I don't understand. Can you give an example?.

Devilsmommy · 12/07/2024 11:20

What is vocal fry?

EasterlyDirections · 12/07/2024 11:21

What? I have never heard of vocal fry.

GoingRate · 12/07/2024 11:22

Think of the Kardashians.

Pennyandolive · 12/07/2024 11:22

I don’t understand

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 12/07/2024 11:23

Vocal fry is annoying once you spot it. It's unkind to point it out as now we all got irritated by it!

I'm not sure what your other points are about. Regional accents can be very melodic- I assume you aren't referencing that?

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 11:26

Oh god yes - so annoying

MonsteraMama · 12/07/2024 11:26

I speak really quickly, sorry Grin

Agree though that vocal fry and the questioning uplift on the end of every sentence (unless you're from aus, they get a pass) is infuriating.

Thecomfortador · 12/07/2024 11:28

Can't say this bothers me at all. Strange the things that people get worked up about.

Pennyandolive · 12/07/2024 11:29

Just googled vocal fry and actually it’s really interesting!

eggplant16 · 12/07/2024 11:31

Fry is absolutely vile. It makes my toes curl. Just bloody speak properly.

And no its not an affliction.

FindingMeno · 12/07/2024 11:36

Drives me mad.
I'm guessing it's deliberately cultivated?
If not, I'm guessing I'm a bit of an arsehole!

EasterlyDirections · 12/07/2024 11:39

I've never noticed this before but I tend to read interviews etc rather than watch them or use subtitles.

RobinsonsOrange · 12/07/2024 11:40

I hate it too, and it's becoming more and more common

Bearpawk · 12/07/2024 11:41

Zooey Deschenel (sp?) does it really badly

separatedornot · 12/07/2024 11:42

It's so annoying and is absolutely a choice

HousedInMySoul · 12/07/2024 11:48

I worked with a Welsh woman who did it. It did used to annoy me tbh. She was lovely, though, just sounded a bit daft (imo)

FattipuffToThinnifer · 12/07/2024 11:48

I was watching Greys Anatomy recently - the season where Kai comes and works at Grey Sloane - and couldn’t actually listen to Amelia Shepherd as her fry was terrible.

I don’t remember it being so bad in previous seasons - this was about S19 - and she used to be my favourite character. I don’t know if her voice has got worse or my tolerance for it has vanished but it was cringe-worthy. Not so much up and down but as though she never took a whole breath while she was talking

MedicalCannabis · 12/07/2024 11:50

It's idiotic!

DragonFly98 · 12/07/2024 11:55

This is a great example and very funny.

Allow me to link to this video by linguist Dr Geoff Lindsey about vocal fry - it does help in getting over the annoyance (a bit). The fun fact that all Finns speak with vocal fry was a real eye opener for me

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 12/07/2024 11:58

I started watching that video and managed about 30 seconds. Made my ears hurt. Horrible. YANBU OP!

catin8oots · 12/07/2024 11:58

I get vocal fry when I'm tired

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/07/2024 11:59

Why do people do it? Don't understand!
