Any examples going of this with a non-American accent? I thought the croaky thing was just that specific kind of American accent.

Oh gosh, that is annoying. It makes me think they need a good old cough.

I spend a lot of time on Teams with a lot of colleagues and vocal fry is very prevalent among the younger cohort. As is the sing-song up and down intonation and everybody sounds the same.

My hearing isn't brilliant due to damage in my 20s (so not just because I'm old) and I struggle to hear the detail of speech when it's so croaky. I hate it. Not very inclusive!

Sometimes people comment on how clear my speech is, especially online, and I think it's because I don't do any croaking or creaking which so many people do these days. They're just not used to hearing clear speech. In an earlier life I used a lot of telephones and radios and was taught how to speak clearly.

Thank you. Yes I know what you mean now - I don't think I'd have really noticed it before but definitely will going forward.

Deliciously Ella does it in an English accent...

It sounds like they can't actually quite be arsed to say what they're saying. Soooo affected! 😬🙄

A little update nobody asked for… I stumbled across this clip on YouTube from Casino Royale with Daniel Craig as James Bond and Eva Green as Vespa. It’s about 75% vocal fry. Basically every word Bond says uses vocal fry here and Vespa is alternating between whispering and vocal fry.
So there you go, vocal fry isn’t just American women you dislike because you think they are copying the Kardashians. Here it’s used to suggest Bond has just been woken up, that it’s a private (and quiet) conversation and it’s supposed to sound sexy. I think it does. Does everyone still hate vocal fry or is ok if it’s Daniel Craig?

I very much appreciate the update anyway @Demelzatheredhaired ! I was watching something on the telly the other night in Finnish and the whole country vocal fries. Sure, once you start hearing it it can be annoying, but imo only as annoying as the English intrusive R.
