stains, but it had a cretin smell to it for a long time afterwards.

New sitting room carpet I could ill afford in my house which was party central when I was in my early 20s. Next morning came down to find a giant burn mark and an apologetic friend who'd kipped on the sofa and decided to light a fag by taking a lump of coal off the fire with the tongs and had dropped the coal! I was pretty philosophical as knew the carpet would get trashed with all the partying anyway so it got it over and done with right away.

When DD was a toddler I found some gorgeous old children's books in a charity shop. Got home and started to wonder if they might actually be worth a bit of money. Whilst I was distracted googling this DD scribbled on them! And yes they would've been worth £50-60!

Too many to count but these make me feel better. Trousers last weekend got splattered by antibacterial gel from a blocked up pump and it's bleached the fabric. First time of wearing them

Picked up new car from dealers and went from there to school, less than half a mile away, scraped and dented the passenger side turning into school gates!

autumn1610 · 13/07/2024 16:03

New carpet. Dropped something on it and then used carpet cleaner to get it up and I bleached it. Now I have a random rug on my landing

Still remember when the OH bought himself a new pair of very expensive suede shoes and wore them when we went out to a pub to meet some friends. All was well until we decided to get a pancake roll from the Chinese place on the way home and it dripped oil all over 1 shoe. Nothing he tried to make it look right so in the end he chucked them.

In the early 1980s, when Icelandic sweaters were in fashion, I spent some of my precious student grant on wool and circular needles and made one for myself. I didn't know that it shouldn't be washed at 60 degrees and I also didn't know that it shouldn't be tumble dried. Its first laundering left it toddler sized and with the texture of wood.

Over 30 years later, I designed and knitted a sweater in expensive merino wool. Superwash - I'd learned my lesson - but 4 ply and with colourwork so it took weeks. First time I wore it, I tripped, measured my length, and made a big hole in one sleeve. I was able to cut off the damaged part, pick up the stitches and knit a new sleeve-end, but it's never looked quite perfect.

£600 dishwasher, installed for a total of 2hrs, DP manages to run a massive scratch down the door.

Not ruined in the fact that it is still perfectly functionable but still pissed me off beyond belief!

AdaColeman · 13/07/2024 16:18

Moved into a brand new house, with a fitted kitchen including a gleaming polished steel sink.

An unknown workman had mixed up some cement with a stick, which he'd left firmly cemented onto my beautiful shiny new sink!

A really good leather spray took the worst of them marks off.

I use a leather polish called "Astonish" which seems to be quite good. To be honest, the sofa still looks good as the scratches have sort of blended in but I was so upset that day.
I didn't blame the dogs though. I took the risk and lost and my older dog seems to have perfected the art on jumping on the sofa at such an angle and speed that he can get it to move on its castors a good distance across the room haha.

Wore a brand new dress the other day. Lit a match to light a candle, head of lit match flew off and burnt a big hole in the dress. Dress now in the bin.

Same happened to me many years ago. I chanced my arm with the match manufacturers but they weren’t having it. 🤣

Husband woke up claiming he had the best night’s sleep on an expensive, new mattress he had just bought, feeling quite pleased with himself. Toddler daughter got in bed that first morning and peed on it. I’m sure there’s a proverb somewhere there.

PandaCory · 13/07/2024 16:23

Bought myself a new phone some years ago (admittedly not an expensive one, but my first smartphone so I was quite excited about it). Within half an hour of setting it up I dropped it while walking down the stairs, it hit the metal stair gate and the screen was cracked. If it had hit the stair carpet or the rug at the bottom, it would probably have been fine, but no... Screen protectors and phone cases all the way now!

New car, small delivery van (suzuki carry size), also used for travel to work and private travel alongside deliveries. 150 odd miles, 3 days in possession, and I got totalled by an impatient driver overtaking a row of five cars just as I was turning off. Fortunately fully insured so got a brand new one again a few weeks later.

I'm a single parent & money is often tight. One day last winter after finishing work I walked through town & decided to treat myself for once as I had just finished a huge project at work & just been paid.
I bought a gorgeous fuchsia pink quirky mohair cardigan with leopard print buttons I had been eyeing up in the shop window for weeks! It was an rare extravagant purchase for myself.
I loved it so much was trying it on with my Jean's when I got home so happy with it.
I wore it once , my ex boyfriend saw it on the bed, while I was in the showering and put it in the washing machine thinking it was for the dirty washing... it came out so small it didnt even fit my 8 year old daughter 😭😭😭😭 I was devastated..... I still think about it now

smooththecat · 13/07/2024 16:37

First time wearing new trousers that I was really pleased with. Walking to work, feeling great in my new trousers, the wind blew a giant bramble at me and tore them as well as scratching me in the face.

oohyoudevilyou · 13/07/2024 16:40

Spent nearly £150 on a lovely new wool duvet to help with my night sweats. Bloody cat jumped on the bed and pissed copiously on it on within hours.

Brand new carpet been down 5 days and I knocked the hot iron over and burnt a big iron shaped hole in it

I would cry.

We have sisal in our front room. Had a gas leak. The whole lot had to be ripped up and can't be relaid. We'd had it 2 months.

Rubyrose84 · 13/07/2024 16:42

Oh another one. Just bought some new adidas spezials however u spell it. Again loved them, wanted them a long time, gorgeous colour. Went to the shop , came home my puppy had taken one and ripped the whole shoe to shreds.. heart broken 💔

Saved up for ages to buy a MacBook Air. it arrived and I set it up. Went to make a cup of coffee, came back and my cat had taken a bite out of the corner, through the screen. The only use I got out of it was the ten minutes setting it up.

I am now using the cheapest, slowest laptop known to mankind.

Pic on the left is just before the incident! Pic on the right is the result of him not being allowed near the new one 😂

our BSH is the naughtiest cat I have ever known. I wouldn’t put this kind of vandalism past her!

AInightingale · 13/07/2024 16:48

Wish I'd never read that crap about putting paper down on carpet and running an iron over it to remove candle wax. I made such a bloody mess with a red candle that spilled its wax on a beige carpet that it would have looked better if I'd picked and brushed out the cold wax in tiny bits and shampooed it or something. The dye just bled into the carpet when it was heated.

20 years ago bought a large yoga ball for exercise and for sitting on at computer.

Day I bought it, my 3 year old got knife from drawer and plunged it Into the yoga ball....he wanted to know what would happen if he did that lol
